What kind of fleets are you guys using @ 180 points?

By TrentL, in Star Wars: Armada

I guess I should really say "What kind of upgrades are you using @ 180 points"

Just wondering I look at the ones that FF made and I'm wondering if Tarken and Dodonna are worth it at such low point levels

Edited by TrentL

I have only 1 core and am (thus far anyhow) resisting to buy me a second core.

So my 'list building' is rather limited.

(ever so light feel for understatement perhaps)

Eagerly waiting for wave 1 though. (pre-ordered one of each)

Re; the edited question.

Obviously I still am in the experimental stages of exploring this game.

But for now I lean towards:

Imperial: The Victory II: Motti, leading shots & enhanced armament. 6x Tie fighters including Howlrunner -> 179 pts

Rebel: CR90a & Nebulon B escort frigate plus 4 X-wings including Luke leaving me 20 pts upgrades to swap around and experiment with.

Just wondering I look at the ones that FF made and I'm wondering if Tarken and Dodonna are worth it at such low point levels

Vic II with Tarkin, Ship Title, and the Imperial officer guy( cant think of his name off the top of my head) I also have two ties and Howlrunner

Turn one end up with two tokens one from Tarkin one from dial, turn two put a third token, turn three I do a concentrate fire comand that plus title lets you throw 9 dice at close- medium range. With a re roll. I've one shotted a very unfortunate Nebulon-B that presented my forward arc with a port hull Zone

You have to have a Flagship, this you have to have a Commander, thus you have to have Tarkin/Dondonna.

What I am not sure about: Does Tarkin's ability include his own ship? (Otherwise he would just make sense, if there is at least one other ship on the battlefield)

Yes. Ships are friendly to themselves as per the rulebook.

I am running this:

CR90a with Enhanced Armaments

CR90b with Dodonna and Dodonna's pride

Luke and 3 Xwings.

My opponents hate how maneuverable I am and the CR90b with Dodonna and Dodonna's Pride is great at sniping other ships since all of its attacks are blue and that is what triggers Dodonna's Pride.

Edited by Overdawg

CR90 B with overload pulse is something I'm trying to take advantage of, but so far it seems risky to get that close if I haven't got the right angle on the Victory.

Victory I-Class Star Destroyer

  1. Grand Moff Tarkin
  2. Weapons Liaison
  3. Enhanced Armament
  4. Assault Concussion Missiles

Howlrunner

4x TIE Fighter Squadron

Total 179

At 180 pts, you are playing on a 3x3 field. Less room to run around. The Victory, piloted correctly, can corner at least one of the opposing ships. As Inksplat pointed out to me in another thread, Weapons Liaison seems almost a no-brainer with armament upgrades like ACM or Overload Pulse. Enhanced Armament to make the flanks deadlier and howlrunner and friends to provide fighter cover/clean-up duty. Black dice are really good.

You have to have a Flagship, this you have to have a Commander, thus you have to have Tarkin/Dondonna.

So you don't Have to have a commander to play, you have an option.

See I'm not sold on ACM's at all ... if you get to use them it's pretty awesome but ALL the games I've played none of the Rebels were ever close enough to use black dice so it seems like a wasted upgrade... however the Overload Pulse seems WELL worth it.

What about the Rebels what are you guys using? (Since about 95% of the people in my area play Imperials ... its up to me to sometimes field Rebels)

How surviable is Luke in his Xwing? Seems like a lot of points but his ability is awesome if you can deliver it.

Page 6 of the RRG under Flagship. "Any ship can be a flagship regardless of the upgrade icons in its upgrade bar." But if a ship is equipped with a Commander the it has to be the Flagship. Page 3.

So you don't Have to have a commander to play, you have an option.

You have to have a commander for a "tournament legal" force.

  • A fleet must have one flagship and cannot have more than one.

The wording here is what I am going by and if it does state a Flagship Must have a Commander then I stand corrected. I just don't see it.

Hold on, let's be decent here. Where in the rule book does it say a Flagship Must have a commander? Now a ship with a Commander Has to be the Flagship, yes, but I am not finding anywhere where it say a Flagship Must have a Commander.

A Flagship is a ship equipped with a commander card. You cannot have a flagship without a commander.

I don't have the rules in front of me but it clearly says this under the Flagship section of the Rules Reference book.

I am unclear on this. This is how I read it before, but the tournament rules pdf. now suggests you need a commander... I hope not - Motti and Tarkers are both a bit pants with one boat only!

FFG please get on that, this Will get eaten up by RAW gamers. RAI does not cut it.

Also Get Out Wave One Soon, we need more than one commander for each side. Seriously!

So nobody out there is playing rebels?

And while Motti is cool no doubt I think Tarkin is the one I would choose between them .. as he can really flex his tactical ability each round especially on larger ships (I mean if the VSD had 3 tokens ... the ISD will have 4 I'm sure)

I play rebels in one-player test games... so that I have something to shoot at... ; - )

Joking aside, although I am a Vader fanboy at heart, I have been impressed with the Rebels and will look forward to putting a fleet together for them.

I'm looking right at that page.... Ok now I see at the top before it gets into the rule points it does say "A flagship is a ship equipped with a Commander card." So that is right. Horribly worded, it really really should have "A flagship has to have a Commander attached to it" in the bullet points.

I think you are reading the rules wrong. The parts before the actual bullet points are the rules. The bullet points are then clarifications and extrapolations on how that rule is applied and can interact with other rules. Of course the document isn't perfect and there will need to be an FAQ, but the information before the bullet points is arguably more important than the bullet points.

By reading the Learn to Play and Rules Reference, you do not have to have a commander in your fleet. However, page 3 of the Tournament rules, under Fleet Building:

A fleet must include a single commander and one objective card from each category.

So nobody out there is playing rebels?

And while Motti is cool no doubt I think Tarkin is the one I would choose between them .. as he can really flex his tactical ability each round especially on larger ships (I mean if the VSD had 3 tokens ... the ISD will have 4 I'm sure)

I've played each once, though my game with the Rebels was not completed. I haven't gotten to play with the same friend twice and I always let them pick which faction they want.

My go to faction will probably be the Rebels, but until then I'll play whatever I can get.

Above the bullet points. The very first sentence in the Rules Reference book under the Flagship heading:

"A flagship is a ship equipped with a commander card."

Yeah, it looks like you have to have a commander no matter what. That's how I'm going to play it.
