Smuggler's Outpost

By Merlinus12, in X-Wing

This is my first foray into terrain painting and construction. This station is intended to be used in an epic-scale, objective-based game. The hanger can support any ship large size or smaller.

I'll post additional pictures as I begin finishing it out. I plan to add a plexiglass force field and some LED lighting as soon as I get some time. I also have several 3D printed turrets coming in that will be used in the scenario designed for this terrain piece.

That looks COOL !

Needs lots of Sand around it, and a YT2400 or a Falcon parked up front :)

Looks like a combination of Scratch building and kit bashing perhaps ?

Great for Displaying models.

All the best,

Barry.

Glad you like it! I'm not entirely clear on the difference between kit bashing and scratch building, but I'm happy to explain how I made it!

The structure and landing pad are made of foam board with the edges covered by strips of manilla folder. The stuff on the roof is from a variety of sources: the dome is a milkshake lid from Sonic. The antennae are X-Wing pegs. The pipes are leftover sprue from various plastic models.

The asteroid itself is made of lava rock, spackle and sand, which I then painted.

Such great use of stuff that most others wouldn't even think of.

That's such an awesome building. It screams Star Wars.

Added LED and made some improvements to the interior.post-244807-0-67750900-1427764329_thumb.jpg

Wow. That looks great. Update us again when you can.

Scratch building is just that: fabricating all the parts, or at least all of the major assemblies, of a model. Kit bashing is when you take an existing kit or kits and "re-purpose" them. Taking the carriage of a half-track and adding the turret from a tank to create something completely new would be an example of kit-bashing.

I really like what you've done. The undercoat on the asteroid looks rather white, which would normally be a negative for me, but it contrasts nicely with your grimy hangar. Well done!

that's wonderfull

Good looking piece of terrain, especially as it's your first go at making the stuff. I wish X-Wing's system could support more terrain... but it is big empty space out there I suppose. Anyway great work and the LED stuff is ace.
