My house mates at uni were obsessed with FF. I always thought it was cute but daft.

You'd have some character who would summon up a spell

A cloud of red fire materialised in their hands as they uttered some eldritch phrase... a beam of magenta light shot into the heaven and destroyed a planetoid... the planet turned into rocks that began to circle the beam, coaleccing into an armoured statue of a space knight wielding a sword bigger than the knight....

The knight would swing the sword over his head and a bolt of irradescent cyan energy would hurtle towards the enemy...

*poof*..'two points of damage'

it was so gloriously over the top....
