Hypothetical: How many points would a Tye-wing cost?

By Squark, in X-Wing

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Rogue Squadron comics or novels (Although how you can be a fan of this game and not have at least checked them out, I don't know), the TYE-wing holds the distinction of being one of the worst fighters in existence. An "ugly," it was built out of battlefield scrap by taking a Y-wing's engine nacells and attaching them to the wing braces of a Tie cockpit. The resulting ship combined the sluggish engines of the Y-wing with the fragility and unremarkable armaments of a TIE/LN starfighter. It nonetheless saw a fair amount of use, as when you operate on the fringes of society, you take what you can get.

So, my question is, how many points would the starfighter cost? Let's assume the TYE-wing's first pilot is PS 1 with 2 attack dice, 1 agility, 0 shields, 3 hull points, and the dial of a y-wing, with no upgrade slots. Now, admittedly, such a bad ship would not have a home in X-wing, as 12 points is probably as cheep as FFG wants to go for ships, and for good reason, quite honestly. But this is the internet, and speculation is always fun.

I'm actually kind of unsure why the Y-wings engines are sluggish, considering how big they are.

I would actually argue that they should have Agility 2; those engines are slinging around less mass than they would be otherwise. It's probably worth about 10 points.

I wouldn't quite give it those stats. The reduced mass due to not having the front of the Y-wing could bump agility up to 2, maybe improve the dial just a tad. On top of that, hull could even go up to 4, because those engines are bound to be more durable than the TIE's thin, flimsy panels.

So, a 2-2-4-0 ship. Pretty darn close to a Z-95 at this point.

Statistically you'd probably be around 6 pts for a PS1 ugly like this. A massive swarm would have some potential early, but would drop off insanely fast as any decent list will be killing 2/turn at a minimum :D

They'd probably make it cost 8 (with 4 hull) to keep the numbers manageable. Frankly I don't expect to see anything lower tier than the Z-95/TIE Fighter/Scyk. Possible exception being a TIE Droid pack of some kind (make them around 10 pts). If they had an upgrade for a controller ship that boosted the Droid swarm that would be hella cool :D

GLORIOUS DIE-WINGS!

They combine the worst aspects of the TIE fighter and Y-wing, so they'd have the Y-wing's dial, a 2/3/1/0 statline and only the focus action.

Well at least Kavil would have his Corsairs to fly with... need some Z-ceptors though.

From a thematic standpoint, a 2/1/3/0 ship is probably appropriate but--just eyeballing it--would clock in at about 8-9 points. That has some potential balance problems associated with it.

If you don't care about that, because you're more concerned with theme than balance, go for it. If you do, then I'd set my sights at 12 points for PS1 + illicit slot, and figure out what the durability at 1 Agility should be. If you go that direction, you can eyeball it as follows: a Y-wing is 30-50% more durable than a TIE fighter, typically. So if you divide its 8 hit points by 8/1.4, you get about 6.

So I'd call the stat line 2/1/5/1 (or 2/1/6/0, if you're really set on your pirates being too stupid to wire up a deflector generator), charge 12 points, and run with that instead.

Cost: your dignity.

Pack up your crap, go home, and weep because of the ugliness that is the Tye-wing.

Which is too bad because it is probably the least ugly ugly.

What about the Deathseed, Deathraven, and "clutch"? Do the Gand starfighters count as "uglies"?

Someones already done one.

I think it should have 6 hull, and come into play with a random faceup damage card with the "Ship" trait (redraw if you draw Direct Hit!).

I actually think the Z-95 with interceptor wings, or the Y-wing fuselage/cockpit with TIE fighter wings both look much cooler. I would love to do a conversion with Y-wing cockpits and TIE panel wings.

It has large thrusters but since the Y Wing engines also involve a fair bit of the fuselage it would be limited by how much machinery could be crammed into the TIE body and stalks

Not only is it prettier, but a Y-TIE might be an interesting ugly. Going from wookieepedia: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Y-TIE

This would suggest something that hits with both TIE and Y-wing lasers, so probably 4 attack dice. It would have the same shields as a Y-wing, but slightly less hull. It would have slightly more agility than the standard Y-wing. So, we'd be looking at something like a 4-2-4-2 ship. That has promise...

Edit: Or maybe 1 agility, but with an improved dial over the standard Y-wing.

But the lack of effective thrustrs would render it pretty useless i would think. The TIE thrusters are designed for a small light no frills ship the Y hull is pretty massive. And since the Y power plant is not just in the thrusters but also the hull it would make more semse to ditch all that and just take the cockpit and put it between two panels with the TIE thrusters. That would minimize mass.

Although even taking into account it is a quick mock up it looks pretty daft
