Engineering Points - use 'em or lose 'em?

By Gibarian, in Star Wars: Armada

I've been through the rules 3 or 4 times now and I'm still a little foggy when it comes to understanding Engineering points.

My current, conservative interpretation is that any time you do something that grants EPs, you are compelled to spend them then and there or they disappear.

However, I can't find anything in the rules that spells that out explicitly. I was initially confused about whether or not you can carry around a stash of EPs to spend later. The main thing that makes me doubt that is the lack of any sort of token for tracking accrued EPs... if you were able to bank them, I'm guessing the game would provide a counter of some sort.

From the rules reference:

"After a ship resolves a [repair] command, it loses any remaining engineering points. Engineering points do not persist from round to round."

First full bullet point on page 4. I had to hunt for it, too. It's hidden under "Commands"

Im pretty sure its in the learn to play guide, unspend Engineering points are lost, so they do not carry over.

Engineering points also need to be spent all at the same time - e.g. you can activate, gain the points and then spend them to do multiple things, like divert a shield and repair a damage card, but you couldnt say do the shield before attacking, then attack and move and then go "Oh, and now I want to use those remaining engineering points to discard my damage card" - It has to be at the activation phase.

One thing that is clarified on engineering points is that spending a token and dial at the same time allows you to add these together as they effectively get treated as the same action. - RR pg 4 second to last bullet under command.

So an early engineering token on a corvette will allow a damage card to be discarded at a later date when taking an engineering dial.

With redemption for the rebels this gives only one additional point though as the same bullet point clarifies it is treated as a single resolution of the command.

That does give a corvette the chance to gain 4 engineering points or two shield regen quite easily, which I think could really be big for themin the survival stakes.

If you use Repair and gain 4 Engineering points, would you be able to spend them to repair sheilds twice, gaining two shields back? Or can you only gain a single shield back each time you use the Repair Command?

"A ship can pay for and resolve each effect multiple times if he has the engineering points to do so."

Thanks - I was in the middle of a game and that's what I remembered, but I couldn't put my hands on the line in the book. The rules seemed very clear when I was reading them, but when you're searching for something in the middle of a game, the rule you're seeking is always pretty elusive.

This has been enlightening, thank you. I'm happy I can recover multiple shield per turn if I like. The Redemption is going to be really important for keeping allied ships alive I imagine. To think a hospital ship inspires improved repairing capability.

Actually, I have a question! Can you 'repair' or redirect your shields to more than the starting numbers? For example, I want to use a Repair command on a Neb-B who gives me three engineering points. I then want to put two more shields on the left side of the ship to give it a total shield value of three, 'repairing' a point with the command and moving a point away from the right side of the ship. Is any of this possible?

Yup, just remember that the multiple actions have to be at the same time though,

so you couldnt go "repair shields", then shoot and move and then "repair shields some more", you would need to do it twice in the first instance before moving on to the rest of your turn. :)

No, a shield facing cannot exceed its stated value.
