Biggs, 2 rookie xwings, and Blount

By Tsquared, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Fairly new to X-wing, so this is the first 100 pt squad I've competed with and it worked pretty well.

I had Xwing Biggs with R2D2 (29 pts)

2 Rookie Xwings both with proton torpedoes (25 pts each)

Z-95 Blount Ion Pulse Missiles and Veteran Instincts (21 pts)

Fairly straight forward strategy. Fly the four together in a square with Biggs and Blount at the back.

Fly straight at the enemy's best ship. I try to engage turn 2.

On turn 2 I try to maneuver my squad as close as I can to the enemy ship, but ensuring that Blount will stay a minimum of range 2 away. This is typically a 2 or 3 straight move. I drop Biggs back, so that he'll hopefully be range 3 or behind asteroids from enemy ships.

Both rookies and Blount take a target lock on the best enemy ship. Blount's pilot skill of 8 (w/ Veteran Instincts) allows him to fire first and autohit the ship with ion missiles. Biggs soaks up damage from range.

Turn 3, rookies and Blount perform a K-turn behind the ship that is ionized and unload proton torpedoes on the target ship.

Strategy worked pretty well, although even regaining a shield on turn 3, I still lost Biggs fairly early,

Let me know your thoughts and how I can improve the squad/ strategy.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

You have some good ideas and some ideas that others have generally learned to be not so good ideas.

Biggs and having 4 ships is excellent.

Using missiles torpedoes on anyone except Blount tends to be a bad idea

So. Drop the torps on everyone.

Don't give r2d2 to Biggs he dies really fast. Give it instead to another rookie. You can use your own freed up points to upgrade one to Luke sky walker. Or wedge Antilles.

Thanks for the response!

So I gatber that pilot skill/ abilities > torpedoes with my strategy

So say I scratch the rookies and r2d2 on Biggs. I still won't have enough pts for like and wedge. I would like to take wedge for his offensive ability as Biggs will soak damage on defense. So what should I take as my fourth ship? Go cheap (rookie) and leave room for upgrades or take another unique xwing pilot who's skill would benefit my strategy?

You might want to consider a slightly different list: Biggs, Cracken w/ Swarm tactics, Etahn, and a Rookie. It's actually worked fairly well for me, when my dice weren't complete rubbish. Cracken draws a lot of threat for some reason, and I'm never sad to lose a 21 point ship first (or second, as the case may be).
