"When attacking" / Opportunist?

By Blail Blerg, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi,

Does anyone know what "When Attacking" means in this game?

Can you for instance, use Opportunist on Soontir and have Yorr absorb the stress and do it again twice?

Your specific example doesn't work for a different reason. Since receiving the stress is part of the cost of Opportunist, you can't have Yorr take it. If you do, the card doesn't activate (in the FAQ under Yorr's entry).

An attack is defined as the 7 steps of combat. So "when attacking" covers from the moment you begin Declare Target until you end the final step, Deal Damage.

Oh okay. I understand, but conceivably, you could still try and "activate" Opportunist multiple times you just wouldn't get anything out of it right because the two "results" require you to obtain the stress and Yorr intercepts it before you ever accept it right?

Right.

When Imperial Aces was spoiled, there was a lack of understanding this point.

If the ruling had come down the other way, Soontir Fel + Opportunist + Targeting Computer flying in Range 1 of Yorr meant a PS 9 ship Alpha-Striking for 7 attack dice on the first round of combat (or 8 if this happened at Range 1 of the enemy), with a Focus Token and a Target Lock.

And unlike with any of the Advanced Proton shenanigans to roll high number of dice, this one also regenerated its ability to fire after Fel performed 1 green maneuver, and Yorr performed 3.

And it doesn't have a range restriction, or firing difficulties.

So... yeah.

Unfortunately, this ruling also shot down my Yorr + Elusiveness combo that I was touting about, because I hadn't seen the Imp Aces spoilers when I came up with it, nor had I seen the Yopportunist rules battles.

Wouldn't triggering Opportunist multiple times be disallowed by the "abilities resolve once per opportunity" rule?

Wasn't around yet either :)

They may not have thought to print the rule, but it was definitely there.

Sure it was. They may not have printed it in the FAQ yet, but take away the once per opportunity rule, and the game shatters. What's your agility when Wedge attacks? How many dice can Backstabber roll? Each of these is a "when attacking", and really obviously only usable once.

Agreed. Howlrunner would have been significantly better; reroll 1 die until you're happy, when attacking!

I get your point, but this is a bad example since dice only being able to be rerolled once was definitely in there. More like you would be able to reroll all your dice with Howlrunner if you could trigger abilities multiple times per opportunity.
