They also added the same stupid change to Playmats for standard tournaments. If you're going to use a playmat, you can only use the official FFG Starfield map. They do not give TOs flexibility to use other mats.
This is, frankly, the most annoying decision they could have made. I expect most venues will either give it some latittude, or will just play on tables that have been marked off into 3x3 squares. Expecting a 30-person event to have 15 FFG starmaps seems a bit unreasonable.
Ugh, that's terrible. The FFG mats are annoyingly slippery and quite expensive.
I just read the setup rules, and I didn't see this. Where is it?
Page 1, second column, second paragraph from the end of the page.
If playmats are used, only official FFG X-Wing™ Playmats are allowed. This is to guarantee a consistent experience for players and prevent any advantage players may gain from familiarity with a particular map.
You know? That... That kind of makes sense. If one player is so familiar with one of the maps that they can tell exactly how far it is from the left side of the death start to... Whatever, then they really do have an advantage.
I think the solution is to mandate more, rather than fewer, maps, though.
