Is the PS war over?

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

I suppose autocepters are better than interthrusters.

You keep your interthruster out of my autocepter... that's how babies get made. I think.

inter (prefix meaning "between") thruster ("one who thrusts")

auto (prefix meaning "automatic") ceptor (could be an abbreviation of "conception")

so we have something that thrusts two things together

and something which automatically convieces

Before we declare the clone PS wars over, shouldn't we hear from some people who have played with and against Phantoms before _and after_ the change?

it's going to be a while before april 15 :(

Blasphemy!

Actually, there is this whole group of people who have been playing phantoms like this for awhile now I bet..... you could ask them.

Autoceptors sounds better to me as it makes me think of them as "auto includes". Or....most Imperials will probably start with a Soontir Fel in their list and then think about what else to bring. Or, they make a cool concept, like a particular Decimator list, and then make sure they can fit Soontir Fel in.

Maybe we should just say Auto-Soontirceptor?

Autosquints.

Or even asquints.

Too many syllables makes for too much radio chatter. Then Wedge gets in trouble.

I think we will move toward more of a bell curve of PS now that S&V is out and phantoms must decloak earlier, but there is still a tactical advantage of high PS and a point/swarm advantage to low PS. But to truly fill in the middle of PS, we need all named pilots to have an EPT option. There are plenty of mid-PS pilots who would enter the fray if they had an EPT slot at the same point value they are now (or even similar points in some cases). We've got great diversity presently with S&V, but this would make it even better.

I also don't think that autoceptors will be the next big thing. They will come back a bit from their low % use in tournaments, due to not everybody flying a fat turret, but they are no fat Han or decimator of doom (decimator + vader). I love my interceptors, but I'm also realistic. Recent changes such as the FAQ and autothrusters have improved game balance, not swayed things drastically to the other side.

if they're auto-include, might as well call them Interceptors :P

Interceptor is derived from "To intercept," which is pretty much lifted straight from the latin word that meant basically the same thing as it does today- At least according to a quick search.

So there's nothing dirty going on there, at least.

Nothing is stopping anyone from running lists under that change right now outside of tournaments. Anyone that wanted to play with the new rules can do so and report back. I'd like to think there will be people that do that. I haven't really run the Phantom much so I'm not really good at flying it, but this new rule will be how I do learn to fly it.

I believe we have at least one report from someone who did just that already, actually.

I think you'll start seeing ps bidding again. Predator is still around, so paying the extra point to get above 2 PS on your swarm is going to be big. Since there is going to be more 3-4 PS stuff, I expect mid PS to get a little stronger.

There will be less fat turret lists now that you can play 8 ship swarms and not auto lose to phantoms anymore. They will still be around I assume, but now they stand a chance of losing to someone playing 8 ships because people will actually start playing things like blue thunder or swarms again.

What I've been trying to tell my play group for months now is that Fat Han is only so predominate right now because of the prevalence of his Ideal Target, Whisper. Without the Yin to his Yang his viability is going to go way down. This single errata will for all time be the one most confidence gaining thing for me in a game company. They admitted they had a problem, analyzed it, listened to community, sorted out the bull crap from the legitimate, and came up with a change. Interestingly I don't think this change nerfed it per se, I think it just modified where it gets it's power from. It's still freaking great, it just doesn't break the laws of maneuvering anymore and has a much much much wider array of building strategies.

I don't think I'll easily give up on those benefits just because the Phantom menace has been somewhat reduced.

I see what you did there.

Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

The Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Now those were some really long range bombers! ;-)

I also believe the high PS bidding war is over. The one thing not really being talk about is the higher potential to block Phantoms now. Ships with BR and/or boost will have a much better chance at blocking the Phantom and getting a little action denial in there. This will be a viable tool for the lower pilots who can now toss themsleves in front of the phantom where it was impossible before.

Somebody missed the reference ;)

Great quote btw, one of the best movies of all time!

Ah, but all phantoms, regardless of PS now have a chance of blocking other ships too (with their decloak). So it kinda evens out in the grand scheme of things, although who gets the block now will depend much more on player skill than before (I think), and that's probably a good thing.

Especially because they have lost the option to see the board and just stay cloaked. Now if they choose to decloak and get blocked with no available shots, they won't get the decloak move next turn.

I don't understand how decloaking earlier makes the phantom less damaging

It doesn't make it less damaging. It does make picking a decloak direction less of a sure thing.

The Internship? I think it was a Vince Vaughn movie (maybe dodgeball?)

War, war never changes.

Not according to a certain Solid Snake...
