The Army of Gondor

By ossderossmane, in Strategy and deck-building

I've always had difficulties in coming up with a decent Gondor deck. While there is plenty of cards for the trait, they are split accross all spheres and support different strategies. In addition, most of the heroes are high threat, double as important unique allies, or both. Nevertheless, with the last cycle, I believe we got some cards that help building around Gondor. The key additions are Heir of Mardil and Mablung.

This deck is a leadership/tactics deck that emphasises resource acceleration, ally mustering and global boosts. For regular quests, it uses Imrahil, Mablung and Theodred as the hero line-up. For battle questing, swap Imrahil for Leadermir, for siege or strong defensive requirements, Beregond instead of Mablung. This deck is certainly not top tier, but it has defeated all quests from the VoI deluxe, HoN, as well as Druadan Forest. Steward's Fear was not a success so far...

It should work for most quests not putting on too much early pressure, or extreme ally hate.

Heroes:

Imrahil/Boromir (Leadership)

Theodred

Mablung

Allies (23)

Squire of the Citadel (x3)

Pelargrir Ship Captain (x3)

Guardian of the Citadel (x3)

Herald of Anorien (x3)

Faramir (x2)

Defender of Ramas (x3)

Envoy of Pelargrir (x3)

Gandalf (x3)

Attachments (15)

Steward of Gondor (x3)

Heir of Mardil (x3)

Visionary Leadership (x3)

Shield of Gondor (x3)

Gondorian Fire (x3)

Events

A Very Good Tale (x3)

Sneak Attack (x3)

Valiant Sacrifice (x3)

Feint (x3)

Looking forward to your suggestions!

Nice deck!

As for suggestions, my personal favorite way to play Gondor is mono-leadership with Aragorn, Boromir and Balin (Sam is a great option as well). I use 3 copies of most Gondor allies, the usual Sneak attack+Gandalf, A very good tale, Strength of Arms which is an amazing card in this deck, Visionaly Leadership, Sword that was broken to get insane amounts of willpower, King under the mountain which is great card draw every turn (you're gonna see many unique duplicates, so you'll have no problem discarding them) plus 3 copies of Galadriel, which in this deck works just great. There's nothing better than T1 Steward, then Galadriel into Sword that was broken, and quest for 7 in the first round. Also, Balin's ability can be a lifesaver in some quests.

Another variant was very similar but with tactics Boromir, x3 Gondorian Fire, x3 Song of Kings. Once you got that combo going, Boromir pretty much takes care of everything in combat, while the weenies quest.

Fun deck idea! I have a few suggestions.

- You probably don't need 3 copies of Heir of Mardil. The deck has some card draw, but 3x copies of all your attachments could leave you with some dead cards.

- For Gondor! would be a decent and thematic event to include

- The balance between leadership and tactics is off a bit. You only have 9 tactics cards vs 32 leadership cards. The neutral cards might help smooth the resources, but I would try to include a few more tactics cards considering Mablung has built-in resource generation. Maybe add Gondorian Spearmen, Spears of the Citadel, Horn of Gondor, Captain of Gondor, Behind Strong Walls, and/or Knights of Minas Tirith.

- Citadel Custodian might be worthwhile considering how many Gondor Allies you have. They would be even easier to play for cheap if you include Errand Riders.

- For more thematic brownie points you could take out sneak attack + Gandalf. I know it's really powerful and all, but you should try to leave it out if possible. That could be 6 more Gondor allies in the deck!

- Gondorian Discipline could come in handy since you don't have any healing.

- White Tower Watchman wouldn't be terrible even though his ability goes to waste.

Hi everyone, thank you for your inupt!

@ Gizlivadi: That Mono-Leadership deck sounds great! Strength of Arms is such a great card, really want to try it with Boromir. Also, Faramir+StwB+Visionary, that's some massive questing power.

@Teamjimbi: The original version had a few more cards (Including Horn of Gondor and for Gondor), and fewer in triplicate. I found in testig that the greater consistency is more important for me, especially since the deck doesn't draw that well unless you use Gandalf for drawing (which is what I usually do). Custodian, For Gondor, and Behind Strong walls were all considerations, but didn't make the cut when narrowing down to 50. Sneaky Gandalf, unfortunately, is hard to replace in single player, but I'd argue that he is not too unthematic in a Gondor deck, as he travelled there before the events of the Lord of the Ring.

