Rogue Squadron, The Movie "Rogue One"

By Munk888, in X-Wing

My Dad was trashing the prequels recently. I told him about a fan edit I saw called "Fall of the Jedi I-III". He watched the first one and was really excited to report that he enjoyed watching it. It edits the movies, but with more of a scalpel then a machete. Jar Jar is still in it, but he says and does nothing stupid. So...he's 90% cut.

Never heard of this, but it sounds great. If they also cut Anakin Skywalker out of the final battle in Phantom Menace, I wouldn't mind a bit. I wonder if there are deleted space battle scenes in the Blu-ray or something that you could use to add in cool parts not featuring annoying characters.

FIFY :P

Set up Queen Amidala as the main character? I am all for that. I watched the battle scene at the end of the Phantom Menace again yesterday, just to remind myself of the horror, and Padme acquits herself quite well. She's cool. The Naboo starfighters start out like they'll be cool, with a Bravo leader and everything. And then it just kind of starts to suck with the Anakin business. Well, not "kind of" starts to suck.

On Hoth they were refered to as Rogue Flight and with Blue and Green Squadrons formed Rogue Group for Battle of Hoth. No mention of Rogue Squadron in the movies. No idea what has been retconned but it wasn't in the movies.

If there's a rouge flight in rouge group you can bet there's a rouge squadron too.

Typically squadrons and groups would have different names, and flights would be subdivided with their own callsigns. It depends on the time frame you're talking about, but for example, a callsign might be Cadillac 1-3. This tells me that the person making the call is on Cadillac flight, which is a mission-specific designation, and that he or she is flying the third ship, or element leader position in the first flight (meaning a four-ship, not mission tasking). So, Rogue 1-1, AKA Rogue Leader, would be a designation solely for that particularly mission, as Rogue in that case would be a mission-specific callsign for all aircraft taking part in that particular tasking order.

By contrast, Rogue Squadron, as a squadron name, would never change, but in most real-world circumstances, it also wouldn't be used in daily callsigns over the radio.

I'd like to edit Jar Jar with a Machete...

a chain machete.. <grins>

Really though let's talk about disney for a moment.

They have a great track record on their non-animated films in the last 15 years. They took a dying marvel and made it awesomesauce. Why can't they do that with Star Wars? Answer: I fervently believe they will. I like Rebels, I enjoyed TCW.

I would have liked a Imperial commando (Republic commando 2) I would have liked 1319(or whatever it was called) - basically a mature rated SW game.

I can still hope for all of this, Disney however need first to develop a good solid foundation with star wars, which they will be gunning for in the sequels. JJ Abrams has already made 2 star wars films (look how the Star Trek films were done, tell me they aren't in a more similar spirit to Star Wars than Star Trek). With an actual Star Wars as base, I think as long as he stays off the LSD he can do it just fine.

Hell, even with the LSD he'll do better than George would.

Not really true. As a member of the 548th sq in the 548th gp It's actually really common for a group to have a matching squadron.

You're right about callsins though.

We likely won't hear much about this movie till after the summer. There was some sort of spat in Hollywood over the name. There's a Mission Impossible movie called Rogue Nation out this summer, so the studios agreed not to promote Rogue One till after the Summer.

I don't get how Disney could ruin anything in the face of the prequels. It would be hard to be worse than those. I wish somebody would go through and do some prequel-era stuff that's cool. I really do like the looks of the Naboo N.1 and I think it dogfighting space pirates has promise.

I thought the Clone Wars series was great after the first season or so.

That's fair. But most squadron designations within groups are sequential, so in any given group you'll only get one matching squadron number.

I'm not big on cartoons. And frankly, I couldn't get behind Grievous and Dooku at all.

Are you in the current 548th group flying drones?

Seriously? I think the general public can differentiate between a Mission Impossible movie and a Star Wars movie. Well, maybe I am giving them too much credit.

I thought the OP had a link to confirmation. Still speculation. That article is nearly 2 weeks old.

And also wrong in calling Luke Rogue Five.

Their whole premise for the article is flawed. Rogue Squadron wasn't in the movies.

Luke Command "Rouge Group" in the Battle of Hoth. That is pretty clear from the movies alone.

I can see Mara Jade being rope-lowered through vents into a governers palace to infiltrate his staff...

His cheeks were awfully pink. I'd always attributed it to the cold weather...

Glad I wasn't the only one that caught that spelling.

If it weren't already taken, we could give them Callsign Revlon.

See "Viewers are Morons" trope.

I grew up reading the rogue squadron books and playing the rogue squadron games. I'm jacked for this. However, i should temper my expectations in case they shat on my childhood memories...

Perhaps that. Or perhaps with so many millions invested in these movies, they feel they assuming viewers are morons is the safest course of action. Why take risks when they're looking for a financial return?

Mind you, I'm not defending it, it stifles creativity and progress. I do get it though. It's why I'm not expecting a female lead either. Could it work? Absolutely. Will they risk it? Probably not.

Or, more logically, we won't hear more until they start filming. And they start promotion on a film that won't be released for nearly 2 years.

Don't set your selves up for a letdown... all of my very professional movie talk shows are saying that it is not a movie about what people think it is about.
