Rules Reference page 12. The number is the number of blue dice you can roll against anyone who attacks you.

Um, x-wings don't have counter attack...

Yup, Only A-Wings and TIE Interceptors have counter

X-Wings have Bomber and Escort

Ah ok, let me clarify

X Counter means when someone attacks your squadron, you can roll X number of dice attacking back at them. Its an immediate retaliation roll that makes A-Wings and Interceptors very nasty (you shoot me and I shoot you straight back for free, and then I can shoot you again on my turn)

Escort means that if you have an allied squadron - say some Y wings, within range 1 of your X-Wings, any squadrons that want to shoot at your Y-wings, MUST shoot the X-Wings instead.

The reason why it mentioned Counter, is because if the Y-wings then shot some TIE Interceptors, the counter shot from the Interceptors would still hit the Y-Wings, but any seperate attack on the Interceptors turn must shoot the X-Wings.

Thats why it says "any non-counter attack".

Pretty sure I remember reading that because it is representing a "simultanious" attack then yes, even if the unit is destroyed counter still applies for that attack.
