Do you run lists with soul?

By Deepspace5, in X-Wing

A list with soul has a named pilot. A soulless list would have no named pilots, only generics.

Do you only play lists with soul, only play soulless lists, or just play whatever is most efficient/best in your eyes?

Some of my friends and I make it a point to not play a soulless lists, but include at least one named pilot when creating new squads to play with.

What do you do?

I come up with names and back stories for all 8 of my bandit squadron pilots and now you're saying they don't have souls!!! :'(

hey man, don't go insulting those nameless pilots. They have wives and families to go home to and only 2 days left until retirement (especially all the tie fighters)

as for me I can't help but include a named character not for any "soul" really but because I enjoy playing a ship with extra mobility options or are highly mobile but become more dependable with a pilot ability (keyan and soontir respectively), most of which happen to be named characters

For mobility, Keyan and Jake farrel are my top rebel picks

For dependability, Soontir is an obvious choice, but I also really love Xizor and Guri over in scum

Really? All the unnamed pilots are male?

Or married to people that identify as female.

or, indeed, as nikk pointed out

they can be female, or have husbands, it all depends on what's more tragic for the narrative

I play what I want to play. Not necessarily what is the best, but what I think I will have the most fun flying. Most of the times, there is a named pilot but it is in no way a necessity. I also like to build around a theme. A Tie Swarm has a soul on its own.

Unnamed pilots are "immortal" and "heores in training". How many times does Biggs have to die to satisfy you? Let him and Porkins rest in peace! :P

My lists have either soul, or black sun soldiers.

Actually, according to the old SWCCG lore, one of our favorite named pilots was just about to quit, too:

DS-61-4 (Pilot of Black 4 at the Battle of Yavin)

"Imperial pilot nicknamed 'Dark Curse'. Survived assaults against several dissenter worlds including Ralltir and Mon Calamari. Intends to retire after his next combat mission."

Too bad Wedge's agility modifier got him...

I'm all for calling people on their biases, but this is the Empire we're talking about. It's not like those Star Destroyer bridges were exactly a rainbow of races, ethnicities, and genders. ;)

That said, I wouldn't let 'em get married in the first place. Fewer death benefits to pay off that way.

assuming the empire even gives out death benefits

with Vader being the loose cannon that he is, tie fighters being made out of spit and prayer, and storm trooper armor being cheap, shiny plastic, I'd be surprised if any imperial citizen could even take life insurance

Maybe there is a force choke exclusion clause. Like an act of God in our insurance paperwork.

we'd also need a "Death Star" premium after what happened to the first two

Wasn't the Empire sexist in its original incarnation? They seem to be depicted as having more women lately but I was under the impression that the Empire having no women in the trilogy was supposed to be a matter of anti-women policies, though not as severe as their anti-alien policies.

Is mayonnaise a gender??

In a galaxy far far away, who knows how sentients act...

I like to strike a happy medium between named and generics on the whole.

To me, Keyan farlander leading a flight of three B wings is quite fitting with the mythos but on the flip side 'rogue squadron' gave us 'flights of heroes'.

I try and avoid using 'notably dead early on' pilots alongside stuff like ewings etc as it just feels a bit wierd to me to have Biggs next to corran horn :)

On the imperial side i either fly faceless swarms of Ties led by a 'heroine' like howlrunner' *or* i have some elite interceptor list, this *used* to include a generic royal guard but since i've swtiched from 'tanky' (shield and hull upgrades for all) to 'slippery' (stealth and autothrusts across the board) i've found the spare points to make all three pilots named ones.

I am soulless and my lists are the same.

(insert ginger meme here)

Well I'm sure anyone would insure accidental death in Storm Trooper live fire exercises.... that would be a gold mine.

When you've got soul everybody knows that it's alright.

Yeah, I enjoy having at least that one named Pilot because they are leading the other ships into battle. It feels very thematic. It doesn't always work out to have all named pilots, but having them there is definitely a bonus.

I do like the idea of creating backstory for all of the generics. Feels weird to me though.

Not if the unnamed pilots are lady pilots.

Up until scum, I preferred generic pilots. Mostly because I didn't think it was appropriate to have the iconic heroes dying every battle. I'm loving the scum unique pilots however. it's kind of a 180 for me
