New Phantom rules - decloak off asteroid?

By Hedgehogmech, in X-Wing Rules Questions

We played a game using the revised Phantom rules today, and came up against an interesting situation. If a cloaked Phantom is on an asteroid, can is perform a decloak?

The decloak rules say:

"A ship cannot decloak if it would overlap another ship or an obstacle token, or if the maneuver template would overlap an obstacle token."

We figured this refers to the end position - but is this definitely the case? It's never come up before because normal boosts or barrel rolls are actions, which can't be performed when on an asteroid - but the Phantom's decloak isn't an action...

So can a Phantom decloak off an asteroid?

Well, you can't decloak if the maneuver template overlaps the obstacle, but other than that it works fine.

It works just like boost and BR do, just without actually being either of those actions.

ok, I've got that one. Now, can someone explain to this Noob just how the Phantom De-cloak was nerfed in the update?

The current rule is that you may decloak before you reveal your maneuver dial.

The new rule states that if you wish to decloak you do it at the start of the activation phase, in order of pilot skill and with ties broken by initiative

ok, that still may not be such a bad thing... if whisper has a PS9 or more.

To reiterate.

It used to be that a phantom decloak end immediately before it executed its maneuver

Now it decloaks before any ships move that round. Then ships with PS lower than the phantom move, then the phantom moves, then ships with hight PS move.

There are several things that will allow you to boost or barrel-roll off of an asteroid. Asteroids only cause you to lose your Perform Action Step, they don't prevent you from taking actions that come from other sources.

A few examples:

- A B-Wing with Advanced Sensors starts it's turn on an Asteroid. It can barrel-roll off.

- Jake Farrel gets a focus token from Kyle Katarn and uses either boost or barrel-roll off of the asteroid.

- A Delta Defender gets an action passed to him from Jonus with the Squad Leader EPT and is able to barrel-roll off.

A few examples:

All of which assume that the template being used to boost/roll does not itself overlap the obstacle.

And I just reread the OP and wanted to make sure it was clear,

because normal boosts or barrel rolls are actions, which can't be performed when on an asteroid -

You CAN perform actions when on an asteroid, but you skip your "perform action step" which means that the ability to perform an action has to come from somewhere else.

It works just like boost and BR do, just without actually being either of those actions.

And like old decloaking did. The new rules only change what point in the phase it happens at.

Thanks for the answers, that really helps. :)

Thanks for clarifying. I wonder how I ended up quoting myself instead of quoting the piece of the OP that I was responding to.

You just love hearing your own voice so darn mich!

it cuts back on the using the decloak as a position modification. Actions such as boost and barrel roll are very effective with high pilot skill because all the lower pilot skill ships have moved so you can use these actions to reposition yourself to get ships within firing arc or keep out of the firing arcs of other ships since lower pilot skill ships have already moved and cannot change where they are. Since only a handfull of pilots have skill 8 or higher it was very tricky to chase VI Whisper or even run away from it as it would simply decloak so the maneuver revealed would be out of firing arcs of enemy ship yet have a enemy ship of a lower pilot skill within it arc.

With the decloak in the beginning of the activation phase now ships can make boost and barrel-roll actions based on possible maneuvers from the phantom in its new position not from where it can decloak and it possible maneuvers.

If you are on an asteroid from the previous round, moving off of it does not effect you negatively the following round that you move off of it, provided that you indeed move off of it and to not move back on to it (or another asteroid).

If you are on an asteroid from the previous round, moving off of it does not effect you negatively the following round that you move off of it...

But that also depends on if your template overlaps it. It's possible to land on a edge of one or in some other position, that when you move off it, your template overlaps it again.

Hopefully this clears up some questions about what is legal:

Excellent, but I would add the reasons why to the 2 asteroid examples at the top.

Ok, fixed it.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you!

Holy necrotic thread there, Batman!

Yep, that one got dredged from the bottom of the barrel of things that we thought were sorted long ago. :)

But it was necroed to acknowledge that I did something useful. That's possibly the best reason to necro a thread. You can't fault a guy for that.
