What year is it in-universe? They wouldn`t say BBY or ABY.

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

How do people in the Galaxy keep track of time and what year it is? They definitely wouldn`t say bby before the battle of Yavin even happened and maybe not even after, at least not for a while(?).

I guess It can differ from system to system and planet to planet, but is that mentioned in canon or EU? And what about a galactic standard calendar?

By reading these various threads, I recently discovered that there is a galactic standard. Multiple standards, actually — do you go based off the Ruusan Reformation, or any of the various other methods?

Wookieepedia is a great source of more information on this topic than you could ever want to know.

BBY or ABY is most commonly used these days, but if you’re BBY then they might use a calendar based off the Ruusan Reformation. Or maybe some other event — pick your favourite and go with it.

Here's the revised version of my Month/Day calculator using an Excel spreadsheet: http://www.filedropper.com/starwarsin-universecalendarcalculatorrevisedv2

Everything is pretty much explained inside. The Year has to be changed manually once the days reset to 0 (if above 368). Otherwise, Fete days and weeks are added.

According to the Thrawn trilogy, the Empire bases on the start of the Empire, so considering they rule the galaxy, it'd probably be prominent.

So year 0 in bby/aby sense is year 19 by Imperial calendar then. Cool, nice to know:)

This is what I use in my Dark Times, Galactic Civil War games (a.k.a EotE campaigns), simple and easy.

The only current game to set a date, how ever loosely, it is year 16 the Imperial calendar.

Important to note that when the Empire is overthrown, the Alliance/New Republic DOES set the galactic calendar to 0 ABY as a default, as it represents the first major defeat the Empire suffered.

But yeah for now the date is like...19 IE (for Imperial Era) or something similar.

Well they did. Apparently in the new canon the war went on for quite a bit longer.

Hm, they may get rid of ABY in that case. it's just a natural and easy reference point for everything, and logical since it references a definite canon event.

The "war" did in the EU and the Thrawn Triology too, didn`t it, even if the Empire didn`t rule the Galaxy anymore? They still existed to some extent and fought the New Republic I think I remember.

Well without spoiling too much, apparently the Force Awakens takes place 30 years after RotJ and the war still rages on.

Legends canon says it ended 19 ABY, which puts it at 15 years before The Force Awakens takes place.

It officially ended around 15 years after Return of the Jedi in Legends but the last significant military campaign ended a couple of years before that.

Interestingly enough, the Rebels show season 1 is set in 3272 LY (Lothal Year).

This is 5 years BBY, which sets Episode IV in 3277.

What happened on our world in '77? :)

Could be a coincidence, but I like to think not.

"Just after Empire Strikes Back", that's the date in my game, lol.

I am considering setting Revenge of the Sith as year 1006 due to a reference to the "Holy Rebellion of '06" in one of the early Star Wars scripts. Thus Yavin would be year 1025. I suppose year 0 would be Ruusan instead of it being exactly 1000 years before the Battle of Yavin.

I don't care about a 'real' date and if I ever met Mrvander I would probably scream his ear off with obscenities around what an awful, horrible troll he is....that being said. It is my belief that BBY/ABY are like the game system an abstract way of informing people of what time it is relative to the films. In actuality the character is saying ~24,000 (or whatever) but for the sake of my players not wasting their or my time going..."huh? what does THAT mean?" I just say "Its 2 ABY."
