Fun, Effective, Defender lists

By Funkleton, in X-Wing

Can't do this yet, but I think this'll work out pretty well once the tie advanced gets its long awaited overhaul:

Darth Vader (29)
Predator (3)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
TIE/x1 (0)

Colonel Vessery (35)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Tempest Squadron Pilot (21)
Accuracy Corrector (0)
TIE/x1 (0)

Total: 100

Colonel Vessery

- HLC

- Outmaneuver

Whisper

- FCS

- VI

- ACD

Scimitar Squadron Pilot

The idea here is that you have Whisper and Vessery posing large threats with their 4 attack dice. Whisper's FCS generates the target locks needed for Vessery. The scimitar is there to be a durable ship that can also generate some locks for Vessery if needed, otherwise eliminating Whisper would also reduce the defender's effectiveness.

A stealth device or hull upgrade might be an option on Vessery instead of Outmaneuver. In the one game I tried it though, Outmaneuver was very effective on him versus the Falcon since he was able to stay out of arc pretty much all game. 4 dice with TL+focus versus 0 defense dice was pretty nasty. Predator on Vessery would be pointless though, since he should have free target locks most of the game.

I've been flying this for the past several months:

Colonel Vessery (35)
Lone Wolf (2)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

"Echo" (30)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Recon Specialist (3)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)

The Lone Wolf on V is just to prevent the opponent from ignoring V and leaving him for last, it doesn't change how I fly V before that point.

I enjoy

Rexlar-Predator

2 Deltas

I have also used

Vader+Outmanuever+EU

Rexlar+Predator

and then either 2 Academies, or a generic bomber with some ordnance.

Or

Rexlar+Predator

Carnor Jax+PTL

Soontir Fel+PTL

I have done pretty well with all 3(+) lists but the tricky part is remembering the Defenders aren't as maneuverable as the arc dodgers so you better plan your moves and know where your opponent will want to go. Conversely also be good about being unpredictable with your flying, your opponent will expect the white 4K ALOT, so if they are in position to block it with inertial dampeners/1straight don't be afraid to pull a 2 straight or 1 bank+barrel roll instead to stop short and unload at range one

Rexler+Lone Wolf+HLC

Howlrunner

Academy Pilot

Academy Pilot

Academy Pilot

Run Howlrunner and her Academies like a mini swarm with Rexler off to the side providing long range support

Col. Vessery+Assault Missiles

Delta Pilot

Delta Pilot

Use target locks from Delta Pilots to help Vessery score a hit on enemy swarms with Assault Missiles. Mop up damaged ships with Delta Pilots.

Col. Vessery+Determination+Cluster Missiles

Delta Pilot

Delta Pilot

Use target locks from Delta Pilots to help Vessery score maximum damage from Cluster Missiles on ships with lots of health and low agility. Determination helps Vessery stay alive. Alternatively you can also swap out Determination for VI if you want Vessery to launch those missiles sooner.

I like flying Double D's:

Rexler Brath

Lone Wolf

HLC

Shield Upgrade/Stealth Device

Colonol Vessery

Veteran Instincts

HLC

Shield Upgrade/Stealth Device

Just blow up everything from range 3 and 4k until you win! :D

I did quite well in a few events with:

Echo, VI, ACD, FCS, Rec Spec

Vessery, VI

Lambda, Vader

Having a phantom with FCS that is the SAME PS as Vessery seems much more useful than Whisper, since you can pick who shoots first based on your target. If it's a Rebel Captive, suck it up with Vessery so Echo can recloak. If it's something else, use the 4-5 red dice from Echo to weaken them, and give the TL to Vessery. If it's still alive, apply Vader crits where possible.

Why run one overpriced, un-competitive, and terrible dial ship with a situational pilot ability when you CAN RUN BOTH?!?

(anyone who has read my posts in the other Defender thread will know to read that with a pinch of sarcasm)

Babysitting the Brass

Rexlar

Vessery+VI

OGP+FO+ASensors

I've only played it twice and it's a fun semi competitive list that works better than I thought it would. Topping out at PS 8 and no hypermobile ships probably dooms it too being second tier, but it is fun to play.

Good man. Am thinking of running Rexlar, Vessery+VI and a Lambda today, but with Weapons Engineer and FCS (both for Vessery, and because it works pretty well anyway). Got a point spare for Adrenaline Rush on Rexlar or so. May even be bringing something like that to a tourney soon, either that or Double Onyx with a Bounty Hunter (PS3 to have a choice of the order of moves/shots, and to escape Predator a bit). Rebel Captive or Recon on the Bounty Hunter.

I was impressed with Biophysical's list/report:

I've only flown this once, but it worked quite well vs BBBBZ:

Brath w/ Lone Wolf, Shield Upgrade, HLC and either prockets or IPM

Whisper w/ VI, FCS, gunner & ACD

Was fun.

ninja'd....

Strange, I would think the raw firepower would take out brath very easily. How did you keep him alive?

Well I will be the first to admit that luck was in my favour. This was a couple weeks ago, so details are a bit fuzzy now.

I remember the first round of shooting had Brath @ range 3 of 2 B's, range 2 to the Z and the other 2 B's were too far. My opponent went for Brath since I flew him towards the middle early and Whisper down the flank. Her decloak brought her in range of the Z and did 3 damage to it, following by 3 more from Brath = Z gone. Return fire from 2 B's did nothing or maybe knocked 1 shield off brath. Next turn we both moved slowly so everything could fire: 4 B's vs Brath with Whisper on their flank (facing me). Thing is, here's where I got really lucky. Whisper was range 1 from one of the B's, and did 5 hits/crits after spending focus and that B got a blank to evade, so bye bye shields. Brath shot next and I remember getting 2 hits + crit thanks to a re-rolled blank from Lone Wolf. The B got an evade, but the crit ended up being direct hit, so I was lucky to destroy a B with 2 shots. Return fire stripped all of Brath's shields but he still had all of his hull. The next few rounds became a furball with Brath bumping and then K-turning and I managed to knock shields off all the B's before brath died (I believe 1 B was down to 2 hull as well). Then Whisper cleaned up.
