Edge of the Empire Organized Play (Sunnyvale Area)

By Comic Collector Shop, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey guys, guess you're Interested, so let me break it down.
My name's Mike, gaming manager at Comic Collector Shop. I had a player ask me if FFG did anything like Paizo's Pathfinder Society or the RPGA. I checked, and they do not at this moment. So we're filling the gap until such a time as FFG organizes such an entity.

$5 entry fee, paid to the GM each session.

Sessions are Thursdays at 7pm, starting April 7th.

Your first session is FREE!

GMs are Matt and Emerson. 6 people per table, only 1 table guarenteed per night at this point.

WE DO NOT PROFIT FROM ENTRY FEES. YOU ARE PAYING THE GMS FOR THEIR MATERIALS AND TIME.

Dice, characters, and source books as well as other accessories will be avalible at the shop if you enjoy your session.

Great for new players and vets alike!

Sessions will last about 4 hours each. All adventures will be based on the prewritten adventures released by FFG.

Any other questions?

Hope to see you soon!

Good for you. I started my own organized play games in Anoka. Great time. Only struggle is getting GMs. The fact that you are paying them will probably make te difference. Wish I was in CA.

Good Luck!

Thanks. Any Advice you might have would be nice.
We settled on having the GMs be compensated by the player's because many of our GMs didn't have any of the premade adventures, or had sunk money and time into their accessories (one guy uses all legos.) So it seemed a no brainer.

Sounds cool! Wish I lived in Cali for this; the 5 dollar entry fee is a little odd. The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game organized play has no fee. They bring their own materials such as the core. As players we usually have to buy the class decks-- 20 dollars a pop and that's about it.

Maybe suggest a reason besides we are paying the GM money because it's a 'job' and we are using his stuff? I mean the players could argue that they have their own stuff. I'd suggest some neat things...something the money could go for besides paying a salary to a GM. Maybe just bring money for pitching in for food or something cool that maybe the shop could provide special just for the gamers in the play-- special mats, special cards, special models.

But that's my opinion.

Well, the shop does have to turn a profit to pay for the lights and rent and electricity and stuff. (I know they're giving it all to the GMs at this point, but eventually logistics will trump good will)

$5/session is rather reasonable as long as the place is nice.

If it's use of the facility than I can see that as a rental fee than. But there still should be incentive to play there and not just gather a group and go to someone's house.

Another store I used to game in has a $5 fee which is returned as a voucher that you use at the store. The vouchers just accumulated until you had enough to buy something cool :) They also had snacks and drinks that you could buy for $1 each during your game.

I may check this out. It's about a 45-50 minute drive for me.

small world where abouts CA do you live?

its a 1.5 hour drive for me since i live in stockton. Ive never been against being a gm for a group just finding people who want to play FFG star wars has been a challenge. If there were people in Stockton/lodi/lathrop area wanting to play I would be interested.

My store has a $5 fee as well, though it is to cover the space "rental". They have several rooms that can accommodate upwards of 8 people each. They are also very busy, especially on Saturday. Space can be reserved and they charge $5 per person, minimum $20. So while we are there consistently every other week, anyone can reserve a room for any (gaming) reason. And I'm pretty sure those rooms would be used if we were not there.

They also routinely waive the fee if you are buying things related to the game you are playing. Well, I should say they have for me each week I bought a FFG SW book. Its been so long since I have gone for anything else there that didn't have a normal buy-in (sealed booster games).

Were I closer than 2,100 miles to Sunnyvale, CA, the fee wouldn't bother me. As is, I'll stick to the wonderful, aforementioned, store that is a more reasonable (though still a drive) ~40 miles away.

I'm on the other side of the Altamont Pass from you in San Ramon, about 5 miles north of the 580/680 interchange. It takes me a little over an hour to get to Stockton.

Well, at my FLGS, there is no fee. :P

How close are you to Austin, TX? ;)

Austin? That does cut around 1,000 miles off the trip. Let me sleep on it. :D

As soon as I get my Thursday nights free again, I'll come by and check it out (I had no idea this shop even existed, and I live essentially "down the street").

You're actually not paying the store at all. The money goes directly to the GM, for his (or her if we get a female GM) time. No players = no money for the GM. Also the GM purchased the adventure, as they do in the Pathfinder Society. While I'd imagine Matt may make an exception for someone who brings their own FFG produced adventure to run, I cannot speak for him.

Pathfinder Society gives the option to charge players to the host of the event.

Please do. You can also check us out on Facebook for our full list of event. Next month's schedule goes up in the next few days. https://www.facebook.com/ComicCollectorShop

Bump.

We will be adding Warhorn as a way to preregister for the event. If you haven't checked it out yet, do so. It's a great system. Link will follow.

We had 6 people this past week, and a special note from our GM.
"Tell them they get a session free if they spend money here, stupid."
Hurtful words aside, we've had two new players take matt up on that offer. One purchased the Assasin Spec. Deck, and the other got his copy of the core rules. And remember that your first session is always free.
If anyone would like to set up their own organized play group that would have transferable characters with ours, shoot me a message or give me a call at 1-408-732-8775.
