Noob question about The Schwartz

By I. J. Thompson, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi!

This has probably been asked a million times, but I've just begun my stint as GM and one of my players and I are reading a rule a bit differently. From the core book, page 278:

"A Force sensitive character may choose to allow one or more (Dark pips) to generate additional Force points - in addition to the (Light pips)."

Because of the "in addition to", my player interprets the rule to mean that Dark pips may only be added if you've also rolled at least one Light pip. My belief is that Dark pips may be added to the Light, even if the number of Light pips rolled is zero. I think this because the first way, it would be impossible for a Force rating 1 character to spend those tempting Dark pips at all (and of course, we're aware of the Destiny point requirement).

So, which is it? If it turns out I'm right, then my player may decide to pass his Sense roll, so we're both happy. :)

Even if you roll all dark, you can still use a power with a destiny point.

-Do or do not. There is no try.

Awesome. One Dark pip per Light Destiny spent, yes?

one DICE converted per destiny.

Lightsiders will ususally get 1 dark pip out of it- there's only 1 double dark.

Darksiders, on the other hand, can spend a destiny to get any of the double light side pips they happen to roll.

Nope. You spend one Destiny Point, then take Strain for each Dark Side pip you change.

Brilliant. Thank you, gents! :)

The Schwartz?

Okay, one final thing:

"A Force power is always 'successfully' activated, even if the check does not generate any Force points to spend on the power."

What's up with that?

It means that the Force action is completed, even if it has no effect. You can't say "I didn't roll any Force points, so my power didn't go off. So, I'll attack with my blaster instead."

Ah, that's what I was thinking. Thank you!

Title has nothing to do with post...heads up

Not seen it, but a quick look on IMDB tells me it came out 28 years ago. That's... a little obscure for references. ;)

The movie is older than I am and I still got it.

Not if it's a Mel Brooks film.

Yes it does. You just have to know the reference. The title translates as, "Noob question about the Force". The post was....a noob question...about the Force.

You would do well to take your own advice as then you would see the joke as it passes over your head. Heh heh.

“A Force sensitive character may choose to allow one or more (Dark pips) to generate additional Force points - in addition to the (Light pips).”

It helps to understand the assumption behind this statement — you might be rolling multiple force dice. Some of those might yield light side pips, and some might yield dark side pips. If you don’t have enough light side pips to do what you want, you can spend Destiny points to convert dark side pips to light side, at a cost of one-for-one.

You can’t roll zero pips. There are no blank sides to a Force die. But you might be rolling more than one force die, as referenced above.

Oh, and “May the Schwartz be with you!” ;)

Seriously. It's... Mel Brooks. Nothing Mel Brooks does is obscure. I routinely sing the "Inquisition" song (much to the chagrin of my wife), find a frightening number of appropriate reasons to say "Excuse me while I whip this out", can surprisingly use "Put the candle back!" in normal conversation, and, of course, everyone knows that "It's good to be the king!".

The man is a legend. May the Schwartz be with you, indeed!

Did I miss something?

When did we get to Disneyland?

Meh, each their own. But I have never found Mel Brook's humour remotely funny.

Ludicrous Speed!

Have you seen Young Frankenstein?

I don't care much for Spaceballs, personally, but it's definitely not an obscure reference (depending on where one lives, of course).

Wow, that's interesting... I had just gone and assumed that Spaceballs was required viewing for any Star Wars fan. I kinda envy the people here who have yet to see it for the first time! :D
