X-Wing style possible 3rd faction?

By darksaber19, in Star Wars: Armada

This might be covered somewhere else already, but it's too much effort to look.

Do we think that, as in X-Wing, FFG will eventually release a 3rd faction for the game to help keep it fresh and interesting? Or do we think the addition of objectives to Armada will do that same job, maybe with occasional new objectives introduced?

And if you do think a 3rd faction is likely, what ships do you want to see?

I could see many more expansions. maybe even a "Faction box" that would include some core Ships and Squadrons. But that is only if they are going to dip into Legacy.

Hapes Consortium is an obvious choice, Hapen Battle Dragon or Nova-Class Battle Cruiser would be ships i would want just for the scale models.

Armada doesn't need one. X-wing was running out of ships. The Rogues pack is a fairly clear indication they're staying bifactional.

Hapes Consortium is an obvious choice

Nova-class, Battle Dragon, then...

You've run out in one wave.

Sure, I can think of at least two more factions: CIS and Republic.

With the new movies, I don't think they'll have to go 3rd faction. Rebels has already introduced a new small Imperial cruiser, its making the Gozanti a staple, and with FFG extending their rights to Ep VII, we'll get all the fun new ships we see there, and might even have rights to the ships they're introducing in the Marvel comics (Leia's shuttle is awesome) as well. Armada is pretty much starting at the perfect time.

Personally, I'd want to see Scum and Villainy introduced to Armada, partly to mirror x-wing but mostly because I love the Keldabe-class battleship and would love to play with that

There are tons of small factions that they could do. Ssi Ruuk, Yevetha, Chiss(probably imperial), Yuuzhan Vong. But like the Hapans, I think they would run out of ships in 1-2 waves.

I remember this sort of debate last summer (pre-Gencon) when a lot of people spoke with great certainty that a 3rd faction wouldn't happen. Let that be a warning to nay-sayers.

That said, I don't believe the case is as compelling in Armada to include a 3rd faction, for three reasons:

  • The non-scum factions are much more obscure and (IMO) just not as cool.
  • Scum just doesn't seem as apropos in the Armada scale - but if Armada takes off the way X-Wing has taken off, I can certainly see this argument being scuttled.
  • There are a lot more ship types for the two factions to draw on, so that they will not be exhausted as quickly.

More importantly will the new movies introduce new factions? Especially the spin off movies.

3 person Armada battles anyone :P

Droids are stupid,

Nuh-uh!

That's an interesting idea. Who knows. I certainly wouldn't be against it.

I've been re-watching The Clone Wars. I can't say that I'm really warming up to the CIS as a faction. I wouldn't be mortally opposed to some Republic ships as surplus ships available to Armada factions.

While I don't embrace an ST:Attack Wing-style free-for-all, I'm sympathetic to the notion that rebels use what they can get their hands on. As such, the Nebulon B (originally an Imperial ship, according to EU sources) should also be available to the Empire.

But, I'm confident that FFG is not going to go that route.

So.... what faction might get those old CIS/Republic vessels?

Ha ha ha, personally I would love to see themed waves with scum and villainy style starters for additional eras. For example have a $60-100 box with a few ships from the CIS vs Republic era, maybe an aces style starter box for Mandalor from the same period, that sort of thing. This would of course be down the road, but I would buy into that sort of setup.

Rebels pick up some old abandoned CIS ships, the Republic ships get assimilated into the early Imperial navy. That one at least would be pretty easy to keep in the two faction system for tournaments.

You're not supposed to warm up to them. They are true freedom fighters, unlike those Rebel terrorists and oppressive Empire/Republic. You're either with us right at the start or against us.

In all seriousness, a CIS hold out is a safe bet and it could be a unique group by having no large base ships (If we drop the Lucrehulk) or by having the faction being focused on very durable but somewhat weak firepower ships (to represent their age).

If their ships get rolled into one of the existing factions, I want it to be Rebel, while the Empire gets Republic ships (I know a few guys whom would go nuts for a Venator).

No need to rise when we're still holding out :D

No, we're still here. Fighting the good fight.

With the local jawas at the scrap yard?

No.......We've got some influence left. We'll get word from Gunray and the other Council leaders soon..........soon.......

You mean the ones Lord Vader "took care of" almost a decade e ago?
