The Delta isn't a blocker though. The lower PS is advantageous for it's white K-turn.
Why do TIE Defenders have such a bad rep?

I disagree. They move, get their action, and block an on coming ship. Next round, white K turn, get action And their target doesn't.

In my experience with Defenders, I find a higher PS to be more useful for the K-turn - when I attack head-on, I tend to find myself at roughly Range 2. Moving after my opponent allows me to K-Turn into the void left by their ship. It's especially useful against large-based ships.
And if they happen to block my K-turn, oh well, I can do it again next turn.

Question I'd like to ask since this seems to be one of the few serious threads on this topic.
Would the Defender have been better off with Boost instead of Barrel Roll?

Says you, you scruffy-looking nerf herder.
How's the collection these days?

Probably.

Boost is really strong on the Defender, particularly in conjunction with the White K, and gives you some beautiful long-range turning opportunities.
Barrel-Roll is better on higher PS pilots, and on the Defender's dial, allows for an approximate 2 Turn that isn't stressful, even if it does eat your action.
I usually shell out 5 points for an Engine Upgrade and an Adrenaline Rush, and go to town with Vessery.
Yes, for the high PS pilots.Would the Defender have been better off with Boost instead of Barrel Roll?
I disagree, in that I find Barrel-Roll to be exceptionally valuable on high PS pilots, and Boost better on low, on every ship including the Defender. I'll have to write something up on this... tomorrow after work ![]()

Quite good (see sigline). Still feel a little guilty about it, but otherwise I'm well.
There's no reason to feel guilty; nobody gave you anything that they weren't perfectly happy to offer up out of the kindness of their hearts.
Up to page 23. Are we talking about bacon yet?
....we are now.

Similar experience here: Fighting against low pilot skills I end up wanted to have had boost (well boost and a free evade, and a sensor slot).
I find that fighting against high pilot skill targets with a Tie Defender the Barrel Roll is invaluable.
Yeah, one thing I've learned from the Defender and Vader, Barrel Roll on the one bank is amazing.

Tonight was our scum and villainy release event, and I brought 3x Delta + Ion Cannon. I've been having some decent success with them, but not tonight. Destroyed a 3x X-wing list flown by a new player. Then I got destroyed by a double pancake list featuring Chewbacca and Leebo. I was so close to Ioning Leebo off the board, but he evaded. At that point I would have been hard pressed to destroy Chewie anyway, so I guess it didn't matter. Mangler on Leebo and Calculation on Chewie meant he was rolling crits left and right! Finally, I faced a 3x Firespray list, and just couldn't finish them off fast enough. It ended with one Firespray destroyed, one with 3 hull left, and the last one untouched. Finished 9th of 11.
So yeah. I think my little stint with the TIE defender is over. Don't mind me as I go crawling back to Soontir Fel. (But don't be surprised if I pull these bad boys out for epic games either!)
I think the Phantom change REALLY hurts the Defender. Since the Phantom change made the generics viable, you can run a 29-point monster like this one:
Sigma Squadron Pilot (25)
Fire-Control System (2)
Stygium Particle Accelerator (2)
Total: 29
You still also have the flexibility of the crew slot. With careful flying the Sigma will live longer, has better action economy and will probably do more damage over its lifetime. Yes it won't be firing every turn, but when it does it really hurts.
Yeah you could be right. I actually always thought that Sigmas were viable.
Fact is that a naked Sigma for 25 points is just plain better than any other ship at a comparable costwoth all those insanely good slots, stealth, its stats and its firepower (with PS 3 for no **** reason, just because the wheed was good while designing...). It's better than a Starviper, better than a 2 point more expensive E-Wing. An it's actually comparable in power level to a naked Defender. If you go easy on upgrades and stay around 30 points it's just plain better than a Defender, period.

I'm not sure I agree. Granted, I was flying this exact same ship prior to the new FAQ was announced, but the changes in the new FAQ do not give it more 'durability' (other than hoping to bump enemy ships with the decloak, I guess---similar to the enhanced scopes + intel agent version). Anyway, I ended up switching to the defender because of difficulty keeping it alive. Part of the problem is its firepower is so great that it attracts a lot of attention----more than a naked delta would.
Having said that, if you have two of them and a strong flanker (perhaps echo/whisper) it might make for a pretty potent alpha strike---more so than you could get out of similar cost defenders. However, keeping it alive long enough to get the most out of those 4 attack dice might be difficult since it can't arc-dodge and its decloaks are more predictible (enemy knows where its gonna be before dials revealed).
