So lets talk about storage...

By kujoe1988, in Star Wars: Armada

I bought a tacklebox that should do with me until wave3 then I will be looking at different options

This Plano will work ...

I dont mean to be a downer, but I bet the antenea break off the VSD in a week in that box. Especailly with all those things banging around in there with it. It deffinately needs more protection. Possibly the same for the fighters. The rest looks good though. Perhaps some kind of foam insert with the VSD.

Have you seen the Star Wars Armada tuck boxes designed by a fan to store the Core Set miniatures?

Those would be great. The just put them in .50 cal or .30 cal ammo cans with some foam or garage rags to keep the boxes steady.

Squeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I have X-Wing pilot and upgrade tuckboxes full color that I love. But these are so clean and pretty!

My X-Wing ships (Rebel and Imperial) all have magnets on their bases and I store and carry them in metal Star Wars lunch boxes. Looks slick and they don't slide around.

any have any good pictures of their setup?

I'm just storing mine in pluck foam. For the smaller ships I've got it so that they can stand up on stand inside their tray. For the star destroyers they are off base but there is space for the base and the ships on their sides. Fighter are all on stands and standing up in 2.5" foam. Overall really happy with how I'm storing it. Looks like my trays will be enough for everything I'm ordering for wave 1 which totals out to 3 Vics, 3 Gladiators, 2 Assault Frigates, 3 Corvettes, 3 Neb's, 2 Core Sets of Fighters, and both fighter packs :)

Just finished building crabboks tray design for Imperial Assault. I repurposed it for my armada and wow, lots of space left over in the trays. I'm definitely doing this for IA and my friends armada box. Definitely worth looking into. Only cost me 12 bucks for foam board sheets from a craft store and couple of hours of my time with scissors a knife and hot glue gun.

I have a plano 732 ($40 at all Super Walmarts) that I use for Imperial Assault and it has plenty of space to spare. I may just get more plastic organizers and and easily swap between Imperial Assault and Armada. I may make some custom battlefoam trays to fit some of my other game system bags too, i havent really decided. for now I keep my 3 ships in their perspective plastic holder from the core.

I'm using a Portable Warfare case and trays (which I use for all my minis games, swapping the trays out for whatever game I need to pack up to go play).

I have my Core Set in one of these... http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Double-Cover-Tackle-Organizer/dp/B001ECQPVQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429906707&sr=8-1&keywords=plano+blue . I have the ships wrapped in paper in the larger section along with the cards, squads, and such. The tokens and other small bits fit nicely in the top compartment. Once more waves come out, I'll split my Imperial an Rebel(scum) into the different halves. Works well so far. I would worry about the antenna breaking off of my Star Destroyer in this set-up, but it came broken off(Thankfully FFG is sending me a replacement for free!). I might upgrade from the paper to foam inserts down the road.

I will worry about storage once I know how tall is a ISD on its base.

But it most likely will end up to be some sort of tall briefcase made of tin with foamcore divisions.

resing this from the dead... any new solutions?

I grabbed a Stanely tool/parts sorter box this week and my MC30 doesn't fit in the larger cups like I thought it would (0.3cm too long... how silly) so looking for new solutions... none of the plano's in stock looked like good ideas...

looking for something smaller than my 5 tier tackle box for Armada... a) so the wife doesn't blow a gasket, and b) for easy transport of all the game pieces back and forth.

Can't help :D

My Models are repainted. Which means they're Revarnished. Which means I toss them, complete, into a cardboard box with all the other models.

Tokens are in craft box tray.

Upgrade, Ship and Squadron Cards in a 3-Ring Binder.

I take the tokens and Binder in a backpack, and generally carry the box on Public transit.

SirWilli's micro Hangars and some "really useful boxes" are the best budget option. I used them for a while but eventually splurged and bought the Feldherr cases and honestly you should just do that.

you will end up buying multiple cheap solutions that just don't work right or do not fit everything perfectly and in the long run spend more money than you would if you just bought the good stuff upfront.

Plano 1374 ( http://www.walmart.com/ip/Plano-Guide-Series-Drawer-Box/13283387 ) and a Plano large tackle bag ( http://www.walmart.com/ip/Plano-Large-Bag-System-with-Utilities/13283389 )

Bag holds a pouch with the RRG, FAQ, and any fleet lists. Inside is room for 4 regular Plano 3700 series or (like I did), 2 deep 3700 series. One is broken up into compartments, the other is just a large open container, with room to put the new wave 4 ships when they come out.

The 1374 can hold 4 regular Plano 3700 series trays, and has a large area on top for more storage.

I got the 1374 already for my X-Wing and its great.

but I love those deep trays... those look like what I want...

Bass Pro or other outdoor stores should stock them. Bass Pro actually sells their own brand that are the same size, and a bit cheaper than the Plano brand. The container with the Victory SD's and ship bases is the Bass Pro version.

Unfortunately you would need to hack the tray guides inside the 1374 to make the bigger trays work.

Apologies for the necro-posting, but I have a question.

Feldherr or Battlefoam?

I've been looking at both, and can't decide. I do have a Feldherr bag for X-wing, the foam is excellent, the bag is beautifully built, though it lacks room for bases. I'm currently using Plano boxes and love the 3750 box, high enough for most ships and enough room for bases, stems and tokens. Though sometimes I don't like how my ships rattle around in them.

So I want to hear some opinions.

Feldherr has a separate foam block for the bases for the large ships. Feldherr has you have noticed, is very nice and very expensive. I saw a reddit post once where the guy custom built box storage, using the original armada box and foam sheets. Seemed to work great for wave 1. Feldherr also has their foam blocks in boxes on amazon that are a little cheaper than the ones in the fancy bag.

I use a Stanley toolbox, bought some foam and spent an afternoon cutting triangles in it with an exacto knife. It's not the prettiest, but I can shake it and nothing bounces around. Would post a pic but phone posting. Holds just the ships though, still gotta lug a tackle box along for the tokens and cards.

Like Jukey, it takes a bit of time (though not as much as you'd think) but buying some upholstering foam or an equivalent and cutting bits out is as cheap as you're gonna get and frankly it's the best option.

The pre cut stuff doesn't make the most efficient use of surface area. Because you're working around your collection and not some hypothetical collection, you can tetris your collection together much tighter and use a much smaller container than the pre-cuts allow for. Obviously this also means you can customize for a container you already have.

Like I said, cutting the foam is not a big deal. A marker for making reference points, your collection to base those points off of, an exacto knife, and a free block of time (great thing to work on while watching a show) are all that you need to secure your ships in a way which no other option really matches.

You also get little foam cutouts that look like squishy space ships to play with at the end of it all.

Currently I use these, they stack, are durable, and with the foam are very good for keeping this nice and in good condition. Also I upgraded from a plano tacklebox and this is much much better in my opinion.
