What the new FAQ means for the TIE Defender.

By Biophysical, in X-Wing

quite a few imp ships care quite a bit less of debris

the Defender is one of them (yeah the greens ******* suck, but the white 4k is still there :) and the ability to take control cannons make debris fields a worse proposition for the opponent)

phantoms can still scoot around them pretty trivially with a large, pre-manuever barrel-roll

as mentioned, soontir benefits a little from going through them

the firespray has two arcs to utilize while it's shedding the stress caused by the field

rebel non-turrets are not going to enjoy debris field with their predisposition to jousting. Only the sensor or potential FCS B-wings won't find overmuch (will just go around or through without a lot of action loss)

of course, Dash will have a ball

Honestly the defender really needed2 slight turns as greens. It would be so much easier to play.

I haven't been to any premiere events yet and I know that everyone seems to hate the defender but it is pretty big in our local meta. I'm struggling to think of a list prior to scum that ran anything that didn't have a defender or a phantom. I'd love to see more defender lists in the future, it has always made for a fun match here and getting deeper into tournaments I'd love to play a familiar ship elsewhere.

I love the defender, I dont need new rulings or FAQs to play one.

Rex+VI is a good counter to PS9 ships

Double PS1 Defenders is also extrmely fun - the remaining 40 pts you get whatever you want, I did a Whisper + 2x Defenders list, didnt win every game but could have done better in half of the losses~ (dice are unforgiving on poor lil whisper)

I like Defenders though Ithink the tax they pay for that white K-Turn is a bit too high for 30 pts base ship cost and only straight greens.

Another way to describe my feelings on stress: I have purposely flown Rexler into asteroids just so I don't have to pick up stress from doing a 2 hard vs a 3 hard (and still won). I really hate stress on a Tie Defender and the legality of Debris fields may make things harder for me and my play style.

I am also worried about the introduction of the Debris Field. The Debris are large and after considering upgrades, the Hawk and the Tie Defender will have major issues getting rid of that stress.

The first turn you K-Turn onto a Debris you will have a single stress vs most ships that will get a double stress, however, in subsequent turns there will be fewer opportunities for the T/D to get rid of that stress to restore its action economy. Most expensive ships have secondary modifiers, be it security droids, auto-thrusters, R2D2, C3-PO, fire control system etc. The Tie Defender (other than Vessery) has one action and that's it! Loosing that one action it due to stress from larger debris fields will be tough and it will happen many times.

I have been flying around debris fields since I got my decimator. I can't think of a single time I flew into one with any ship in dozens of games. No big deal.

I've had a stressed Defender use the Kturn 5 or 6 times in a row beacuse of how things were positioned and good estimation of where my opponent was going.

That stress is not the end of the world~
