Got my set- quick modded fighters...

By russrmc, in Star Wars: Armada

hey,

I got my set today and immediately modded the paint on the fighters. Super simple to do, just a quick dash of red and a dot of black before a wash of ink. I did the entire set in 10 mins but it makes a difference- I recommend it!

Shown with their 'big brother' reference model...

doing full repaints tomorrow on my rebel ships :)

Those look nice, I plan to do the same :)

Shows what a little touch can do to bring the look up drastically, well done.

PS. I noticed you have a broken x-wing as well :(

Well done sir... I plan to do the same when I get my set tomorrow. Did you do the wash on the entire model or just in the back?

Did you undercoat them?

What paint did you use?

Oh and btw; job well done!

If it is not too much to ask, please do a step by step!

This!

Freaking awesome dude!!!

So I'm not the only one. Some of mine came broken as well... So did my Star Destroyer :(

Still trying to fight the urge to get this game, but...

...if...

...IF...

...I do, then I don't think I'd be able to fight the urge to make the Rebels look more rag-tag. Basically same simple painting you did - couple stripes, then a dark wash...but I'd definitely use red, blue, green, and gold stripes to mix up the formations.

That'd look reall y thematic on the table, across from the uniformly-grey Imperial forces.

thanks all :)

Step by step (this is SUPER simple!)

1- with a thin brush, run a line of red paint down either side of the nose. The mould line actually acts a brush guide.

2- turn the base so the x wings face away from you. Run a red line on each rear wing panel. This is quite well defined on the model if you look.

3- add a tiny black stroke that starts just in front of the cockpit 'dimple' and ends inside it.

4- after a few minutes drying time, wash the whole surface with a dark wash, concentrating it around the main body/engine.

for paint I used Privateer Press acrylics, but GW, vallejo, etc would work just as well. My shading wash was actually the superb Tamiya "smoke" translucent wash, which dries glossy and acts as a sealant but watered down ink, or a GW wash would work too.

There is a LOT more I could have done and no doubt some micro scale paint gods will put me to shame, but as a five minute fix I am happy and this'll work for all the various fighters with a little tweak :)

So a wash is basically " dip the miniature in a diluted paint solution, and let dry" simple.

very well done. i think you could wash it some more though. i tend to do the wash just "all over". the point where the one laser is broken off i.e. could need a little more shadow.

momma Wedge's so proud of her little x-wings :)

Thank you. Now I don't have to ask a stupid question!

I'll never forget the day I discovered washes. My mini painting was never the same (in a good way) again.

Will a water-based wash stick to the un-primed plastic?

I didn't have an issue using GW washes. I scrubbed the minis to clean them up before though.

To the OP: those look great! I'd like to see what you might do with the TIE Fighters.
