First Ever Repaint

By Nightshrike, in X-Wing

Yeah, I stayed up late on the Naboo N-1 and a red imperial guard TIE advanced (that one isn't done yet). Here is the N-1, complete with pink, female-programmed astromech droid R2-KT.

That looks beautiful. And Im gussing those scratches in the metal are some unfortunate printing lines (they are random and out of my control), but they actually look great. Makes it look like stainless steel.

Yep, there are a couple of random printing lines, but nothing that really bugs me. I think it looks good, and frankly the camera catches details that are hard to see with the naked eye. My only complaint is maybe my "chrome" isn't bright enough. I used "steel" but maybe I should have gone with a lighter metallic color. I don't have anything lighter, but was considering buying something. Still, I quite like the way it turned out. On to the Vaksai, the Kimogila, the CloakShape, and the Colonial Viper (which, incidentally, has a scale that fits more with the N-1 than the other Star Wars ships. I think the Star Wars kit bashes are not completely within scale of themselves, as I'd expect the X-wing and the Viper to be closer in size than they are).

Is that why it's facing backwards? ;)

Some cool repaints in this thread!

But I have to echo Kepora's comment...

My only recommendation to you is to try watering down your paints a little more; multiple thin coats are better then one thick coat that'll clog detail. Also, take a little black paint and water it down a lot, adn try to gently paint it into the recessed and where panels meet to help define the different panels. :3

I had no idea how to paint an astromech in a believable way. If she's looking backwards, she's just being a good copilot and checking six.

You will see this technique when I post my royal guard TIE advanced. It worked way better than I expected, considering how soupy the paint looked when I tried it. But I've got some clean-up work to do before I take any pics.

The N-1 coat was intentionally fairly thick because there is no detail to mess up. There are no panel lines to obscure, and there are some printing lines I wanted to obscure, so that's the reason for that.

I was actually looking at the 2 first repaints you posted (the A-Wing and the M3-A Interceptor). It seems quite apparent, even to my inexperienced eye, that the purple was painted on in one thick coat.

I highly recommend you pick up some Tamiya masking tape. It's super cheap and works ridiculously well. I used it on my first repaint, masked off the area I wanted to paint and then painted 3-5 coats of diluted paint (a 1 to 1 ratio of paint and water works well). After the first coat or 2, it looks like it's going to take forever to get any coverage but in the end it's definitely worth it! Plus, once the areas are masked off, painting is super easy, no need to be careful about not painting outside the target area. You could even mask a bunch of different models, and then paint them one after the other. By the time you're done painting the first coat on all your models, the first model is probably dry enough for a second coat!

Granted, masking the areas is meticulous work and can be a little frustrating on the tiny ships, but once it's done painting is a breeze!

That looks great!

Royal Guard TIE Advanced (yes the solar panels are still damp, what can I say, I'm overeager):

These are a must have for tiny stuff like dats... WOW!

I love the work you've put into these. Really cool. I'm looking forward to seeing the X-wing finished, too.

With the Naboo N-1, on the yellow body, I'd suggest a really light wash, like 1 part wash to 5 parts water or something like that, just to give a little more depth to it. Sadly, I'm colour-blind, so I can't recommend a specific wash colour, but a red or reddy-brown would probably work best.

Keep up the good work!

Come, now; let's see more of that Kimogila. You're off to a great start!

I feel a Shapeways order coming up... (yeah, thanks for that - it's expensive enough to keep up with those FFG releases, didn't need this at all!)

Lovely stuff in here, keep 'em coming.

I haven't decided on the paint schemes for the Kimogila or the Vaksai or the CloakShape, and those three models are, frankly, stunning. I can't believe the level of detail, and I really want to do them justice. I will take suggestions, but barring any flashes of inspiration, I think the Colonial Viper Mk II may be next on the list. I'm also going to want another N1 to paint in a more beat-up and battle-damaged fashion. If Mel releases a battle-damaged N1, I'm all over it.

Cracking Job on the re-paints.......and your Naboo fighter looks FANTASTIC ! :D

Great Work.

shame your in the US, otherwise I would have sent you some Chrome paint.

I use it in my Job.....and when i say chrome, I mean chrome !

light coat through an Airbrush and job done,

do you chaps have Alcad paints over there.

that's a great high polished Alloy sheen when sprayed over gloss.......if you ever want those really bright chrome effects.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work,

all the best,

Barry.

Thanks, Barry! I don't have any airbrush stuff, so I don't know if people in the US have alcad or not. I suspect we probably do, but I'm very new to painting things. Yeah, I think I need a brighter chrome for my next N-1. I also want to do a battle-damaged/rusted-out variant, but I don't want to touch the paint on this one, it turned out too pretty. Currently working on the Vaksai, with a fun scheme, though it's not going well. We'll see how it turns out. For whatever reason, my painting skills seem to fall off when I'm not using them to avoid studying.

I'm Board has a painting tutorial today from 12 - 5. Not saying you need it at all. Just thought I'd let you know.

Fun with rust! I'm working on this CloakShape, and decided I just wanted it to look like a junkyard ship. Still more work to do, though I'm not sure what else I'll do with it just yet.

Looking nice so far. I bet you could up the game by doing a nice burnt-amber wash to the whole ship.

:)

Just applied a Vallejo rust wash. I think that was a good call.

I have to say, that you work has certainly improved. If it's meant to be a junkyard ship, maybe paint a few panels a different colour or two, maybe one colour that's faded as it's from another older ship, and the other a new solid colour as it's a newly cut piece of metal. And maybe do some blaster marks that have yet to be repainted.

Yeah, I think that will really sell it.

Thanks guys. Here are your suggestions taken into account. I still think it's missing something, but I like it thus far. And I love that purple from Citadel. Gorgeous. I need to do a purple ship at some point. Maybe for the Kimogila.
