Y'know Nightshrike, I empathize with your position, but at the same time not everyone wants the same thing out of a space sim. You and I love simulators like X-wing, while some people just want to dispense with the complexity of controlling a spacecraft and just hop into the cockpit and have fun. I've played both and enjoy them equally, because my tastes are broad and sometimes I just need that itch scratched without having to worry about all those little things like weapon presets, targeting data, and sensor readouts. But then, sometimes I need to have the full experience when I'm in the mood for it. It depends.

But I'll never understand why people would rather pay 50 dollars for a console "flight" experience when, for the same price, or sometimes less, you could get an incredible experience on PC with so much more depth.
I get where you are coming from, but you are looking at the wrong price. You can drop 350 notes or thereabouts for a console (and you can ting them bundled, "free," with a mobile 'phone contract this side of the pond). The joystick alone for a decent flight sim experience is likely to set you back half that, and a decent gaming PC can easily run to a couple of grand.

Nah, a decent gaming PC will only run you around and maybe even less than a grand. However, that's just the tower.
The monitor will set you back 200 base if you want a 1920x1080 one, you'll need speakers or a headset, you'll need or want a fresh keyboard and mouse... So, you'll end up spending a pretty hefty sum. I love my PC, I love how good it is but I'll never pretend the thing was cheap, and I'll never tell a console player that they could have gotten a PC for the same money. Because you can't.

That's a mischaracterization I feel like. Rudder pedals are pricy, but a decent twist stick is 30 bucks. I use a logitech extreme 3D pro, which is not the choice of a lot of hard core flight simmers, but I like the feel of the stick, and it works well for me. I pair it with a throttle quadrant and pedals, sure, which do run into the higher price bracket, but that's not necessary for the introductory level.
You know what? I think there was a Star Wars or BSG mod out for Starshatter 2.
I may have to look that up.
Nightshrike - might interest you - starshatter 2.
Realistic physics, mainly missile based combat.
Can fly anything from starfighter to fleet., and can lead squadrons.
Also, on the subject of the x-wing videogames - firstly I agree with Nightshrikes pre-launch set up etc. Anyone remember in the original X-wing you could assign wingmen from pilot files? I want that back.
I want a game that can work out how i fly by the metrics (prefer certain maneuvers, certain ship and weapon preferences etc) and then generate a pilot file for me to send to my friends, or store in an online databank to act as an AI wingman, so I can be there in spirit if nothing else.
I'd like said fleet/marine/starfighter command game to incorporate stuff from the janes flight sims such as maintenance/repair times on the ships. Basically, I want all the detail. All of if.
Don't get me wrong, if I am in the fleet/carrier command role I don't want to be micromanaging a boarding op, but if I am leading a marine squad while stuff is going on elsewhere, well that'd be epic.
Edited by DariusAPBInteresting. I may have to go with Star Citizen at some point, though I feel like the ship-purchase model he's constructed is horrendously overpriced. 70-100 dollars for a ship feels ridiculous to me, coming from a game like RoF where ships are 6-12 dollars and are modeled on historical examples with incredible detail.
It looks so nice though.
Have been playing X-wing alliance for about 6 months now. I loved X-wing, Tie Fighter and XvT back in the day. Downloading new missions, making your own .. Loved it all.
If you revisit X-Wing Alliance you must use the upgrade kit from the XWing Alliance Upgrade Team (www.xwaupgrade.com). It is mind blowingly awesome.
I would love the equivalent upgrade for the original X-Wing and Tie Fighter games!!
There used to be an xwa->tie fighter mod, but I can't find a link for it.

Don't give up friend!!
Edited by ConandoodleNah my PC has a specific set up, unfortunately it uses 32 bit Nvidia drivers, so where it'll work with any ATI and 64 bit nvidia, the older xp drivers not so much.
I'm upgrading the old girl to win7 next week.

And my hunt begins..... Sound the horns.

You're running the GOG version and still can't get it to work? That's pretty surprising.

Yeah, graphics taring due to directX9 Nvidia drivers, hence the necessity of upgrading to win7.
