Phantoms just got nerfed, hardcore

By WickedGrey, in X-Wing

When you have people winning store championships with only 86 points, it's reasonably safe to assume that something in those 86 points is badly undercosted.

And the 60+ points for Fat Han? (because the leftover points are filler and we all know it). :)

Fat Han was never my list, so I'm speculating a bit here, but Han's escorts are pretty important. By himself, Han doesn't have the firepower to win a timed game, and I suspect he'd suffer in pretty much any untimed game as well if he didn't bring friends.

I thought FFG was opposed to such extreme changes to rules.

Probably they felt they had to do something about the strength of Phantoms in the current Meta.

Way to go FFG! You just made another useless ship!

Yeah but now imperials have another useless ship lol.

I'm not going to lie, I face palmed when they actually put "Experimental Interface is unique. Only one copy may be in your squad."

This destroys Phantoms. A glass cannon that can not arc dodge is worthless. 4 green dice is not what makes a Phantom great, it's not being shot at all. This totally sucks and I feel that in one fell swoop Phantoms went from maybe, possibly being a hair over powered(not even really as a good player can usually kill them anyway) to being slightly over coated glass cannons that will see very little competitive play.

I would hardly call a 4 attack/evade dice ship useless. Yes, phantoms won't be ruling the roost, but it will actually require more skill to pilot them. I look forward to the challenge.

Ahhh, good to see overreaction already.

I really think people are over-reacting to the decloak nerf. Yeah, you are going to have to guess where your opponent is going to go more, but they are still just as maneuverable, you still get ACD recloak. This will make them a challenge to fly, but they will hardly be useless. And if it makes the generic phantoms a little more playable, then so much the better.

Phantoms also become really good blockers now.

Yes!!!! This is the best news I have seen in a long time (and I am an imperial player!)

Just last store championship (2 weeks ago) I had a FULL health and a shield upgrade Rexler Brath with a heavy laser cannon and lone wolf + a full health Tie Fighter go against a single Whisper with full upgrades (still fewer points than Rexler alone, forget the Tie Fighter). Rexler, without a single asteroid hit or a situation where he was getting shot without return fire with his heavy laser cannon was brought down to 1 hit point (thats 4 shields and 2 hull gone) before he did 2 damage to whisper!!!

Whisper would decloak, move, action, fire, target lock, gunner, fire, re-acquire target lock, get a focus, cloak every turn for FEWER points than a single upgraded T/D and would laugh at my heavy laser cannon for 8+ rounds. The store championship was also won by a whisper player too.

I like what FFG have done here! They have given to the Tie Advance but taken from the absurdity of the ultra competitive/imbalanced Whisper.

On the one hand, the nerf is rough and makes the PS bid a lot less important. You still need it to guarentee a shot before they recloak, but they can't automatically arc-dodge.

On the other hand, being able to decloak while Ionized is a huge gain for them.

Advanced Sensors just got really, really good on these guys.

Why does this improve advanced sensors?

It also probably takes Proximity Mine off the list of Phantom counters. Good luck planning out where to drop that mine when you don't even know where they'll be when you reveal your dial.

If they use the Advanced Sensors to get out of the way of a Proximity Mine in front of them. But they must still Decloak before actions. So, Emon will know where a Phantom is before he lobs his mine.

Proximity mines are dropped as an action, i.e. after you reveal your maneuver. But Phantoms no longer fear bombs (not that they ever did).

Because you can now Cloak and Decloak in a real blink. Allowing for neat positioning games. Previously the before dial reveal required you to have a cloak token to Decloak.

We're gonna have to wait and see. I am curious how the change (not calling it nerf as of yet) will affect the Phantom. It still retains secrecy in the Planning Phase, but you get more info in the Activation Phase. Which means it will be easier to hunt for a lot of ships, including APs. The swarm strikes back?

Do advanced sensors kick in before the decloak?

He'll know where they are when he drops his mine. However, he'll have to plan his dial to account for all three Decloak positions.

And non-Emon pilots won't have the variety pack of bomb locations to choose from.

(not calling it nerf as of yet)

Its definitely a nerf, just not as big of a one as most people seem to be thinking.

not sure i'd go as far to say it's useless. i think it more or less brings balance to them as opposed to the top heavy they currently were. it means there is now zero room for error when piloting a phantom. where as before you could just decloak in another direction if you didn't like where your initial plan to move was

this ship is still going to be strong in the hands of a competent player. But they won't be the meta shaping ship they once were.

Even though i love phantoms, i'm glad to see this change. It might finally end this stupid large base turret meta that was used to counter phantoms

Because you're going to get blocked a lot more often. Advanced sensors with a bump is often a best case because you've eliminated one gun that would like to shoot at you.
