Well FFG could just do "neutral" ships as a new faction with the named ships being one-sided.
X-Wing style possible 3rd faction?
You mean the ones Lord Vader "took care of" almost a decade e ago?
That's propaganda. They're around, somewhere........

Yes! Convoy raids.
Scum is part of the reason I'm easing off of X-Wing in favor of Armada!
I think Episode 7 will happen before FFG is considering the jump to a third faction. By then there may be a canonical third faction to introduce.

This may have occurred to anyone who played Tie Fighter on their old PC. I already thought about this. There's no reason a mixture of the two sides couldn't be used to create planetary, pirate, or splinter group fleets. There is plenty of Star Wars EU material involving Imperials fighting Imperials. Personally I can't wait to pit my Star Destroyers against each other.
Those Dimok Y-wing raiders...I need some payback.
*gets TIE fighter loaded up on the PC...*
More importantly will the new movies introduce new factions? Especially the spin off movies.
That's an interesting idea. Who knows. I certainly wouldn't be against it.

CIS AS THIRD FACTION!
*Runs out of conversation before people start complaining about the prequels*
I've been re-watching The Clone Wars. I can't say that I'm really warming up to the CIS as a faction. I wouldn't be mortally opposed to some Republic ships as surplus ships available to Armada factions.
While I don't embrace an ST:Attack Wing-style free-for-all, I'm sympathetic to the notion that rebels use what they can get their hands on. As such, the Nebulon B (originally an Imperial ship, according to EU sources) should also be available to the Empire.
But, I'm confident that FFG is not going to go that route.
So.... what faction might get those old CIS/Republic vessels?
You're not supposed to warm up to them. They are true freedom fighters, unlike those Rebel terrorists and oppressive Empire/Republic. You're either with us right at the start or against us.
In all seriousness, a CIS hold out is a safe bet and it could be a unique group by having no large base ships (If we drop the Lucrehulk) or by having the faction being focused on very durable but somewhat weak firepower ships (to represent their age).
If their ships get rolled into one of the existing factions, I want it to be Rebel, while the Empire gets Republic ships (I know a few guys whom would go nuts for a Venator).
The problem with a CIS faction with no large ships is that limiting them to small and medium ships pretty much eliminates their entire on screen capital ship inventory. The Munificents would be medium but basically all of the other CIS capital ship from the movies and The Clone Wars would be large.
I don't know if this is crazy talk around these parts - I guess I don't have a feel on the level of prequel vitriol - but I would not be opposed to prequel factions eventually being introduced in both X-wing and Armada. With the way FFG does models, how sharp would a squadron of Naboo starfighters be on the table? People could finally get their ARC-170s as well, and even the various droid starfighters would look great with FFG's magic touch. There are more than enough capital ships if you want to look backwards for additional Armada factions. Fluff doesn't matter at all in tournaments, and I think prequel factions would suit better than Scum ever would. Perhaps it's just coming from the perspective of not hating the prequels, but I'd love to see some Republic / Confederacy fleet actions on my table.
I wouldn't mind them though they would need a lot of EU or FFG created ships for either the Republic or the CIS to have decent fleets

Well, I was thinking that since the Victory is a Medium, the Providence, would also be a medium. The Lucrehulk could also be a large ship. The Munificents could be small (Think Gladiator) and the Recusants could be Medium or small.
The Lucrehulks better be a large, as they are bigger than ISDs.

A Providence is more then twenty percent larger then a Victory. And the Recusants are actually larger then a Providence and only slightly smaller then an MC80.

Actually the providence is smaller then the Vic,
It is about 180 meters LONGER but generally it noticeable smaller
I've never actually seen them nose to nose anywhere to compare average width but in Star Wars it is traditionally the length which determines the size bracket a ship belongs in anyways.
Victory Star Destroyers start narrow at the bow and widen as you move aft. Providence class ships have generally the same width for the length of the craft except for a small section at the bow and a slight widening in the aft area.
