400 Points - Change anyone's mind on a second core?

By megamen, in Star Wars: Armada

Initially I was a no. It was very tempting, but I just didn't see myself trying to cram 3 VSDs into a 300 pt list. Plus, you can buy the dice and maneuver tool seperate. I just didn't feel like it was worth it at the price point.

The downside to this conclusion was that I'm likely going to be the primary buyer in my friend group, so we'd be stuck with 1 damage deck unless others bought in and were present.

After opening my core set and playing half a learning game, and then seeing the 400 pt tourney standard, I realized I'll get a lot more use out of a second core.

I'm all in. Buying my second core set today.

I appreciate the help, but my FLGS sells it for $69.99 plus tax. Easy to justify the extra $10 when I'm not paying shipping and I have it right now.

wow does your FLGS match online prices? Tha's pretty cheap.

Their everyday prices are 30% off MSRP. It used to be 40%, but they had to change it a couple years ago (understandably so).

yeah, I am still happy I ordered 2 cores. expensive as **** here in Canada, but going to be worth it. I am looking at prices and to get all the doubles of everything included it would cost basically the same to buy xpacs but I wouldn't get tokens. So while I may miss out on some cards in the beginning I am sure I can pick them up later as I am a big fan of the models so far so having a few extra ships will look good on my shelf

well, i ended up paying $60+tax at my FLGS. Granted i had a $20 birthday Gift certificate, and turned in my loyalty card for $20 for spending $200. But unlike SOME PEOPLE i supported my locally owned brick and motor store where I would actually play the game tomorrow

I don't think I will ever pick up a 2nd Core Set - unless they're being sold super super cheap. :o

Unfortunately, I need to weigh my financial responsibilities carefully. Although I do have room for some 'fun' I need to consider the big picture and leave myself a comfortable 'buffer' for unexpected expenses and so forth. :P

That said, I have all ready ordered my Wave 1 expansions along with Dice!! Although I am wondering if I should pick up an additional Dice Expansion for the big Wave 2 ships. :D

As far as Wave 2 is concerned, I have set aside some funds in my 'war chest' to accommodate at least 1 of each product. Although I am tempted to pick up at least two ISDs.

Timothy Zhan, I'm looking at you! Hehehe.

I have kind of a funny way of deciding how many ships to get for now. Until further notice I am getting enough ships to run one of each named variant if I so choose, so 3 of everything from the core, and 2 of each non-duplicate from wave 1.

because this is such an expensive buy in. my wife and i are splitting 2 cores.

i take imperial ships and she takes the rebels. this way we each also have a set of dice, range rulers and movement template

for those thinking about a secondary core set, if funding is tight. i recommend finding somebody to split costs so you get a lot more bang for your buck (assuming of course your willing to dive into only a single faction)

Local gaming store, won't even try to sell Armada, and the other is only selling at MSRP, or 10% off is pre-order and can't even say if it will do tournaments - so I ordered online to save $35. The socal store that does do sanctioned gaming tournaments always requires a booster/expansion pack purchase to join a tournament (even for X-Wing). So - if they want my money - they should host tournaments. I am not going to pay extra from them if they will host tournaments for every other large current game set, and can't say if they will even try Armada.

I was on the fence about this game but the more I've read about it and having a strong local player base immediately upon release I'm in. I've played a lot of space combat games over the years, sweet spot for rules vs. playability, it's the game I've probably been waiting for since seeing Star Wars in 1977, yadda yadda yadda. Was going to buy 1 core and buy some ships from Ebay sellers that are piecing out core sets (one seller in Canada already is) but with matches moving to 400 points 2 core sets is the way to go. More dice, extra movement tool & tokens will be nice too. $66 each from Board Game Warehouse with free UPS ground over $100 is a pretty sweet deal so I took the plunge. As far as supporting the FLGS I'll do that with general gaming supplies and my LotR LCG buys since I just took the plunge on that too.

I'd rather be using that money on getting more expansion packs than a second core. Unless I was pretty serious about demo'ing the game I don't see the need to have 12 TIE Fighter squads. 8 is more likely when adding in the other kinds of fighters, and it's probably likely I'll grab 2 fighter packs to have 4 Interceptors to fly cover.

