[Insert franchise/universe] Armada

By Ghost Dancer, in Star Wars: Armada

Fighters have a presence in the Star Trek universe through "Starfleet Battles" and the subsequent Starfleet Command PC games, I think people's desire to see Star Trek: Armada on the tabletop is due to their not being any decent Star Trek themed games out there, except for SFB. I've heard a bunch of complaints about Attack Wing, crappy paint jobs and severe balance issues.

I think people (myself included) want a good Star Trek fleet game that is:

1. Not on a PC or console

and

2. Not Starfleet Battles (it's a wee bit complex)

I love Starfleet Battles but, *phew* it can be an exercise in memorization and using an index. Teaching it to new players can be a task as well.

Star Trek with an Armada type ruleset would be a great thing.

Have you checked out Federation Commander? It's basically a streamlined version of SFB, though it is still much more complex than the FlightPath/Armada game systems.

I have! FC is great from what I've hears and seen. I did neglect to mention it in my post though. My mind lumps them together when comparing them to games like this. As you said, still more complex than this game system.

I've toyed with the idea of getting into FC, but I'm really deeply invested in SFB.

Yeah, I stopped playing SFB a few years back because my friends found it a bit much -- the phone book-thick rule set doesn't help. ADB also makes A Call To Arms: Star Fleet, based on Mongoose Games' A Call To Arms, as well as Starmada expansions. Those have a much lower cost to play, especially if you go the PDF route.

many existing ones are getting reboots/continuations: Farscape, BSG (supposedly), Stargate, Trek obviously already has (and is beyond current enough, case and point Attack Wing), and as of last august-septemberish, Babylon 5.

Really? When? Where? How?

I know there have been rumours of a B5 reboot (although I'll believe it when I see it), but not heard about any of the others you mention.

You want ships? I'll give you ships! With four factions, each having small fighters, corvettes, cruisers, and other large ships!

I give you FREELANCER!!!!

If you're going this route, you might as well do Eve Armada...

BSG is getting another reboot? Or are they doing more in the current reboot?

EVE Armada would be fun IMO, as would B5 Armada and maybe Wing Commander Armada.

Spanish Armada: Armada!

Twilight Imperium Armada.

Sure, it won't happen because it wouldn't have the broad appeal that Star Wars does...but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be awesome.

Infinity: Armada! (I can dream xD)

Mildly off topic: how about telling us how that whole Drakh plague thing turned out before rebooting JMS?

On Topic: Aside from First Ones, I think B5 cruisers were much lighter gunned than SW universe ships. That -- and the no shields -- makes me wonder how well it would translate.

Yeah I love SFB as well but the learning curve when jumping from Starfire to it was very, very steep. I would love a Star Trek Armada style tabletop game with some mods to Armada's rules to make it fit Star Trek better

B5. Always B5 for me.

Honestly, making a B5 game on your own wouldn't take much.

If you don't have your own 3D printer:

If you do:

Then you just need to paint them and draw up some stats. There's no 'Shields' dynamic in B5, so I think you'd want to change the hull damage dynamic to make Hull Points in each arc. To take out a whole ship, you need to take out 3 arcs.

Each ship type could even have certain effects that trigger once each section loses hull. Example:

Omega-Class Destroyer

  • Squadron drops to 1 when the front arc is taken out - the squadron's CnC is hit
  • If a side arc is taken out, Command increases by 1 (because the rotational section stops working and it's harder for the commanders to work in zero G).
  • If rear arc is taken out, it must use a worse maneuver chart

Ships no longer have 'Redirect' defense tokens, but instead of 'Interceptors' ( http://babylon5.wikia.com/wiki/Defense_Grid?file=DefenseGrid4.png ) that can negate a Pulse Weapon or Ordinance Weapon attack (but not a Beam Weapon attack)

...man, that seems fun to make... Maybe that'll be my summer project...

I second TI armada. I really like that universe, and we haven't had a new game in it for a long time.

Uhh, Rex?

Homeworld would be pretty great to see in the Armada engine as well. Especially since it means ship minis might happen!

Babylon 5 would just fit into this system like a glove. Already thinking on the conversion rules. Models being sourced... I hate when things inspire me.

Eve Online Armada: Offline.

I do hope FFG makes a foray into reviving Battlefleet Gothic.
