A Pattymelt fleet

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing

I just had a delicious cheeseburger on sourdough toast, called a patty-melt 'round these parts.

Oddly, that inspired a fleet.

After the Raider drops, we have this beastie:

4xTempest Squadron Pilots

+ TIE X/1 Title

+ Accuracy Corrector

+ Cluster Missiles

.-=25 Each=-.

Check it:

With a (free) Accuracy Correcter, the TIE Advanceds of this list only ever need to do one offensive action all game: the Target Lock on their Cluster victims.

Even at Range 1, a Target-Lock could only add +1 damage, and does so fairly rarely. Might as well go with a Focus you'd be okay using defensively.

Even so, you can take the 5 hp with 3 agility, and use your actions to improve survivability for the rest of the game, confident that you'll always be able to confront your opponent's green dice with 2 hit results per attack.

The true terror, though, is in that Cluster-Missile barrage. In that round, your victim is going to be faced with having to dodge an expectation of 17 damage (3 die attacks have a 1/8 chance of coming out with 3 natural damage, and you're throwing out 8 3-die attacks. Everything else is going to deal a minimum of 14 damage).

Like I said in the title: Melt 'em.

That's enough to annihilate Fat Han.

That's a guaranteed kill on a Decimator, excepting only Kenkirks or Decis with Hull/Shield upgrades.

In other words, if 21 points is a good buy for a Tempest with AC, then this is 16 points worth of missile that are going to destroy 50-60 points of opponent. Which is tasty.

This fleet should fair well against Swarms too, although there will be several dozen exchanges of fire in which neither side is dealt damage.

Double Aggressors and anything dealing with Superfighters is going to be problematic for it, though. You'll actually have to predict flightpaths and arc-dodge in those fights. Alas.

lol a friend and I proxied up this list a week after TIE/x1 was spoiled and we insta-killed Decimators.

It would be 4-straight into range two aaaaaaand no more Decimator.

So long, space cowpig.

So the next question becomes: What lists stand tall against this onslaught?

Arc dodgers would work as intended, and B-wing spam would just roll too many dice for them to handle...in theory.

I've been excited to fly Jo Jo's "Falcon Hunting Party" list ever since he came up with it, and it's the sole reason I bought a 3rd Advanced in anticipation of the Raider release. 4x Tempest with Accuracy Corrector and Clusters will suffer from the Soontirs and Jakes of the game, but **** will they wreck any build that relies on a large-based ship.

B-Wings only have 1 agility, so they're pretty vulnerable to the Clusters.

Also, the "B-Wing Spam" assumes that all pilots in the scenario are PS 2, and probably both lists are 100 pointers, meaning that Initiative matters a ton, and I have a 50% shot at having it.

You also have to consider on the Cluster Missile volleys you're still rolling 3 dice, which has the potential of rolling 3 hits/attack that might not need accuracy corrector.

I did.

A 3-die attack has a 1/8 chance of coming up 3 damage with no modifiers.

So, that's why I said an expected damage of 17, instead of the minimum of 16.

Yes, the maximum is 24, but that's fairly unlikely :)

Looks like Kagi will have some fun...

You could mix in 1-2 FCS/Concussion Missile x1s. That would let you spike damage against targets that are naturally resistant to 2 damage, and do it early. Turn 1 you shoot and get the free TL. Turn 2 you fire your Concussions with a Focus, with a very high likelihood of 4 damage. They're not as good in subsequent rounds, but that large damage turn can get you early kills against some nasty stuff.

This is the second list I thought of after Vader/ATC/Pred w/ 3× Tempest/AC.

Now I'm playing around with 3x Tempest/AC and Steele/ATC/Calc

Soontir Fell or Whisper (even post errata) would probably solo the lot of them :(

AC is going to be amazing for a guy who distrusts dice as much as I do, but it's a max of 2 damage and does not influence your opponent's green dice + defensive actions. Imo, the generic AC tempest is going to be an amazing anti-low agility and anti-fattie ship that will struggle against higher agility assholes, necessitating the intervention of lord Vader or the hitherto unspoiled new pilots maybe.

I'd bet that Fel would die from them pretty quickly. His 3-4 agility dice would have to be rocking pretty hard to doge all thoose cluster missiles the first turn... And if you spread your arcs right, he'll have a hard time staying safe afterwards. Each advanced is still really tanky.

Yeah, Fel is awesome, but AT won't help him here and since they don't have to fly in a block, they can can have a fairly good slice of the board covered with lots of overlap for concentrated fire. As always, it's gonna come down to how you fly and how you can read the other guy. At let it will once the "fix" is in.

So the next question becomes: What lists stand tall against this onslaught?

Four times:

Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Push the Limit (3)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Calculation (1)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Ahh--- X4 spam, probably ok, but you'd probably want to bring along another 25 point ship in place, maybe 2, like a doom shuttle, or a pair of regular ties, or ... you know - something.

"What lists stand tall against this onslaught?"

Your 4 tempests have pilot skill 2, so anything that can wax them before they fire will be helpful - I already see above the P.S. bid to 3 to fire first, oh my - could p.s. 3-5 become important again to go before the tempests? - Arc Dodging and High Agility help withstand the onslaught.

Kaptain Kagi can help mess with it, especially if flown on a vector in range, but not the main threat.

Decimator needs to see the tempest attack coming and arc dodge (engine / stay on target) or ram to prevent shots on it - which is a little easier to do given the range 2-1 of the cluster missiles. Countermeasures also become pretty awesome - I get an agility die vs all those attacks - 8 agility dice ought to cancel a hit or two from the incoming 16-17 hits. And the ability to scrap a target lock to counter one of the missile attacks for at least a round.

Wow - It's almost like this tie advanced build supplies further balance to the overall meta!

Cool list. I'm really looking forward to trying out the new TIE Advanced in a game once raider drops. I don't think I'll be running 4 tempests, just because I wouldn't find it exciting, but I bet you'll be able to make some really cool new mixed imperial lists with advanced and autoceptors and the like now.