Also don't see the need to run more than 2 Victories when I'll be padding out the fleet with Gladiators, Raiders, and the Glorious Imperial class.

And with CR-90s the only things I'd really want more of (Can't get excited for more than 2 nebulons, the core and expansion), I don't see myself spending so much on another core, as much as getting more of the expansion-only ships.

Hmmm, I was on the fence for a bit, but then I looked at te price at the LGS. $130 Canadian!!! That is still $10 more than the exchange rate! And with having to pay taxes, that comes to $150.

Guess you aren't getting my money, LGS.

Our dollars exchange rate is killing us right now support your local game store. It's the same price at mine

How about Motti and 5x Victory I for 389 points haha

So I called the store and asked if they would do $100 (20% off, essentially). They said no, so I ordered another from MM. Hard to argue with saving $50.

Very tempted by a second core, but X-Wing is on what? Wave VII?! I am pretty sure that I will end up filling my points from coming waves. Basically, I ain't doing a **** thing until I get Boba and the Falcon into a list...

2 core sets is the way to go.

Just be aware that unique upgrades such as commander, weapons upgrades and named ship cards are only available in the expansion packs. With two cores for example, you'll have two frigates and two cards with the same unique named frigate with a special upgrade. But, you can't deploy the same named ship more than once. If you get the Frigate expansion, you get two different cards for unique ship names and upgrades to choose from.

For a 400 point game on the cheap, rebel side, - I can buy the core and 4 expansion packs from Wave 1 and deploy 3 named frigates, 1 assault frigate and 5 squadrons (2 frig expansions, assault frig and fighters). But, I'd would also want the Corvette expansion pack for Mon Mothma commander card. But, one could still use the Core commander card. Even cheaper - I could exchange a frig expansion for the core corvette, or buy the corvette expansion to use it and the Mothma commander card.

I own every X-Wing ship, with multiples of most. I still play squads with all ships from wave 1 from time to time.

ah wave 1,

where some X-wing characters see use

where the Tie Advance is about to make a triumphant return to the scene

where the Y-wing has just finished making a triumphant return with the contents of wave 6

where the ******* Tie Fighter has never failed to be a competitive mainstay since the ******* coreset...

You can see from my sig, I'm going to end up with lots of ships for armada lol.

Yep I'm aware. I'll be buying the expansions too. With the ships from 2 cores I might be buying them just for the cards but I'm ok with that.

@Rowdy - Why WvI from time to time? Do you field them because they are fun and you love them, or are you running them in comps because they are genuinely competitive? I will be mainly a casual player, so fun is the main thing for me, but I will play in the 1/4ly LGS tournaments (that I hope they are gonna run!).

I preordered 2 for multiple reasons

- I want to be able to play the Full Game with my wife, or with Friends who don't own their own copy.

- I would have bought more dice anyway.

- I Love the ships in the core box, and playing multiple of the Same Looks pretty good and "Military" to me.

- having multiples of the upgrade Cards gives more options. Why not play the same card on multiple ships, of you like it.

- being able to play really big battles at some point will be awesome.

- supporting a game I want to be successful

Yeah, there isn't really a right or wrong answer. TIE Fighters are obviously a staple in Imperial lists. And I really like X-Wings and Y-Wings. I usually fill in my Imperial lists with TIE Fighters and usually run a combo of X-Wings or Y-Wings with newer stuff. Granted I haven't really had much chance to play the E-Wing or the YT-2400 yet.

I've figured the only duplicate ship that will have the least value is likely the Nebulon B, the price difference between that and the Assault frigate means three nebulon B's are going to be useless when wave one comes out.. Regardless I'll want the nebulon B upgrade cards, so three of them it is... Otherwise I believe having two core sets offers a significant value per ship assuming you're also going to buy at least one of each wave one expansion.

Though I a strange feeling the Gladiator may become more competitive over time over the victory, ESPECIALLY when the ISD is released.

Originally I was only going to get 1 core. But between getting a good deal for a friend and a chunk of store credit from winning a 40k tourney yesterday, I in essence got a buy one get one free deal. So in a couple days Ill have 2 :)
