Debris tokens: tourney legal

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing

So can 2 big rocks be in play?

Link?

New standard rules are up. Debris tokens are now legal, as players each provide three unique asteroid or debris tokens to create a pool of six tokens to share.

FINALLY

Can you throw up a direct link? For some reason, I can't download the file.

FINALLY

Finally, the very first update since they were released allows them to be used.

If both players bring the big rock, yes, I'd think.

So we all need to mark our obstacles since they'll be mixed during play?

This. This worries me greatly.

Without the detailed rules, it will be hard to say, but I imagine each player just brings a set of unique obstacles, and then both players draw from the pool of 6, 9, or 12 unique obstacles (depending on if there is one or both set of debris alongside the asteroids) until 6 are on the table.

Your 3 unique obstacles are used for the entire tourney.

They also added the same stupid change to Playmats for standard tournaments. If you're going to use a playmat, you can only use the official FFG Starfield map. They do not give TOs flexibility to use other mats.

This is, frankly, the most annoying decision they could have made. I expect most venues will either give it some latittude, or will just play on tables that have been marked off into 3x3 squares. Expecting a 30-person event to have 15 FFG starmaps seems a bit unreasonable.

The Debris Cloud Rules are also in the Escalation Rules, which are now a separate document:

Bring three obstacles

Each player must also bring exactly three unique obstacle tokens of his choice. Players must select these obstacles from the six asteroids included in the core set and the six debris clouds included in the YT-2400 and VT-49 Decimator expansion packs. Each obstacle chosen must be different; the player may not select two of the same asteroid or debris cloud.

Place as normal (from the combined pool of both players) during setup

Each player places his three unique asteroids and/or debris cloud tokens next to the play area to form a pool of six obstacles. The player with initiative chooses one of these tokens and places it into the play area. Then, his opponent chooses one of the remaining tokens and places it into the play area. The players continue to alternate until all six tokens have been placed. An obstacle token cannot be placed at Range 1–2 of any edge of the play area or at Range 1 of another obstacle token.

Ugh, that's terrible. The FFG mats are annoyingly slippery and quite expensive.

I just read the setup rules, and I didn't see this. Where is it?

So...each *player* may not choose two of the same...but as each player is only contributing 3 of the 6, the RESULTING set might now contain two of the same?!

Wow...dawn of the Age of Large Rocks, it is....

I just read the setup rules, and I didn't see this. Where is it?

Page 1, second column, second paragraph from the end of the page.

If playmats are used, only official FFG X-Wing™ Playmats are allowed. This is to guarantee a consistent experience for players and prevent any advantage players may gain from familiarity with a particular map.

Okay, that's not cool. I'm pretty sure that all of the local stores are just going to ignore it unless it's a sanctioned event. It's kind of ridiculous to expect a store to have a dozen official mats on hand for a game that's a relatively small portion of their sales.

This is a fantastic change, in my opinion, and adds a whole new layer of complexity to tourney setup. And it lets you have a greater amount of control over the obstacles.

Edit: the playmat rule is absolutely stupid and leaves me very disappointed with FFG. I understand the reasoning that they put in the document, but that doesn't make it good reasoning. For one thing, now absolutely every playmat you use has rounded corners -- does that mean that we're counting those toward the playmat's area? Secondly, this highly encourages the use of taped-off areas instead of playmats, which will result in more variances than a standard third-party playmat would. And it's not like they're actually avoiding the issue of "familiarity with a particular playmat" -- those who own FFG mats, specifically the Death Star one, now have a distinct advantage over those who don't.

I generally have a lot of respect for FFG, but this is a really stupid move. I'm not sure if I'm willing to overlook it because they haven't made this kind of decision before, or if it hurts even more for that same reason.

And list building. You have to pick which obstacles are best for your list before the event starts.

The fact that it's not even in red text makes me wonder if it was a change that they were dabbling with and wasn't final, or what.

However, IIRC the Death Star mat was never tourney-legal to begin with according to its own press release, so it's literally just the Starfield map that's allowed under the current rules. I sincerely hope they give TOs flexibility to use other mats.

They later edited that press release to say that both were tournament legal.

That was changed within hours of the initial announcement. Both mats should be legal at this point.
