Things that broke the game!

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Practically *anything* with C-3PO is still broken. On paper he's fine but in practice when 99.9% of the time he gives an automatic evade, something is terribly amiss. But worse that that IMHO, the card as it stands now is counter to the flavor of Threepio as a character. That alone merits him further consideration.

I'm sorry, but I must disagree. C-3PO is a pessimist. Therefore guessing that you're not going to roll any evade dice is 100% in line with the flavor of the character.

Furthermore, it works only once a turn IF you roll at least 1 die. Outmaneuver, intimidation, crits that make you lose agility, Wedge Antilles all ignore this ability. But say you don't want to bring any of those cards. You know how else you get around him? Shoot more than once. Further furthermore, when guessing zero, C-3PO only works 62.5% of the time.

Ah, forget it, it's all been said before.

haha, I like this assessment of C-3PO's character

I was just thinking about how I would feel if I were given green dice to defend myself with and then crossed referenced it with my typical regard for green dice, and...well...

the only thing that's out of character is that Han gets to use him

oh man, you guys should check out GWs forum! So much belly aching there!

Sorry, I still don't see that there is any part of the game that was ever 'broken'.

Whisper with VI, ACD, FCS and a funky crew member was potentially evil, yes. It was also fragile as hell, and I've seen plenty of Phantoms die because of a good round of shooting or being landed on an asteroid. Two shields and two hull points go nowhere fast if you shoot them enough. Heck, Soontir with RG, Autothrusters, targeting computer and PTL can be evil (I ran this with a tooled up Deci the other night and the Deci died having achieved pretty much nothing leaving Fel to win the match single handed without so much as a scratch) but he can also suffer very easily (in my next two games using him he got killed early, the second time in the first round of shooting where he got one shotted by a HWK using autoblaster turret).

Bottom line, there isn't an 'unbeatable' list out there - sure there are ships that are powerful when used well and with luck, but mostly you will find that they cost more points wise. The balance isn't perfect, and occasionally tweaks are made to fix things, but no, there is nothing in the game that is 'broken'. IMHO.

Yes but someone who disagree's with you will always class your complaint as moaning wont they?

I advocated for a modification to help tie interceptors against turret ships and was told to stop moaning turrets are fine, now obviously i did have a valid stance and FFG agreed with me and others but still it was called moaning.

Sadly this is true. There are plenty of people in this forum that want to accuse anyone who uses the forum to express their displeasure with some aspect of the game of bitching and moaning. Of course they never apply those labels to themselves when they dislike something. Or to people they agree with. Just people with different opinions.

I HATE THIS GAME!!!

I'm a gonna sell it all for cheap on dat Bay-thingie!

:D

Every time I see the doom and gloom threads I cannot help but think how horribly broken Warhammer Fantasy and 40k has been at times (and still is). X-wing, at it's very worst level of 'broken', shines as a veritable star of fairness and balance in comparison to that.

So that Fat Han is getting you down? Don't you worry, Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Knights could literally not be hurt by basic level troops in some editions. Whisper feeling a bit overpowered? Try engaging a double frenzied Khorne general equipped with Helm of Many Eyes and Hydra Blade. I don't remember how many attacks that 'effer got but he easily dispatched a regiment per turn while striking before anyone else.

You know what I think about every time I see a doom and gloom thread? I can't help but think about the time I nailed myself in the crotch playing racquetball. You think playing Fat Han is painful, it's really nothing compared to that.

In case the sarcasm was too subtle: The existence of other games that suck worse than X-wing does not make X-wing's problems meaningless. It may possibly mean that some people are downright masochistic in their game selection, but it really has no bearing on the objective quality of any other game out there.

No, but it does mean that phrases like "The Death of X-Wing" and "There is no point playing this game" are a tad melodramatic.

GW hasn't got forums anymore they closed em down because they can't deal with honest criticism or trolling.

Whineseer and bolter are not official forum's.

See I'm of the opinion that X-Wing isn't broken. It works the way its designers want it to work. For me, what is broken is peoples' perceptions on how THEY think the game should work.

Don't like a new ability? The game's broken.

Don't like a new ship's dial? The game's broken.

Don't like the new... ...whatever? The game must be broken.

The reality is, that as the game grows, so the interactions between the existing game components and the newer ones that are coming in. And no matter how much playtesting you do, there will almost always be things that slip through the net.

Was the Phantom's Cloaking/De-cloaking ability broken? For me, no. Because there were counters that didn't really care about Whisper's shenanigans.

Was it over-powered? Possibly, but again, there were counters.

I don't know WHY FFG changed the cloaking rules, but then again, neither do (I suspect) the vast majority of people who play the game, and frequent these boards. Some people might be of the opinion that it's because it was broken, other people think it's because there are going to be some new ships with the cloaking ability. And until the designers decide to tell us why, it's all speculation.

Cheers
