Target Priority question

By Kilofix, in X-Wing

In a skirmish vs an opponent with a "fat" ship and a bunch of other smaller ships, I'm assuming that you should work on killing off the smaller / less durable ships first right?

And if there are two smaller ships that are equally as durable, but one is an Elite; you should kill the more dangerous Elite first - unless the latter has superior defenses like Dark Curse or something?

Also as far as possible you should concentrate on killing off one ship at a time?

Thanks for the insights.

Depends. Is it a timed game?

If yes always kill the big ship, because he is at a major advantage and will most like win with MOV if time is called and he is not dead.

If no, then kill the small ships first, then work on the big guy.

As for me I also always kill the big ship, unless there is a Phantom hanging around, Because late game that thing is just crazy good. Kill it quickly, then work on a big ship.

You want the ship with the most health dead first because you don't want that alive at the end, then you kill the one that hits hardest.

Interesting.

But wouldn't killing the ships with less health first degrade his overall firepower quicker?

Sorry if that's naive, I'm still new to this.

In general, I could sum up my targeting priority strategy as "take the shot that lets your red dice have the biggest impact".

If my chances to hit two targets are about the same, I'll shoot at the bigger threat.

If I have much better chances to hit a low threat target than a high threat target, I'll take the easier shot to make my shot count.

If something can be taken off the table by landing a shot, I'll take that over a shot with better odds.

Sometimes this targeting priority needs to be adjusted, particularly when dealing with ships like a Fat Falcon that need a number of ships shooting at them to have much impact, or a Phantom or Interceptor that needs multiple fire arcs to pin down. In that case I'll try to take them out first but will shoot other targets as targets of opportunity.

Problem is, you are probably going to be losing ships as well. Against a Fat Falcon, you will not be able to deal ANY damage in the end game if you only have one ship left to attack him with. Against a Decimator, you probably have options but a Fat Han is (practically)impossible to kill late game unless you manage to kill off his escorts without losing any of your own ships.

It reeeeaaaally depends on what the enemy has. If you're up against a Fat Falcon, you've gotta take it out while you still have the firepower to do so.

Generally, however, I tend to pick off the more fragile ships first if possible, because that's less dice coming at me.

I try to think of the worst end game match up and target that ship.

In an epic game you're probably better off killing the escorts first, because they're more dangerous than the biggie itself (in my experience).

This sums it up nicely.

You have to pick what you want to be facing at the end of the match a ship with low firepower and few hit points or a 13 hit point ship with 8 hit points left and a 360 3 attack turret.

I play a lot against a person who flies a Decimator with Howlrunner and 3 Academy Ties. While everyone above would agree knocking out the Decimator and over 50% of their points is paramount - I find taking Howlrunner out first significantly neuters the remaining ties and allows me to turn focus back to the Decimator.

1. Any ship that significantly alters the stats of other ships

2. The largest point ship

3. When unable to attack the largest point ship - pick off the smaller ships

I am in the camp that you focus the big ship down first in any situation, as in the early game that is where you are at your strongest and hence have more red dice to throw at it. If you wait until the late game and only have a couple of TIEs vs FAT Han, well then it is all over.

It would really depend on which decimator it is, if its a decivader yeah kill howl but if its kenkirk you may want to focus him down first.
