Dunno if you've seen this Kickstarter or not

This guy is making Mouse Pad style mats. Both the 3'x3' and 3'x6' types.

No affiliation, but I did support the kickstarted.

Think I might split the three pack with some friends.

Looks like another mouse pad mat without any focus on the slipperiness of the surface (not the bottom) of these mousepad mats. Fair enough if you don't mind, but the guy who solves THAT problem (and remains affordable) will be the leader in the market.

I orderd 2 of these 3'x3'...They have a discount sale untill the end of the month on certain mats...The video is unique...The company had a rough start after their Kickstarter ended...They are up and running now...

This is what the guy said when I messaged him about slipperiness.

"it's the same, if not better material that FFG uses with their mats. I don't consider them slippery, but someone else might. My son and I prefer mousepad material over the vinyl. I would say that a Yoga mat (rubber on top and bottom) , is the most non-slippery.

I guess if you were playing with someone who was complaining about slipperiness, You could just flip the mat over and play on the rubber side."

Jacob

He has a Death Star trench mat! I am backing for that level!

Bad timing for a playmat Kickstarter - the new Tournament Rules out today say only Official FFG playmats are legal. That could put a dent in this market...

Could you point to the specifics of that statement? I'm going to be getting the Epic mat, which I'm using at home, but I don't see how you can essentially be saying that these are useless...

Tournament Rules, page 1, column 2, second-to-last paragraph:

If playmats are used, only official FFG X-Wing™ Playmats are allowed. This is to guarantee a consistent experience for players and prevent any advantage players may gain from familiarity with a particular map.

So, in other words - in sanctioned tournaments only... Not for home or casual use.

That's like Regionals and National/International events, right?

Jacob

I don't like the playmat rule. It really cuts down on variety. I've got some cool hubble images made into mats and they don't give me an advantage they just add some nice flavor.

Right. So that's a whole lot of money on the tables at Gen Con before the ships even get there.

I like it, but I don't. I have to imagine that the places that hold Regionals basically are signing up for this. It also makes sense from a competitive standpoint - you want a level playing field for everyone, and who knows if a mat being home made felt, or fabric, or vinyl, or whatever, is exactly the correct size and shape. I know at least one of my home made ones we use for our casual tourneys is not actually square.

Anyway, point is, I don't see how it can hurt sales of aftermarket mats. It's a select group that run those events where it matters, and from the looks of things, the mats have to be made available to them before that rule can even be enforced.

Jacob

I just hope that whoever is holding the tournaments now can afford to buy that many maps. I'm not buying a new one just in case the venue holding a Sanctioned FFG event doesn't have enough Sanctioned FFG play mats.

It's not like FFG is sending commandos into your house or your FLGS to confiscate any unsanctioned mats. They're "useless" only for tournaments, and only for tournaments where anyone cares.

You can't fly on your own mat at tournaments anyway. Host stores should be mad at this ruling not us the players. And the kickstarter entrepreneurs are hurt to the extent that they were planning on selling mats to stores for use in tournaments.

I would just spend the $40 on something that is out there already. Nothing really speacial about them.

Haven't you heard? According to the most recent FAQ it's against the rules now to play X-Wing at home.
