Scum Questions

By DB Draft, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Had a Scum vs Scum game and a couple of questions arose:

Guri vs Palob Godalhi

Both say "At the start of the Combat Phase...." If Guri is within range 1 of an enemy she gets a focus token but Palob (an opponent) can remove a focus token within range 1-2. So which happens first? We played it that Palob could always steal a focus from Guri if both conditions were satisfied, is this right?

R4 Agromech and Blaster Turret

If a Y wing with a blaster turret has a focus token and spends this to use the blaster to attack does this also trigger the R4 Agromech ability which says "when attacking, after you spend a focus token, you may acquire a target lock". Isn't the focus token already spent just to be able to use the blaster turret and therefore not available during the dice rolling attack?

We know there are times when you can "spend a focus" even when you have no focus results but we played it that R4 did trigger just by spending a focus to use the blaster turret but we wanted to see if this is right.

When it comes to multiple game effects happening at the same time(Guri/Palob or any other commonly used "start of combat" type things), the player with iniative uses all of their abilities first in the order that they choose, then the next player activates all of their abilities. So in this case, if Guri has initiative, then Guri receives Focus, allowing Palob to steal it a few seconds later. If Palob has initiative, he attempts to steal from whoever, then Guris ability lets her get a focus.

Regarding the blaster turret and R4, I believe the timing allows it to work. Someone else please double check me on this. But I think it would work like so...

1. Declare your target(which begins your attack, fulfilling the "when attacking" requirement)

2. Spend your focus to use blaster turret

3. Acquire target lock from R4 for spending focus

4. Start throwing dice.....

FNG tie pilot is correct on both questions.

Correct.

While I don't think it is stated quite as explicitly as it could be in either the Combat Phase rules (core rules page 10), or Secondary Weapons rules (core rules page 19), The conditions required for firing a secondary weapon (i.e Range restrictions, Attack: Focus, or Attack: Target Lock) must be fulfilled during the "Declare Target" step (step 1)

As the "Declare Target" step is part of the Combat Phase, the spending of the Focus token to fire the blaster turret would be considered as part of an attack, and therefore fulfills the R4 card's condition of "When Attacking" and the Target Lock would be immediately acquired at that point.

The point in the Combat Phase where dice can be modified does not happen until step 3 - "Modify Attack Dice" - as your TL was acquired 2 steps previously, it is perfectly legal to use it at this point.

In fact, you can even use R4 during step 3 to both acquire and spend a TL in the same step - it's not ideal as you usually want to spend focus after you reroll not before - but from a rules perspective it's fine.

Everything works as far as I'm concerned. The R4 and blaster turret timing interact the same way as a blaster turret with dark curse.

FAQ page 11, Dark Curse entry: "“Dark Curse” cannot be the target of a secondary weapon attack that requires the attacker to spend a focus token."

So it's all good.
