Cloak rules seem like a tipped hand

By EbongHawk, in X-Wing

Didn't find a post for this yet but I can't be the only one thinking it.

Maybe I'm reading into to this a bit far but is anyone else thinking we may get a cloaked ship for wave 7 now? It seems like a lot of work for a ship that was maybe a little OP but not unbeatable. I'm sure they'd been thinking about this for a while to shake some variation into the meta but it really does get my spidey sense tingling. Now do battle in the sections below.

news article mentioned phantoms directly, so I don't think the errata necessarily implies the arrival a new cloaked ship

"Overall, this change helps bring the TIE phantom to parity with other ships without taking away what makes it special."

they did use the wording "High PS ship with a cloak token" ("and it tempers the extreme positional advantage of high pilot skill ships with access to Cloak tokens") so sky's the limit, but I don't think this change directly implies that we'll see more cloaks in wave 7

plus it's hard to imagine something that could be even stronger with a cloak than the phantom already is

Come to think of it, I rather hope Ms. Eclipse isn't actually an Advanced pilot. That would somewhat diminish my chances of actually getting a Rogue Shadow, unless FFG starts stacking pilots in alternate ships.

While the Phantom itself is beatable under the old rules, it pretty much forced you into thinking about how you're going to deal with a Phantom during the list building phase, and as such limited the amount of variability you saw in top lists. Pretty much every competitive list had at least one of the following:

PS10+ ship (typically with movement actions)

Turret

Phantom

As such, it truly limited both the EPTs and the Pilots that saw play (at a competitive level). This ruling obviously greatly affects how a Phantom plays, but it allows for someone like PS7 Xizor to actually get a shot in on PS9 Whisper. So, this is more of a "we want to see more variability in lists" than anything else imo.

Maybe not a tipped hand, but fixing the action does mean another cloaking ship could be added without so much bellyaching.

I just am getting the feeling that between the new rules, scum lacking 2 ships, and acrylic cloak tokens in the recent packs that something has to be coming soon.

StealthX mayhaps?

Valid point

I thought about a stealth x too but I'm doubtful that we'll see a boost for the x wing any sooner than a wave that includes the movie ships.

Another, if somewhat unlikely, possiblity for a cloaking ship would be Moff Tarkin's Carrion Spike. A huge ship that can cloak could be a heap of fun and it would be a good way to get Tarkin into the game.

I'm trying to imagine a huge ship barrel rolling, and I'm calling shenanigans right now. Also: a huge ship that can give its entire self 2 green dice every turn, _plus_ reinforce a section? More shenanigans.

Although: the Huge ship PS 4 thing is interesting.

Decloaking a huge ship would be a pain in the arse. Can't see it happening :P

My co-worker says stealth bombers...

Not having access to ACD (which is the cause for much bellyaching) on ships other than the Phantom would keep them from causing as big a kerfuffle as Phantom's did even without this change.

ACD is a Phantom only upgrade. Other cloaking ships probably wouldn't be able to cloak for free.

The chances of seeing a large based cloaking ship like the Rogue Shadow, or the Sith Infiltrator (Scimitar) are now almost zero, given how much better they would be blocking. The Phantoms are going to be bad enough.

I'm calling it. The Emperor grants the cloaking action to the ship he is equiped on!

Cloaking seems to have opened up a bottle of whine that really needs to be corked back up. Because of this, I hope the Phantom is the last cloaked ship we'll see.

Never say never.

Aggressors (as a large based ship) are also incredibly good at blocking already, partly because of the trend toward high PS ship builds... will be interesting to see how that changes after the new rules.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see either or both ships in the game, but this cloak change makes them harder to balance.

I've been hoping for the Rogue Shadow for too long now.

Given how Rebels is slated to overwrite TFU on the whole origin of the Rebellion thing the chances of the Rogue Shadow getting past LFL are low.
