Hi all, who has two thumbs and is going nuts on release day waiting for that shipping email. this guy!
Anywho.
I have had a thought, noting the discussions over fleet size and tournament play.
Single Day Campaigns AKA Narrative Tournaments
So my idea is that instead of people rocking up and playing a handful of disparate battles, half of which are IMP on IMP or REB on REB (which in x-wing irks me to no end), with no sort of overarching goal, we make each skirmish part of an overarching battle.
No need for an expansive backstory and narrative, just get some fluff working. For example, The Rebellion is staging an offensive to lift the Imperial sactioned blockade on Sluis - Van, or the Imperial 3rd Fleeet is investigating reports that a Rebel force is hiding within an outer rim sector.
Each player brings either brings 2 lists to the event, one for each faction. The players are then split into 2 initial faction teams determined by the TO or a D6
First round is played out. Each victory grants 1 Campaign point to the winning faction.
Now, if a ladder is being played, For the second round the first round winners players face off, pairing opposing faction players as best as possible. If faction numbers are uneven, same pairings coin toss, with the winner deciding who must change to the other faction. Play on, scoring campaign points again.
Continue until final round ends and a winner is determined.
You should then have a tally of which faction won the day aswell, and thus the Campaign. Beers and prizes all round!
I won't go into individaul scoring and prize awarding and such, thats up to the TO, nor exactly how to lay out the fluff between rounds (But for example, if the rebels win the first round, you could do a little speech about Imperial reinforcements have arrived to assist and regain the offensive)
TOs could also modify scoring and narrative injects as they see fit, such as the final battle scoring double campaign points, extra fleet points granted to factions etc, thats up to them.
I can also see this as a way to link different tournaments together, to provide an over arching Narrative to a season or between different stores etc, without requiring all players to commit to attending every event in order to progress the campaign.
