When do you think we will see ...

By any2cards, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

... a new large box expansion with a full campaign?

I know that we have 2 Hero and Monster collections coming, and Heirs of the Blood as well.

I just hope that FFG's efforts are not solely focused on their huge Star Wars effort.

And please, I don't want this to derail into a "we have plenty of content" thread.

Just looking for player's opinions ... do you think we will see a large box expansion in 2015?

mmm....i really wanna say yes to that but like you mentioned, Star Wars Imperial Assault needs to bring in more money as well. So i'm assuming they will just bring Descent stuff out like hero and monster collections, maybe if we're Lucky some more co-op versions but a new large campaign? I really hope so but i doubt it.

But FFG, if you are listening...please bring a new large box out. Hopefully you bring us some snow or dessert tiles :-)

Yes, I also want a new big box expansion with a full campaign and original mechanics like in Shadow of Nerekhall.

As for your question, I don't have high hopes on seeing one this year. I feel like early 2016 is more likely. If a big box expansion is planned this year, it probably won't be before Fall and that would make a beautiful Christmas gift !

I know we have plenty of content for this game, but my biggest fear for my group is that things can become stagnant ... that is to say that without a continuing development of the game, and new content, the excitement can go out of their eyes.

This is why something like Heirs of Blood will at least allow the addition of new quests content which is great.

Of course, my heroes are already in significant withdrawal because of some severe medical conditions I have been battling since last May. It is hard to believe that I have not played Descent 2nd Edition for nearly a year. Sigh.

I enjoy ordering and getting new content as it provides me an escape from my day to day issues, and allows me, as a very evil OL, to plan for the future when I get to play once again. :P :D

I too hope that additional content will be revealed at some point this year. I understand FFG is busy with Imperial Assault however they should realize by now that avid Descent fans look forward to more products. I personally would like to see more class options to balance the colors. Even a mini-expansion would be acceptable IMO. Hero and Monster collections are fun but having new play classes make the original game more fun.

Any2cards I wish you a good recovery, it's really sad to hear that you were unable to play Descent for such a long time, because of medical problems.

I really hope for another big box expansion as well. Seeing how FFG upped their campaign creating abilities with each big box expansion I would love to see with what they'd come up next.

I'm also looking forward to the campaign book, but at least in SoN it was pretty clear to me that a lot of the new tiles got introduced just to make more interesting and highly interconnected maps. So I feel like they are only held back by imagination when creating a new big box expansion campaign, whereas they are somehow restricted by the core set when creating this new campaign book.

If they don't have resources to do such things in the near future it would certainly be great if they release campaign books for the other big box expansion (or at least Nerekhall).

Based on what we have now, I would expect AT LEAST a small box expansion with 1 healer and 1 mage class as we currently have 6 warrior classes and 6 scout classes but 5 healer and 5 mages.

I've made some research and noticed that a lot of Descent designers are not working on Descent at the moment.

Some of them left FFG (e.g. Kevin Wilson).

Some of them are working on IA which I assume is a full time job.

This probably explain why there is so few development on Descent this year.

I don't know about a big box specifically (campaign books might be the current model for quest delivery) but the announcements of Visions of Dawn and Bonds of the Wild confirms that there is development occurring. I guess all I'm suggesting is that not all new content is big boxes. I'd agree that a small box is likely at some point to round out the archetypes that Manor of Ravens left out. I would also love a big box, but more the prospect of new classes than for a campaign- those, to me, are what keep the game interesting. I like the concept of campaign books, and wouldn't be disappointed to see those in the future.

I don't really see H&M packs and quest books as "game development" per say.

Both products introduce little new mechanics compared to expansions. I may be wrong but I feel there is a lot more work under an expansion than H&M packs.

*New tiles
*New classes

*New conditions

*New OL cards

*New relics

*New items/search card

*New mechanics

etc.

Anyhow, it was not a complaint, more a statement. I am still happy to see some new stuff on Descent.

i believe another couple of big boxes in the next couple of years, because this game is one of their more popular ones.

With that at least two more mini campaigns spread out in that time frame. Right now the demand for star wars is big, but they will not forget us. We are getting fed small doses of descent with the campaign book and H&M collections as well as co-op releases.

I've only recently gotten into Descent, and have only been able to play 1v1 against a friend, who only a few days later has lost interest in playing.

