play surface

3x6 is a little to big to just play on the dining room table for most folks especially those used to the 3x3 of xwing so I thought I would share my solution for other games with you all. I just bought a 4x8 chunk of foam insulation from a hardware store. The one I bought had 2ft sections you could break off so it got knocked down to 4x6. Its super light, cost like 20 bucks and all you have to do put your playmat of choice on and you're gtg. Worked for 40k, bfg, FOW, and other games. The only problems I have had are 1 my cat liked to climb it when I set it against the wall and 2 if the table its on is to small you can knock it over leaning on it. Keeping it in the garage solved the cat problem. Just something to consider.

Check out page 10 of the rules. A 300 point game is actually a 3x4 play area. I am not rule why they require a 1x3 area on the sides for a 300 point game, but a core set only game is just 3x3 play area, no required empty areas.

I do wonder is when Wave 2 lunches and games are officially 400 point fleets, if the play area then becomes 3x6

Wrap in black felt, voila. Maybe spray paint a star pattern.

3x4 is the setup area the whole 3x6 is available for maneuver.

He is right, the 3x4 is just the setup area, most likely to prevent players from setting up in opposite corners preventing them from getting engaged for a couple rounds. But you can use the whole 3x6 when the game starts.
