UK based Star Wars Roleplaying podcast for EotE & AoR.

By NewKid, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey everyone,

I love the FFG Star Wars Roleplaying system and am part of a group of 5-6 people that meets weekly to play (alternating EotE and AoR.)

The 2 GMs of our group recently started a podcast called Double Triumph discussing the game and other Star Wars things.

We are in the UK and the podcast is available on iTunes, just search for DOUBLE TRIUMPH.

(If you do not use iTunes it is also available on Podomatic at - http://doubletriumph.podomatic.com/ )

So check it out if you are interested. (be warned, there can be some bad language)

Thanks :)

(also, the GMs can be contacted on twitter @bobshoy and @tissarewolf )

I will evaluate with a critical ear ;)

Having listened to the first two, here are my thoughts:

1) Production. The language doesn't bother me. You warn us above, and it's got an 'E' tag on iTunes. It's my choice therefore to listen. Being from the UK myself I get the vernacular and tone, and can tell when things are said in humour. International (specifically US) listeners may not be so kind. You may want to tone it down ever so slightly. (Especially the "female" stuff. I know you're joking, others won't).

I'm guessing you have a pretty basic setup for audio. Again, fine. Most podcasts start on a shoestring and build up if they can. One thing that would be helpful though is trying to maintain levels. When everyone's talking at once, or there's a sudden outburst, it's hard to listen to, especially on headphones.

And that sign off has GOT to go mate ;) It's awful.

2) Content. When you are talking about the games, there is actually some good stuff. It's obvious you are new to the system, and it's fun reliving some of the discussions our group had in the early days. Much of the other stuff though is pointless. There are a hundred podcasts out there for bashing the prequels, we've heard it all before. Either use that 15 minutes for something else, or cut it. Sometimes (as with Jar-Jar) less is more :) A shorter, tighter show could sound much better, but again that's something that will come in time with experience.

And NO-ONE wants to hear fart discussions. It can be fun in context at the table (we've all had those moments I'm sure) but to listeners it just sounds immature. Sometimes what happens in the game needs to stay in the game ;)

I hope you take this in the spirit it's intended, which is to be constructive. You have a group with good chemistry, and the seeds of some really good content. It just needs some judicious pruning.

Hey MrDodger,
Really appreciate the feedback, all taken in good spirits :)

We will definitely take your comments on board.

As you have heard, it's obvious we're still finding our feet in regards to podcasting.

Seeing as it's my responsibility to edit, maybe I should be willing to cut more, I'm considering re-cutting episode 2 actually...

We are trying to improve the quality of the sound too, and it is getting gradually better as we get more equipment. We even removed the earliest one we did due to how poor the sound quality was.

I'll have a word with the others and hopefully ep 3 will be a big improvement.

Again, thanks for your insights :)

As an American who has watched an unseemly amount of British television over the years, I get almost all the vernacular :) My wife, on the other hand, can't understand the accents and gets confused with British slang and terminology, so for her, British TV shows are met with blank stares and confused looks.

I can't get enough SWRPG podcasts and I tend to listen to them in bed at night. If I fall asleep, I'll re-listen to them later :) So I'm all for what you guys are trying to do.

Do you use production notes, or maybe an outline of what you're planning on talking about? I'm not a communications guy, so I don't know all the technical terms and standard broadcasting techniques, but at least having an outline may help with focus during the show. Better mics would also help ;) and maybe keeping the peanut gallery in check a bit so everyone doesn't talk over each other. Oh, and as Dodger said, you should come up with a different (and quieter) sign off :) It may be dorky, but "May the Force Be With You" is a tried and true classic :D

Anyway, I'll keep listening if you keep recording :) And thanks for helping support the community!

Hi OggDude.

Yes to production notes, that's something we keep meaning to do, but everytime we've recorded so far it's been very impromptu, like a session finishes early so we decide to pod for half hour.

We have good mics, we just need a better recording program and to maybe hook up a mixer. Both GMs are musicians so there are bits and bobs about that need to get set up to improve sound.

Haha, yes I actually agree about the sign off, it's a sort of in-joke, but in-jokes don't really work when others are listening... It'll be changed by ep 3.

Thank you for listening :)

Hi, there's been 2 new episodes since I posted last.

The sound was definitely improved on #4, and we hope it's getting a bit better each time. (sound and content.)

:)