(side note: does anyone else know players who will spend 15+ minutes over-thinking about how much set up a game has, whether they want to get stuck in now, only to conclude it's just 'too much'?)

Thank goodness for the solo variants of this game, and the POD co-op expansions. These are all that I have been playing.. that being said, If there was another Big-Box expansion to come out (even mini-box) I'd like it to be a fully-soloable/cooperative ruleset that allows you to inject life into the game when you're the only person you know willing to play.

Now that would be great.

I was just thinking about this. This is what I want to see

1 more mage and healer class so each has 6.

Another expansion with the city event deck. Maybe a big box expansion that combines the use of the regular event deck and the city Event deck

Finish off the 1st Ed upgrades monster and heroes. (who does not want a new Demon :P )

After that I'd be ok with nothing but Book (campaign) releases. But I want ones that include more then just the base game.

And ya we all want more Coop stuff, but I can't help but feel FFG may have missed the boat here. We are getting our 3rd coop and there is no way to combine the decks. Especially the monster activation decks. For the most part the monster activation seem to be pretty generic based on each individual monster. We are getting a duplicate monster in the 3rd coop how different is that activation deck (the merriod part) going to be? probably not much. If they found a way to combine and reuse these monster activations it would have been a start towards a big box coop where we could do coop campaigns. I don't know.

I think Kevin Wilson may have left before Descent 2E even came out. Even if not, he wasn't involved in the 2E rules - his only mention in the credits is design for the 1E game.

That said, I think Adam Sadler, one of the main designers for D2E, has left also.

True. I mentionned Kevin Wilson because he is well known but there are others such as Adam Sadler (like you stated).

Maybe they should have just given them a raise.

Maybe they should have just given them a raise.

Well I think Kevin Wilson left to start his own company so money was probably not the issue there.

Loving the new Mists of Bilehall tiles - Elevation and Terrain!!!, Loved the Manor of Ravens for the Manor and its grounds, Love Nerekhall and the Town above and below

But I'd also love to see some Sand, some Jungle or some Snow - Let me use the Ice Wyrms..

Come on FFG, IA got Hoth!!

Well, we're still in the beginining of the year, but I don't think so. FFG seems interested in release more hero and monster collections, and now those mini campaigns that complete each orther. I can't see new classes coming so soon, neither entirely new heroes.

I hope I'm wrong, tough.

I never really got the idea of the H&M collections. Well sure, more hero's and monsters is better, but with LotW, LoR, TTL, and SoN I already have the feeling we are still a long way from seeing all the combinations. And we play almost every week, which is about as much as I can. They are also a bit overpriced in my opinion, I know this is due to the miniatures, but still that money for hero's and monsters you will rarely field because there are so many and some rumor quests (we already don't play with).. And while I can see why you would want to get 2 or 3, I don't see how these packs can substitute for 'proper' expansions. The game is about completing quests so those should be solid as a rock in the form of well-designed (mini) campaigns.

New classes are what everyone is waiting for. Somewhere on this forum, I read a post that said FFG is announcing the H&M packs faster than they develop them. Small and big box expansions may be a bit unoriginal, but there is plenty of room with them to keep the game refreshing I think.

Well, in the Mist's expansion rulebook, they mention another expansion that'll come out later this year to work as an act 2 to Mist.

I'd still like to see:

Orcs - Just beatstick types with heavy armor and weapons. Maybe something that could fill the role of non-flying, no breath weapon Hybrid Sentinels.

Centaurs - Something with some kind of carry ability to transport other medium-sized units. Obviously limit armor to a brown die, but make up for it with speed and transport.

Plant Based Creatures - Something that locks down units with a trap ability.

Death/Dark/Chaos Knights - Like Ironbounds, but with some type of magical ability either defense or offense.

Better Sniper - Goblin or Orc or Elf. Something to really threaten the Heroes from range that force them to deal with it. Maybe with a power set like the Shadow Dragons.

Yeah if there are evil humans and evil minotaurs, then why not evil orcs. :)

Front Page FFG is showing off the Bantha Rider for IA.

Oh I'd love a large hero.

Did you also notice the price tag? :)

I'll think twice before getting another game that includes so many overpriced small box expansions.

Yes, we don't have to buy them, but if you even remotely like a certain game, you know you will anyway.

It's like smoking, easiest way to quit is just not to start in the first place.
