Uglies

By Nightshrike, in X-Wing

Ouch .. chopped up 2 beautiful models. My heart hurts every time I see these kind of conversions. I'll say a little prayer tonight.

I love painting minis but I can't bring myself to touch the SW ones in case I butcher them. I applaud your commitment.

The Tie with Y-Wing engines ...awesome. As stated before, I can't get behind the Y-Wing with solar panels. But hey Not a single SW ship would be able to steer in space anyway (only engines at the back to push it forward) so I guess physics went out the window way back in '77.

Great models anyway. They certainly add flavour to the scum faction.

You say you're new to painting .. might I suggest a few techniques that might help?

1. Dry brushing. This is great for adding depth and contrast easily and effectively. Make sure there is next to no paint on your brush for better results. 5 light coats is 1000 times better than 2 heavy ones.

2. Basecoat, Wash, Highlight. Paint the model the base colours you want and then tidy up any overlaps with a fine brush, add a wash/ink over it and then paint fine lines along the edges of the model. For better results paint slightly thicker 1st highlight (maybe 1mm wide) along the edges and then add 2 or 3 more layers that get finer. The final layer should just be on the corners.

3. For rust try Weathering kits. Tamiya does a great one. If you're female (or know of any), some make-up works too. Just be sure to give the model a blast of matte finish to seal it.

Go for it .. push yourself and I hope you have as much fun painting as I do.

I'd be worried about using my make-up on my models. Make-up is WAY more expensive than model paint for whatever reason.

These are some good-looking conversions!

I've appreciated the faded-future style of the "Ugly" starfighter since reading the X-Wing novels as a teen, but I'm not quite brave enough to chop up my own models (or handy enough to put them back together nicely).

Also, I like the idea of using the Y-wing statline for flying these in-game. I think it pretty accurately represents a clumsy cobbled-together ship with average weaponry.

I'm curious what kind of makeup would you use? but yeah, its not cheap.

They're explicitly not legal in tournament play. Even the magnetized cockpit B-wings and top turret Hwks are banned. Ultimately it's up to the TO though.

Well, that's the same section of the tournament rules that says you can't remove a model from the base and continue playing. And lookey here, the finals at X-Wing Worlds. See that big empty base at the top? That's a Falcon. Apparently. And oh my, they continue playing anyway. Rascals. https://youtu.be/LmB2Py5O_HE?t=46m49s

Magnetized B-Wing can actually still have the same shape, so no problem there. Granted, these are a bit more extreme.. the one with the Y centre still feels like a Y to me. Probably works best in an all Y-Wing list, as there can be little confusion if all your ships are Y-Wings, no matter what they look like. Indeed, if they have different upgrades, it'd be easier to tell them apart now! Nice work by the way.

Well of course... I imagine that ruling is just there as IP protection more than anything. No one at my local scene bats an eye at my big pink Decimator with Battletech turrets (the stock tiny turrets' guns broke off within a week). I for one would love to play with/against "count-as" uglies, though I'd probably favor the Z statline over the Y's.

You're right, make up is more expensive. My wife didn't balk at paying $60 for lipstick recently. But you only use a little bit. This is the product I was talking about. You dust it on and it gives your models a rusted or worn look.

we'll probably see uglys within the next few waves to fill out the scum list

I ignored this topic all day yesterday because I couldn't stomach another, "Will we ever have uglies" thread, but now I'm pleasantly surprised. Good Job they look great.

Nightshrike, It's like I said in the other part of the forum, Just bring your normals too. If he does as Hujoe Bigs says he would do, say fine I got normals. If he's going to play a prick part the subject with the TO and waste time. At such point you shrug and pull out the real Y. It makes him look like a fool in a Competitive environment. The TO as I said will either green light it or flag it and say no in the beginning.

I like both but I'd paint the wings to match your hull

Im averse to uglies myself. There is not usually enough thought put into how functional (even within the physics and tech of the universe) they would be. But if they have to be there yours look great

Custom Ugly!

Is okay I know its a love hate relationship.

Yeah my lipstick and eye pencils are probably worth 1.5 minis each.

Personally? Keep them in the books. Was an interesting idea, but honestly, not a fan of them in the slightest. I don't mind small conversion on models like wings and magnetization, but this one is kinda stretching that rule to its limit.

Are they actually part of the EU? I always thought they were just lame fan made mashups.

Well I hate the uglies. But I think you've done a great job on your custom models.

If you brought them to a tournament I would totally let you play with them just so I could have the satisfaction of BLOWING THEM TO PIECES! :)

They were from the X-wing Rogue Squadron books, which I grew up with.

What I never understood about them, was if you had enough parts to make some Y-Ties and some TYE-Wings, why you couldn't just make some Tie Fighters and Some Y-Wings...

I think the idea was that they're cobbled together from junkyard pieces, but I agree with you, if you've got the parts for both, you've got the parts to make decent ships too. I don't think they're necessarily logical. I will say though, when I used my beat-up scyks, and my TYE-wing, it had a super scummy look. It just oozed character. So, I didn't get to run with it in the tournament, but in the friendly match before the tournament I think it really added some flavor. It also helped that the other guy was flying rebel, and he had a Y-wing, so it helped to separate my group from his visually.

I think it would look really cool to see them across the table from me. They are cool looking ships. It's just the illogical aspect to the design that always bugged me a little in the back of my mind.

i always loved those uglies my favorite uglies is by far the z-ceptor i mean look at that badass ;P he knows how to strike fear into u ^^

Where is your reference for the banned magnetized B-Wing cockpits?

They were also extensively featured in years of RPG products.

Hey Nightshrike how did your tourney go? they let you play your ugly or did they just ooh ahh and out right No?

The TO liked it but said it was illegal. I played a friendly match with it prior to the tournament start, and I think it really added a lot of flavor to the game, particularly since he played rebels and had a real Y-wing. It helped to set the scum apart as being a bunch of ne'er do well pirates in my view. As to how the tournament went, well, I went 1-3, which sucked badly. I lost to an IG-2000 list where the last remaining IG-2000 had one hull point left, and that hurts to leave 50 points on the table knowing that the battle wasn't nearly as lopsided as that result looks. I got smoked by Soontir Fel with autothrusters, largely because of how hot the dice were on his side of the table (he rolled 4 natural hits followed by three natural evades one turn, for example). And my last match, I rolled badly on attack, and didn't do enough to mitigate that with tokens, and ended up losing pretty severely.

All in all, it was a good learning experience. I'm going to rethink my list prior to regionals. I may go fly imperial, as that seems like a lot of fun, and that was where my heart was when I started this endeavor. I'm really looking forward to the TIE Advanced fix, I think that'll be cool. And now that I've seen how to fly autoceptors, I'm going to fly them, as they were my original goal when starting out.

Where is your reference for the banned magnetized B-Wing cockpits?

It technically changes the shape of the ship, which is what is banned. Changing their orientation on the peg doesn't.

It's a stupid but legally understandable rule.

Cev- Its true. I am averse but keep getting requests fro them. And i hate to turn down requests. I just try to make the design at least capable of forward flight *L*

I was able to see Nightshrike's TYE-Wing in person yesterday just before our store championship started. The pictures don't do it justice. Nice job.
