Wave 1 on a budget

By Bloodstripe Baron, in Star Wars: Armada

We might not know enough yet but whats the consensus on Wave 1 minimums. With x-wing (the only miniature game I played before this) one of every expansions wasn't unreasonably bank breaking (and spouse hating)

but with armada I'm probably going to have to slow play as I get into it.

I'm trying to build up both factions somewhat equally because (while I plan on focusing on imperial) I'm going to be the sole provider of armada propaganda for my friends for a while.

Maybe one gladiator, one mark II and both fight groups? thats $76 on MM which is still pretty steep.

That's as low as you can go and still get one of everything. I went a little crazy and got 3 vics and 2 gladiators.

Aonther thought has been in the back of my mind. The Armada ships may find their way into the FFG holiday sale right?

It was also mentioned before somewhere to watch MM's deal of the day.

Those two options will be well after release though.

Yeah- that's what I figured. And I don't want this to seem like I'm complaining about price- I just need to work myself in.

Do we know if the repeat ships will have anything different with them that doesn't come in the core?

Mr. Baron,

Yes, you need . . . no must, keep the wife happy! No matter the overwhelming need for plastic Star Destroyers. I have gone a bit bonkers, but I have sold a bit of gaming stuff to make room and money for Armada. As much as the Assault Frigate pains me, because its not OT, it is growing on me and I would say, yes, you need at least 1, so that you or your rebel player can have 1 big ship. I also think that 1 gladiator is a good direction too, as that will give you a smaller SD for the imps. The fighter groups are almost a must, but I really do think you could get by with 6 stands of TIEs and 4 stands of X-wings.

Have you considered just getting a 2nd core? No, big ship for the Rebels and no little ship for the Imps, but you would have a BOAT LOAD of fighters, could be interesting.

I had a post a while ago, that yes, I would have $100 tucked away in Pay Pal to jump on a MM Deal of the Day, which I see being the Assault Frigate and Gladiator. Why $100? Because of the "free" shipping at that price point, yes I am a SUCKER for marketing strategies. I also wouldn't mind 3 Frigates and 3 Gladiators . . . at some point.

May the Force be with you and remember more important than the Force: Happy Wife, Happy Life!

Yes, Mr. Baron, that's the cool thing about the packs, they have a few up grade cards that the core doesn't have and most importantly, nearly all of them (not the Neb B?) each have 1 alternative Commander/Admiral that you can use; instead of the 1 for each side (?) that is in the core.

Thus far, the only Wave 1 item I have on pre-order is the Imperial fighters pack.

I'm planning to do Empire (in case people had not guessed that), but for whatever reason, the Gladiator has not fully enticed me yet. (Obviously it will happen, but it'll happen after I get a few games in with the Core.)

Also, I need for my compatriots in Portland to buy into the game as well.

I think a ship a week will not get the wallet or wife upset, especially when you bring her flowers or a treat on the same day.

This is the first time, I am going to be on a serious budget...first, I really want to test the waters to see how popular the game is, and second, I cannot continue to justify unrestricted buying. Which I think is going to help me enjoy the game more.

Budget? I'm selling Zombicide Season 3 and Axis and Allies 50th Anniversary Edition to pay for 2 cores and Wave 1 extras.

I'd say if you can swing it it's one core and one of every expansion to start. See what you like and then supplement later. I think fighters are going to be powerful so you may want multiples of those soon.

excuse me, but what in the world is MM?

i would like to know since you seem to suggest it is somewhere one can get good deals on FFG stuff.

Minature Market, just about any gaming stuff you would ever want, mostly 30% off msrp. I fully understand the plight of brick and mortar stores, but even one who I support and get close to 20% off just can't compete with some of the online places like MM.

MM and Cool Stuff Inc run daily specials, usually about a month out from a new wave of xwing or probably armada, they will run 1 or 2 ships at 40-50 % off and you just can't beat that!!!

I plan on playing pretty much Imperial only and a Core, Fighter pack, Victory and Gladiator come to about $140 on CSI.

Is there any upgrades that I am going to want that are only coming in the Rebel expansions? I haven't looked into the previews all that much.

I'm going to try to hold off until wave two. I need that ISD.

I try to support the LGS for several reasons and I tend to get a discount. But it is getting harder. The last two waves to come out they didn't have enough to go around and he, politely, pointed out that not everyone gets a discount. I understand his point but on the other side of the coin I could have gone to MM and gotten freight free, no tax, a larger discount and had them a week earlier than the store.

But it is nice going to a brick and mortar and finding someone to play. Doing so I feel compelled to purchase from there. However lately because of the availability issues I have purchased at least 1 wave else where.

The future, hard to see it is, i.e. Time will tell as to where I buy next.

P.S. if the ships aren't pre-painted well then I'm out anyway...

When I win the lottery I'm opening up an LGS that treats their customers right. 20-30% off retail for all items and a strong on-line business too. I want to make it a great place to get products in stock, pre-orders you can trust, and robust tournament support. When people ask "What will you do with the winnings?" that's what I tell them.

Until that day I almost shop exclusively with Miniature Market. There are a handful of game stores here but I don't think they offer enough value to get close to paying full retail. i stopped at one and the person behind the counter didn't even know about the biggest releases coming out that week. Another one I asked to buy a full case of Fantasy Flight Supply sleeves and they offered no discount.

Cool Stuff, Inc. (CSI) is also a good place to look. Their prices are about 33% off retail, and they offer a small discount based on how much you've ordered. On top of that, if you spend more than $100, you can get free shipping.

The Cheapest way is to buy only the core and use your opponents other ships if they have the core. Fighters are all thats needed really...until wave 2!
