Epic Play Errata'd

By Pinch1loaf, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Along with the new FAQ I noticed that the tournament rules for epic play were updated as well. So I took a look at said new tournament document for epic games and noticed some new errata. A few different things caught my attention:

1.The big one being the "ERRATA" that shots beyond range 3 with primary weapons only grant ONE extra defense die instead of the original one per range increment beyond 2 as indicated in the original Huge Ship Rules. My question:

---> I don't see details for huge ship related stuff in any FAQ. Are we to consider the tournament rules the FAQ for huge ships?

2. Large ships start with full engergy, then gain energy after a maneuver, but energy gained has to be placed on the ship card and cannot be allocated to other cards until after the "gain energy" step. My question:

---> So when starting off the energy gained from the first maneuver is essentially wasted?

Any additional insight would be welcomed. Thanks.

Yes it is. That allows you to go full speed during round one.

You could use engine booster. Then the maneuver earns you one energy.

Also Navigator is not allowed on Huge Ships.

And Biggs does not protect Huge ships.

Its hard to find.

I was over at the BGG forum and someone there chastised me for pointing out differences between Core Rules and Tournament to a new player. They insisted that everyone (I guess other than me) only uses tournament rules.

But if we look at the FAQ there are plenty of differences.

Starting Energy for one.

Does everyone use the tournament for everything?

In my experience, outside of casual games at home most people use the Competitive or Tournament rules. It's easier to keep one set of rules straight than it is two.

Most people do, but only because then they don't have to change how they play if they happen to go to a tournament.

But you should always point out the differences between the standard rules and tournament rules, because not everyone does in fact use them.

I have a question about starting at full energy. Does that also include your upgrades, such as hard-points that can store energy? Or just the value on the ship card?

just the energy value written on the card.

My experience is that most people use a bit of a blending of the two. Virtually everyone uses the tournament rules (or something similar) for determining initiative, but they may be less formal when it comes to pre-measuring boosts and barrel rolls, for example.

We tend to use the normal FAQ for the Mission Play (like the Corvette Mission). You are correct that there are several significant differences; starting energy, whether Biggs can protect them, and now the range ruler rule.

If FFG didn't include a different set of Huge Ship rules in the normal FAQ, I'd assume the Epic Tournament Rules apply to all; but they are clearly keeping a different set of rules for Huge Ships in the normal FAQ, so it's either sloppy editing or intentional. E.g., maybe they think +3 Defense Dice at Range 5 is just fine for the CR-90 campaign.

Either way, I think as long as you pick a consistent set of rules for your play group, you should be fine. We just stick to the base FAQ for our campaign play.

For what it's worth, in the announcement today about the Imperial Raider, they linked to updated Huge Ship rules, which make clear that the Beyond Range 3 errata applies to all huge ships in all formats.
