Anyone like the btl Y wing?

By bmwrider, in X-Wing

I always loved the Y wing and when I saw the new cards I was excited, but so far everyone that used them has failed.

Is the btl only good for adding a 2 attack before the ion turret attack?

Or am I missing something?

Will it always Be labled as an ion or nothing ship?

Played a couple tonight and could not get them to work. Even with unhinged astro and engine upgrade I couldn't get them pointed at the targets effectively, and when I did have a decent shot it was without any way to modify the attacks.

Well there still isn't an efficient damage dealing turret, so ion is still the way to go. Blaster turret can work okay with the R4 agromech but the ITC still works better.

2 Hired Guns with Ion, Agro, and the title are giving me all kinds of control.
It isn't about killing the enemy, it is about control, flying stuff off the board or out of the fight, on to rocks...
Be patient.
They are the anvil.
Bring along a hammer.

I've played a bit with ICT + R4. It was really fun and pretty effective, but of course you can't clear stress.

I've used them with ABT / Unhinged / Proton or Seismic, and then paired up with Emon. My opponent never knew which way to defend against them - the double gun shot or the bomb. It was great fun.

imo ion or no title

the arc restriction is huge when slapped on top a focus restriction or a range one restriction. ion is the most reasonable turret and turns the Y-wings into masters of the joust (in that they'll be jousting, and the opponent will be floundering uselessly through space)

I never find the range 1 for the ABT to be a problem. The inevitable furball that the middle of the map is just perfect for a combination of a double-tap forward and then some good bomb drops. I agree that the ICT is very useful and equally hilarious for helping my opponent to drive right into a proton bomb, but I've found that the ABT isn't much of a liability with it's range.

WHAAAT.

I mean, its not like the A4 Y isn't now the most typically potent damage dealer in the game at that value...

anyway, but not a perfect ship of course. I hate the greens on the Y. I prefer having 2 ion turrets in my list as area catchers, so a BTL Y has to come in as a 3rd Y or HWK.

R4 really ups the damage in a BTL.

R4 really ups the chance of ionizing on a non-BTL.

Drea Renthal + 3pt scum astro is painful painful.

Unhinged is a great use of 1 pt.

Grey (PS4) + EPTdroid + Predator is nutty damage

R3A2 is silly and seriously controlling.

They go great in almost any list that doesn't require flycatchers (turreted Ys or HWKs).

The forward R2 restriction is truly a thing. Try and fly fast and forward.

I've enjoyed the combo of BTL-A4 and BTL-S3 (non-title; turretted) as a pair with Ions.

On the joust they both have a strong chance to Ion but thanks to the S3 being Turreted it can F/TL on the pass with the increased Ion chance and mitigating the Stressed shot for the K-Turning A4.

Technically speaking every Y-wing configuration is a BTL Y-wing because "BTL Y-wing" is the name of the ship. The title turns the Y-wing from a BTL-S3 (a two man Y-wing with a turret gunner) to a BTL-A4 (one man Y-wing with the turret locked forward and fire linked).

The great thing about the title is that it's not autoinclude: both the A4 and S3 are excellent choices and you take the one that fits what you want to do best. The S3 is much more effective at control and area denial whereas the A4 has greater firepower S3 mitigates the weak dial and A4 can be arcdodged.

The title gives the Y the punch it needed, the ion turret keeps other from shooting at you while you k-turn behind them, the unhinged astromech makes it a fighter who doesn't have to worry stress, and it's survives long enough to drop a bomb at them, when you don't have arc. The Y now offers a great and versatile package, and has become much more fun to play.

4 scum Ys with Agromech "BTL" title and blaster turret. that way you can use the focus to trigger TL. fly ships in a Loose Deuce formation. with the first two spaced two by two with the first wave about range two from the second two. that way if someone tries to K turn they will have the rear two Ys to deal with or block them. easyer said then done. but basically just keep them facing the enemy and keep firing..lol its all over if somebody gets behind them. however equip the last to with a couple of seismic charges. helps a little bit.. I personally like the build but i like Ys.. i haven't tried it but the BTLYs might also be good for split formations. as they have enough firepower that it may be feasible.I personally would rather sling red dice then ions but thats just me... although that ion option is good as well..

I took two to a store championship having never run them against another person and came in 3rd. If the phantom change had happened I think I would have won it. All losses to whisper.

List:

Gold Squadron: BTL-A4, Ion turret, Bomb Loadout, Prox Mines

Gold Squadron: BTL-A4, Ion Turret, R3-A2

Corran Horn: Advanced Sensors, Push the Limit, r2-D2, Engine

They do so much damage and their odds of landing an ion are much higher. They're incredibly effective. I haven't found the scum version to be as useful, but that's probably just because I can't figure out what to run with them. A pair of them can almost always guarantee an ion on a big(non-IG) ship and once that happens it's over. They just walk it off the board while doing decent damage to it the whole time. And that double stressbot is just insanely good. I put 9 stress on my Y but his IG target had 6 stress and 2 ions when he conceded.

The Y's are so beast that even 2-ship lists usually went for the Y's first despite the fact that that Corran could kill any of their ships alone easily. Having 3-7 stress tokens on your IG is a bad place to find yourself.

Yes, people like the BTL-A4 title. It's my favorite thing about Wave 6, in fact.

Agreed. Maybe the most impactful change outside of a new faction.

They've done quite well in recent tournaments: four scum Y-wings with BTL-A4 and Ion turret have won four different store championships in the past few weeks. Having two attacks a turn is very powerful, and if you start to land Ion shots, the Y-wing's lack of maneuverability doesn't hurt it so much.

I murdered Wedge and Ibtisam with them last weekend.

Played a couple tonight and could not get them to work. Even with unhinged astro and engine upgrade I couldn't get them pointed at the targets effectively, and when I did have a decent shot it was without any way to modify the attacks.

This is the problem I had.

To solve this problem, I prefer this combo:

Drea Renthal (22)
Autoblaster Turret (2)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Unhinged Astromech (1)
Munitions Failsafe (1)
BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

Total: 34

Long range AND short range power!

No difference compared to flying a X-wing or Z-95.. do you have problems flying those?

The y-wing has decent toughness but crappy offense, crappy defense, and crappy maneuverability and not enough upgrade slots to significantly improve them.

I've had a lot of fun running 4 syndicate thugs with ion turrets, R4 and A4. I start them in a pinwheel formation and just fly as fast as I can towards the enemy. Clearing stress is a pain, but your opponent should have a few ionized ships when you k-turn, so it won't be a huge problem.

The new title is fantastic. Remember how awesome Corran's double-tap was? Well, here's a way to get it with both shots at the same PS and without losing a shot next round. (No, it's not quite as good as far as damage potential goes, but it makes up for that with its low price and control effects). Instead of dealing 1-2 damage per round, Y-Wings (generally) deal 2-3 and an ion. That's pretty solid.

Although I have to mention, all Y-Wings are BTLs. The full name of the ship is "BTL Y-Wing starfighter." The A4 was a specific variant with the turret fixed forward. So classifying Y-Wings with the title as BTLs can get a little confusing . . . especially if you also play Shadowrun.
