Does anyone like the Y wing without a ion????

By bmwrider, in X-Wing

Is it just me or is the Y wing just a one trick pony?

Now I am sure folks use it for fun, but if they want a strong build the Y's only roll is Ion cannon turret right?

Y-wing

Kinda useless like it was in the movie :(

Don't treat the workhorse as a prancing pony. It's cheap, durable, and there's a suprisingly large fight left in the old bugger. And now, with the title, bomb-loadout and the Scum specific tricks you'd do well not to underestimate the chances of whoever fields a pair of Y-Wings.

Some people are swearing by the autoblasted turret now, and I like Kavil with a Blaster turret. So no, not only ion now. With bombs, torpedoes, turrets and the title I would say that (armament wise) it is one of the more flexible fighters out there.

Scum w/ BTL-A4, Engine Upgrade, Unhinged Astromech, and Autoblaster turret. Wheeeeeee!

Last week, 4 Y's all BTL'd, autoblaster, with 2 carrying seismics....made an Aggressor explode in a single round with only half the Y's

Go ahead and say its only an Ion one trick pony lol

I like using 4 scum Ys with BTL title agromecs/ blaster turret. that way you can focus AND target lock. then toss in two seismics. 20 RED dice is NICE...

Kavil + Autoblaster + EU + Unhinged Astro + VI won me a game pretty much by himself. Be flexible and try some new things with the Y-Wings, they're in a much better spot now thanks to Most Wanted.

i think before Scum came out this would have been true but with their new title and bomb options they have gain far more options. Double attacks from the primary then the turret isn't anything to sneeze at.

All three turrets are actually valuable on Y's outfitted for them.

Autoblaster swarms and autoblaster high-ps are doing pretty well too.

I think that an autoblaster turret Y is almost on par with an Xwing or Bwing stock. and the fact you have two points to spend still is just amazing.

S&V has certainly revitalized the Y. I've used it before but mostly with the ICT.

However, as many have noted, it's a kick-ass beast now with the Autoblaster Turret and a Bomb loadout. I flew two Scum Ys with ABT and Prox Mines, along with the Unhinged Astromech. Great fun and booms were had. Kavil too with his Blaster Turret and Opportunist are brutal.

Y-wing variants

1.) ICT (old glory, powerful control ship, hilarious with rebel r3-a2)

2.) ICT w/BLT-A4 (does not joust so much as laugh at your attempts to joust with it, because it's just going to peg you, k-turn, and keep pegging you). Unhinged/r2 almost mandatory for improved positioning.

3.) Auto-blaster (limited, but hilariously deadly. This thing scares phantoms half to death and will guarantee that they never ever attempt to get anywhere near them, either allowing the rest of the squad to get shots or just murdering the **** thing themselves. Surprisingly powerful, deserves to be played). Works really well with unhinged to give you more positioning opportunities.

4.) Blaster + r4 aggro (Default Kavil set, but also only 24 points on Thugs)

and then there's the stupid variants, which are just #3 and #4 with BLT-A4 titles. The auto and blaster turrets already have built-in restrictions, so adding more is just silly

oh, and add bombs to taste. They'll probably be most effective with either ICT variant because you can control where your opponent is going.

I've personally flown everything but the blaster, because it's imo the least interesting

The BLT-A4 ICTs are terrifying versus jousters, and the auto-blasters are pretty **** incredible as basically being feedback array's big, less self-destructive brothers. I've run them either solo or in pairs and they do wonders dominating the table with the threat of uncancelable damage.

Ion gets used because Blaster sucks without an economy booster, or is at least widely believed to. Ion is a very potent effect and just needs to hit to get full effect so having offensive actions on it is less important.

The new stuff from MW is still new, but it's looking to be good.

2.) ICT w/BLT-A4 (does not joust so much as laugh at your attempts to joust with it, because it's just going to peg you, k-turn, and keep pegging you). Unhinged/r2 almost mandatory for improved positioning.

I don't think Unhinged is mandatory for a scum BTL-A4 with Ion. I've run them a number of times with the R4 agromech and hugely benefited from the focus -> TL ability of the R4 while almost never missing the extra green moves the unhinged brings. If you start a round with a TL on an opponent and take a focus action, having two TLs and a focus split between two attacks is just incredible.

I enjoy baster turret Kavil, ran him with some feedback array Z-95s. Was alot of fun.