I just played the deck against encounter at Amon DIn and Assault on Osgiliath. The former was not too much of a challenge (as usual), the latter destroyed me a couple of times in early game, but once I stabilized it wasn't too bad. That encounter deck is very draw dependent and has some nasty cards.

Good looking deck!

I always had issues to make good Gondor deck and this one looks really good, only thing i'm missing is Mablung but i think that it can be replaced with other hero (maybe) and if it's not gonna work then i have to wait some time to get him. I gonna try to test this deck probably next week and i gonna post here how it went, what quests i completed etc...

It's also nice to have a little bit of variation since i use way to much spirit decks when i'm playing. (seriously!)

Let me know how it goes!

For combat heavy quests, I'd use Beregond or Boromir. If you need the willpower, maybe Merry? Not too great thematically, but the lower threat could help.

I want to make a mono-Gondor deck, but unfortunately I don't have The Steward's Fear adventure pack, as it is sold out everywhere even online. Is it possible to make a mono-Gondor deck without it? I also don't want to use Gandalf/Sneak Attack x3 because every deck has them.

The only relevant card from Steward's Fear is the Gondorian shield. It's a great card, but not central to the way the deck works. Likewise, no sneaky Gandalf will reduce the deck's power level, but doesn't affect the core ideas.

I finally had time to test your deck and honestly it wasn't that good than i first tought. Maybe it's because i used Beregond instead of Mablung and i didn't have three copies of sneak attack, valiant sacrifice or steward of Gondor, but deck had too much unique and useless cards in it. I mean that three Gondorian fires, Heir of Mardils and visionary leaderships. They are all good cards, especially visionary, but if you have that much unique cards in your deck, your hand will be stuffed by useless cards. Also feints were kind of useless since i used Beregond and didn't have a need to use them.

But it was still fun to play with it, because it was much different deck compared to my "classic" spirit trio deck. Also playing with other peoples decks is always exciting.

So Your deck is ok, but some more editing and testing, then it will be better ;)

Thanks for trying out the deck! What quests did you play it against?

In general, I think you are right with respect to this not being a super powerful deck. The multiple uniques are there because this deck in my experience has the most trouble in early game, and the extra copies help with getting to a good board more quickly. It can of course hurt your late game.

I played Blood of Gondor and Morgul Vale with the deck now. BoG took a few attempts, but was ultimately a success. In my opinion, this is unfortunately a very underrated quest, that can be quite tough. Morgul Vale was pretty hopeless, I think this is still one that needs a tailored deck. With the cycle more or less completed and the Lost Realm released, I will move on to other decks for a while. I'm hoping to revisit this when Gondor gets some new cards.

I don't remember the another one but second quest which i played was Encounter at Amon Din and i won that one at the second try.

About the Blood of Gondor quest, i think that it's really good all around quest, which has lots of excitment and just a right amount of dificulty.

Really nice deck sir.

I always try to make thematic decks and i found that is hard to make a decent gondor deck to beat almost all quests just like the dwarfs outlands etc..

After lots of tries I came up with this deck that I think that is really strong and thematic, i manage to defeat almost all scenarios that I own.

Boromir (leadership)

Prince

Pippin (lore)

Pippin does not have gondor trait but he was a gondor soldier during the war and has some conection with gondor too.

The deck has lots of allies and its has the same strategy of the dwarves with boromir inspiring all allies. :)

Another suggestion for two handed, I have had a lot of success with leadership Boromir on one side, as in the deck discussed here, and Faramir on the other side with a trap/ranger deck, as most of the Rangers have a Gondor trait. You have to cut the ally Faramir, and hero Faramir is not that great, but with Haldir and Mirlonde the trap deck can go mono green and your primary deck can throw in some red weapons. The first deck defends while the green deck uses range and Haldir to attack (along with traps). You quickly find that the Boromir buff is huge on the ranger allies. Pretty fun team.
