Uglies

By Nightshrike, in X-Wing

So I was inspired by the TYE Wing thread to make some uglies. I couldn't get the nose of the Y-wing right to save my life on the Y-TIE, but I think the TYE-wing turned out better than expected. I was experimenting with rust for the first time. Anybody know if these are legal to play in a tournament as Y-wings? I'd love to use them tomorrow with my scum setup.

They're explicitly not legal in tournament play. Even the magnetized cockpit B-wings and top turret Hwks are banned. Ultimately it's up to the TO though.

Oh well. I've got plenty of real Y-wings for the game, just thought it might add some scum flavor.

You should... your mods are bloody cool.

Bring some unmodified Y-Wings just in case someone's got beef with you using them.

Love them both, but that TYE-wing is great!

Those are some nice conversions.

Thanks guys. I couldn't leave the Y-TIE with the nose looking that bad, so I gave it a heavy dark gray wash and a little bit of dry pigment, and I think that improved it. It's still not perfect, but it's not going to make me crazy.photo-45_zpszuqfzeaf.jpg

Kinda prefer the old one, to be honest.

"Counts as" ships, especially creatively designed ones, should ALWAYS be allowed. Nice job!

I'll keep tinkering. I didn't like the obviously screwed up paint lines. I'm kind of exhausted today (finished quals though) so maybe that's why I can't paint straight.

I understand that Disney has put their foot down over FF ever making Uglies as part of this game. Then again, creating a homebrew Ugly seems almost to be the perfect way to go about it!

Where'd you hear that? Designer interview or?

Look sharp! Uglies were always favorites of mine -- very piratical! -- in the old WEG/D6 RPG. Lots of those, and Z95s, in scum swarms, would be super flavorful.

Personally? Keep them in the books. Was an interesting idea, but honestly, not a fan of them in the slightest. I don't mind small conversion on models like wings and magnetization, but this one is kinda stretching that rule to its limit.

I'm not trying to stretch any rules. There are none concerning what you can do with plastic models you bought and paid for. If I have an opponent in the store champs tomorrow who thinks they would add a fun flavor dimension, I'll fly them. If not, I've painted up some cool Y-wings too. As to their appearance, I personally think the Y-TIE as a ship looks cooler than a TIE fighter stock, but that's just me. Was never a big TIE fighter fan. Interceptors now...that's a whole other animal.

That's just your opinion. I love uglies, personally. They are perfect for pirates because pirates have to use whatever they can, including broken down and busted starfighter hulls.

I think that you have two very well executed and attractive models of a very silly idea. That is, I applaud your artistic ability but find the concept of uglies ridiculous. Your talents are greatly in excess of the person who conceived of the idea in the first place.

Most of the designs just wouldn't work. For example, how does the Y-TIE even move? It has no engines!

JUST SAYIN' :)

Yeah, but it looks COOL. Something about solar panels on a Y-wing has just always appealed to me. And the thirteen year old girl in me is super excited to have something for Corran Horn to shoot (in his green X-wing, which I guess I need to paint - not a freaking E-wing).

Anyway, thanks for the compliments, I'm really extremely new to painting. I'm amazed the TYE came out that well. I'm quite pleased with just throwing rust washes on top of dark gray washes on top of rust washes until it looks dirty and beat up.

Those both look really cool. I remember when they were in the Xwing series of books. I would be pysched to fly against them.

I would be delighted to see those on the table, although it's the TO's call whether it's legal. Have fun with them tomorrow!

Ouch .. chopped up 2 beautiful models. My heart hurts every time I see these kind of conversions. I'll say a little prayer tonight.

I love painting minis but I can't bring myself to touch the SW ones in case I butcher them. I applaud your commitment.

The Tie with Y-Wing engines ...awesome. As stated before, I can't get behind the Y-Wing with solar panels. But hey Not a single SW ship would be able to steer in space anyway (only engines at the back to push it forward) so I guess physics went out the window way back in '77.

Great models anyway. They certainly add flavour to the scum faction.

You say you're new to painting .. might I suggest a few techniques that might help?

1. Dry brushing. This is great for adding depth and contrast easily and effectively. Make sure there is next to no paint on your brush for better results. 5 light coats is 1000 times better than 2 heavy ones.

2. Basecoat, Wash, Highlight. Paint the model the base colours you want and then tidy up any overlaps with a fine brush, add a wash/ink over it and then paint fine lines along the edges of the model. For better results paint slightly thicker 1st highlight (maybe 1mm wide) along the edges and then add 2 or 3 more layers that get finer. The final layer should just be on the corners.

3. For rust try Weathering kits. Tamiya does a great one. If you're female (or know of any), some make-up works too. Just be sure to give the model a blast of matte finish to seal it.

Go for it .. push yourself and I hope you have as much fun painting as I do.

Wonderful. I wish I had the skill (and free time) to make something like those two. I just hope FFG have Uglies lined up as the Scum faction without them is as wrong as putting Han on the table without the Falcon title.

Oh, I wasn't down playing your skill/painting on the ships. Im just saying if you try to use them in a tournament, that's pushing the limits, if I saw them across from me, I would ask you to use a actual model. You could bash your ships to pieces, its your model you do what you want.

Well, that's the same section of the tournament rules that says you can't remove a model from the base and continue playing. And lookey here, the finals at X-Wing Worlds. See that big empty base at the top? That's a Falcon. Apparently. And oh my, they continue playing anyway. Rascals. https://youtu.be/LmB2Py5O_HE?t=46m49s

Magnetized B-Wing can actually still have the same shape, so no problem there. Granted, these are a bit more extreme.. the one with the Y centre still feels like a Y to me. Probably works best in an all Y-Wing list, as there can be little confusion if all your ships are Y-Wings, no matter what they look like. Indeed, if they have different upgrades, it'd be easier to tell them apart now! Nice work by the way.
