Devices like the autopilot droid brain and the groundbuzzer are able to take independent actions. However, they don't have any Characteristics, nor any dice pool for determining Initiative. Neither of these matter when the system is used to provide skilled assistance to an operator, but how do you determine the initiative of independently operating autopilot droid brains and groundbuzzers?
How are we supposed to determine initiative for automated systems?
They roll no dice, so they get 0 successes and 0 advantage creating a slot at the end of the pool.
Seems like the simplest answer. At least they're not stuck with using that slot if someone on their side wants to give them one of the better ones.
I would say they act at the end of the turn, or take the action at the same time as a PC slot on the initiative.

What if they are an enemy? Easier to just "roll" as normal and then decide for each side as normal.

True. Like any NPC they could take whatever slot was available per normal GM discretion ![]()

I like this answer. The only question would be if you'd allow them to be part of the pool with the rest of the characters on their side or just force them to be last. For me, that would depend on how "smart" they are. A player's autopilot droid brain that they've been tinkering with (Read: droid brains on the Millennium Falcon) might be able to pick a spot in the player's order while an unmodified droid brain in a Tie fighter I'd force to be last.

I'd just treat them as their own minion group able to choose which slot they use, per normal initiative. No reason to make special rules for this. So, if they're the only minion group, then they'll go last just because 0.0 comes after even 0.2 when counting down.