Agreed

R4 to me is almost mandatory with the ywing title

At the very least you have a focus for your first attack and then a target lock for your second

If things work out in your favor you don't use the focus on your primary and have it for your ion attack followed by a target lock.

Imo 100x better than the Unhinged due to the fact how many times have we all attacked and with no modifiers whiff the roll wishing you had that focus or target lock.

The Unhinged works best when you want to move fast and close the gap between you and your opponent. If using the autoblaster turret Unhinged is great.

Using the ion imo you don't want to get close to fast, and you want to get the biggest bang for your buck, R4 is the way to go

Really makes the ywing a beast to reckon with

Now, it they had turrets in the movie during the trench run, would it have been a different story?

For me, R4 isn't even that clear cut, which is wonderful.

If I'm shooting an agile target at range 2, and I only roll an eyeball on the primary attack, I keep it. I'd rather have the focus token to modify the Ion attack. Worst case scenario, I roll three blanks with the Ion, spend the focus to gain the target lock, and immediately reroll it. Best case, I roll either all hits, or all hits and eyeballs, which gives me a free Target Lock to spend on the next primary attack.

Against long-range targets, spend the token at range 3, and gain a target lock for the ensuing range 1-2 shot next turn.

It's a terrific upgrade that adds a ton of versatility to the way you spend your focus tokens. It almost gives the Scum Y-Wing the equivelent of a Fire-Control System.

Of all the variants of the Thug Life, I love the simple Y+Autoblaster x5. Right at 100 points, with the potential for 10 un-cancelable hits, it can wreck just about anything out their IF you can get them pinned down. This is a huge problem for the high PS, high Agility, low damage ships that have become common in the 2 ship meta (Han/Dash + Corran, Decimator + Echo/Whisper/Soontir, even Dual IG-2000). Ad in 2-3 BTL Titles for some extra shooting, though you then have to fly in a different way since you only benefit from maximizing R1 AND the fwd firing arc on a not to agile ship. At 40 damage, this can even give your TIE Swarm a moment to pause and consider how he plans to chew through that much.

I also like to run 4Ys, Kavil + 3x Hired Guns with Autoblasters and Unhinged Mech. Leaves just enough to give Kavil an EPT or Modification. Many an opponent have I seen do a double take as the Ys do a K-4, then run right back at you with a 3 speed AND clearing stress. Once or twice and your opponent knows better that to try and get in a jousting match with Ys.

The Ion Y-Wing (usually with the Stress-Bot) works well as a single in Panic Attack and other Action Control/Denial type builds and can fly pretty well with B-Wings, but in most other builds its kind of a odd-ball. Not too good at dog fighting, too slow to support A-Wing and K-Wing builds, and with only 1 Agility can get ripped apart pretty quick by an aggressive player who can focus 3 or 4 ships with 3-4 red dice on each.

The lack of EPT in the Rebel series is also a glaring miss for this ship.

I like to load up my Y-wings with R3-A2 and doubile flechette torpedoes. (but I also have a Ion turret just to keep the control build going.

I have tried Horton with dual proton torpedoes but often I run him with Jan so I can get 5 attack dice from a single proton torpedo. Still horton only allows me to reroll 2 blanks so if I roll 5 blanks I better get more than 1 hit or I'm throwing my dice across the room.

(1) 5x Gold + Autoblaster Turret is an awful list. It relies on positioning to use the turrets, but lacks the dial, the action bar, or the PS to position itself effectively.

(2) Ion Y-wings are brutally effective controllers, and have been since Wave 1. They're cheaper and more flexible than any other Rebel control option, and appear likely to stay that way.

Really?

I liked the sound of 5 ywing with autoblaster turrets.

Slow play from the get go.

Get a feel for what your opponent will do.

And then go for the kill.

Ships always have to fly forward and in a lot or most games there is usually that initial pass. Where things get pretty cluttered.

At 40 hp it's still a lot of hp to go through, even with one agility.

I like the sound of it

You could be right.

I'll give it a wirl one of these days.

5 Y-Wings with Autoblaster Turrets means you have 5 Autoblaster Turrets on the field. Pretty Effective against ships with high agility and little-to-no ability to get out of Range 1.

5 Y-Wings with Autoblaster Turrets and BTL-A4, on the other hand, sacrifices a smidgen of zone-control for adding the primary attacks as well, giving hell to large health easily-blocked ships of all flavors.

So do you see a mix as being better then?

Also throwing out Seismic Charges, because why not ;-)
