Thoughts on an Armada Game Mat

By robertleegrant, in Star Wars: Armada

Hmm. So I already have the X-Wing 3' x 3' mat and I like it a lot. But, I understand that while the basic Armada starter senario is played on 3' x' 3', the game is really intended for 3' x 6'?

I could get another X-wing mat and lay them alongside one another. More $, and the ships will spend a lot of time in the center, crossing and recrossing that line.

I wonder if FFG, or someone else, will be producing a 3' x 6' playmat? Did I see one in a picture from a demo at one of the conventions?

I'm just going to commission a 4x6 to have 6 inches on both long sides to have a theme (Imperial and Rebel) as well as rule reference and designated card spaces.

More $$ as well but will definitely be cool.

Ffg are making 3x3 mats that you could put together to make a 3x6.

I have ordered one from Deep Cut studios, but it took 2 weeks to get shipped and I still haven't recieved tracking information, so I'm getting a little concerned :/

EDIT - Funny how life happens, I am off sick today and by chance my postie just arrived with it today! :D Its looking pretty nice, will try measure it up and take some photos this afternoon if anyone is interested.

I went with Deep Cut too. How're you liking your mat MaverickNZ? I am in the same boat where I ordered mine awhile ago and really haven't heard anything from them. Though, in all fairness, they say that on their website.

I ordered the 3x6 Star Theme - Cloth.

Hah, same as mine, it just arrived today :D

Its pretty good, I ordered mine on the 5th of March, so hopefully yours isnt too far off ;)

Will pop up a youtube look at it shortly if you like :P

EDIT: link

This is the style mat - about 50% of the lightness in the video I would say is due to the cloth, and the other 50% is due to the daylight reflecting and making it look lighter on camera then it is to the naked eye :)

Does Deep Cut Studios take Pay Pal? Haven't seen so on their site yet.

Here is the website http://www.deepcutstudio.com

And yes, they only do Paypal - it automatically goes to it when you check out :)

Hmm, I ordered mine on March 1st, so hopefully it isn't far behind. I'm looking forward to seeing it in person. Several reviews have posted pictures or video, and said that the colors are more striking in person, which is what I am hoping for. I understand the vinyl probably would have had better coloring, but I wanted the friction of cloth. I'm debating permanently mounting it on some MDF to create something rigid and 3x6, or even 4x6 with some admin area, that I can just set over top of my dining room table (which is 54"x54", so I don't really have anywhere other than the floor I can lay out a mat like this). Though of course the permanent solution would limit its mobility to my FLGS or friends' places.

Anyone know of some Australia based places that produce these size and variety of game mats? I really really dislike ordering from the UK because of the poor dollar/ pound ratio.

Anyone?

That cloth mat is nice looking. I really, really, like the mat I got from FFG, though. More like a mouse pad than the other piece of vinal I got from another source. I'm really curious if FFG will produce an epic-sized mat.

Has anyone purchased from their site from the United States? I am a little leery of sending money outside of the United States as there is little recourse that can be taken if I'm not satisfied with the shipping or the mat itself.

Thanks

Has anyone tried a GripMat? I saw these a while ago, and they seem pretty cool. They're a little pricey, but not crazy, and it would be a lot less effort than weighting all the bases or something.

Video on their old kickstarter page, it's a little cheesy but the product looks impressive.

Its a little strange there arnt more companies out there anticipating the need for 3x6 or 4x6 mats for Armada before it comes out. Rushing to do it after the ship sails is a bit of a wasted commercial opportunity.

It's just 3x6, the 3x4 comes from the Middle section of the 3x6 that you set up in, so there is 1ft empty on each side.

The learn to play game is played on a 3x3

My friend?

I have recently placed an order for a 6x4 F.A.T. neoprene type playmat from VaultGames in Australia -although it is currently on backorder with a 2 - 3 week ETA.

For us Aussies, it works out SO SO much cheaper to order this type of product from them as opposed to ordering from the US or UK as shipping from the latter two is prohibitively expensive!

I know that it is 6x4 which is not Tournament legal, however I do not intend to ever play Tournament as I will be playing in-house games involving large fleet engagements with hundreds of points in the vein of Battlefleet Gothic. :D

So if any Aussies are looking for a neoprene type mat, consider hitting VaultGames up. :)

Edit: To fix up some dyslexic type mistakes.

This is my plan. And cheap too. And experimental.

  1. Poster if I can get a 3x6 or custom B&W or grayscale print on a 3x6 (color will be much more expensive)
  2. 3x6 posterboard/foamboard
  3. Have someone mount the print to the board.
  4. Plasti-Dip clear rubber coating spray (http://www.amazon.com/Performix-11209-Multi-Purpose-Coating-Aerosol/dp/B000LNN11G)
  5. Spray the poster board - now have a non-slip surface
  6. Do something in order to cut the board in half for storage. Maybe add pieces underneath to raise the board in order to install some plastic hinges underneath the middle to fold the board but keep the seams close together.
  7. Then - Plastic-dip everything else I can with what's left in the can - I love that stuff.

Hey Strike. I ordered from them from the States. I finally got my mat on Saturday, almost 2 months after I ordered it.

There are some pros and cons to the company, I think. They don't provide any sort of tracking information, or any information really, after you make the order. Just a note when you make the purchase that they are processing, and then that you will receive your shipment in 2-4 weeks (for international orders), and to contact them if it hasn't arrived in that time. Well, I waited about a month without getting anything and sent them an email. We went back and forth (difficult due to the time zone difference) for about a week before they figured out that they couldn't figure out where it was and it was lost in the mail. Though the upfront communication was pretty lacking, they were rather responsive by email once I raised the issue, and gave me several courses of action to choose from to remedy the situation. I chose to have them send me a new mat, and that is the one I just got (probably 2-3 weeks after I told them to send me a new one).

I can't comment on the product too much yet. It seems pretty solid quality, and I like the image and the material. If you get the cloth (which I have) it comes folded up in a plastic bag, but the creases can be ironed out pretty easily. That's as far as I have gotten so far, and I haven't tried to play any games on it yet.

I will definitely be ordering at least one full 6'x4' space mat from Frontline Gaming, the one with the three nebulae on it. They're super-high quality, durable, resistant to spills, and aren't so bright that you will lose your ships and/or tokens on the mat. This is of course in addition to the 6'x4' Grass, Snow, and Urban Combat 1 mats that I will be grabbing for other games. I just have to wait for it all to come back in stock (which according to Frankie will be late May).

Hey guys, I've bought a bunch of different mats and finally just made some for myself. I didn't like the vinyl for being slippery & reflective, so I settled on felt.

Here's how I made mine: http://www.outpostzero.net/2015/05/making-space-mats-for-star-wars-armada.html

I definitely don't have the bandwidth to do a bunch, but I have had a few people email me asking about orders and I'd be willing to make a handful more!

looks sweet may give my yoga mat the same treatment

Nice! I might have to do this myself...

I am on the fence about which one to get. I was looking at the F.A.T. Mats and I am stuck between getting 2 3x3 mats or just the 6x4. I am leaning toward the 2 3x3, because that extra foot. Also if I want to play a small field game of just 180 points then I can just roll out one mat. What do other players think? Also is FAT mat a good material. I am not sure on the different types that is why. Is the FAT mats the same material as the official mat Fantasy Flight Games sale?
