Model Quality

By Frobozz, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hi, I am new to this forum and have been holding off buying anything until now. I decided to take the dive and picked up the Han Solo and Chewbacca packs. I was mostly curious about the quality of the sculpts as I haven't seen many painted examples. I am a model collector first and gamer second.

I have to say I am quite impressed with these two models. The detail is very nice and the likeness to the film characters is impressive. I also like the fact that the material is pretty hard, much firmer than the WotC models which are rubbery and bendy.

Can't wait to get these painted and also pick up the base set. And more expansion packs, of course!

Yeah, they're really solid minis. Once I get my current backlog of minis done I want to get my squad for Regionals fully painted.

While overall satisfied with the models (not great but soo much better than WOTC), I am not impressed by my Chewie model. There are huge gaps between the shoulder and body. The pics make the model look like single pose plastic and I opened it and the arms were glued(?) on seperately, and in the worst way ever. It looks like a poorly assembled sweat shop dollar store toy.

I'd like to send it back to FFG its soo bad but will likely fill with green stuff and pull out the sculpting tool because I already waiting long enough for these models while the strike crap went on.

They are ok models, but not on the level of most miniature game lines.... they are more like really detailed boardgame pieces .

They are very good quality tabletop minis BUT as miniatures they are at best "ok" quality. That said, they still look great. :)

1. Details are nowhere near as crisp and distinct as actual miniature models.

2. The material is difficult to work with (mainly mold line cleanup).

But you can check the painting section and see how great they do look with paint on :)

The WotC minis were marketed as toys and not models, so they had to use toy plastic instead of model plastics. The plastics being used in the FFG products are much better plastics used in models. I wish they had used the same plastics that GW used but it looks like they went with the same stuff that Privateer went with.

I like them, they're basically the same as the Bones stuff Reaper is using now. Some sort of polymer plastic, because white metal is just way too expensive now days.

They are not however as detailed as the resin Warmahordes or GW plastic stuff, it seems. It's still got nice detail on it but my other mini's seem to be a bit better that way.

That said, it has the advantage of being easier to work with and modify, it's also more likely to bend rather than break, or be dented. If you drop one of the old white metal or even older lead mini's it's pretty much going to be toast. You drop a IA or Bones mini and worse case is you may need to touch up the paint.

But again on the bad side, it's more prone to be distorted in shipping, my Vader's saber was curved. But on the plus side, a little heat and you can reform it, something you can't do with other materials as easily.

Yeah, they are not GW plastic model quality, but I wasn't expecting that. GW models are 2x the cost, if not more. They are well beyond any board game plastic pieces I have seen, but I don't own any other current board games.

For me the key is that they will look pretty good painted up, which has already been pointed out.

My Chewie has the same issue with arms but I have no problem using green stuff to fix that. Fur is quite easy to sculpt.
