Yep, I do that. It helps that I always forget what movement I selected the moment I look at the next dial anyway, so knowing what the other side is doing isn't much of a problem for me! ![]()
Do you play with yourself?
I can't think of anything clever that a) hasn't been said already and b) isn't against forum policy....
As much as I intended this double entendre to get people's attention and provide a few laughs, I genuinely am interested in how people go about solo play. All snickers aside.
I actually didn't know about those apps and found them helpful, if not a little bit limited. Right now I think the value of dialing in maneuvers for both sides is really just more about making myself think about how each side would fly in a given situation, and it provides some practice flying in formation, around asteroids, and getting the sequence of events down for collisions and such. I really want to get better at this game, but when I can only play, at most, 1x week, I have to explore other options for practice.
Hence, playing with against myself.
I do play against myself when doing tourney prep. Trying out specific scenarios or trying my list against certain lists im likely to face in an upcomming tournament. Helps to be ready for all possible situations.
Playing against yourself you can always insure the worst possible outcomes because you know what the other guy is going to do. So it lets you get lots of practice for bad situations.
I guess the real question is....do you sit on your hand before you move your ships?
The Stranger ! LMFAO !!!
It's a great way to try out new things before playing them in public.
(That didn't come out right, did it?)
Here's a useful tool to assist in solo gaming: a minis AI.

There's actually been a few updates to that AI; in particular, it now has all ships up to and including wave 4, and has better options if the ship it is controlling is stressed: http://xwing.runbam.com.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/xwing_ai_1.7.0b2/index.htm
It's funny that we all have different versions of the AI. This one has wave 5 at least:
Phrasing!... dammit.
Do I ever play against myself? Sure, I'll often do quick solitaire games on Vassal or on X-Wing Workbench if I'm at work to test out opening maneuvers and just see how two lists will fight against each other.
Usually I will pick the side I want to be playing as, I will pick all of their maneuvers first and lock them in, and then as the "enemy side" I will pick the maneuver that I would most likely have picked without knowing what the other side was doing, and if it would be a toss up between 2 different maneuvers I might flip a coin.
I never use the browser based AI systems anymore, they're just not a challenge and will give you a false sense of how a match will play out because of all the random moves that will be suggested.
Edited by TvboySince this has been resurrected, I will say that I did play my first game against myself the other day. I was surprised that I had any fun at all, but I found that by the time I'd planned one side, I had pretty much forgotten what I put on the dials when I went to planning the other side, so I basically ended up having a reasonably fair game. I don't know what this says about my short term memory, but it was nice...

Ok, I had a joke about my GR-75, Epic play and......nevermind.
I downloaded Vassal on my work computer. I fly against myself frequently, and I find my game has improved a lot.
I start with an overall strategy for each side. joust, flank, pincer, whatever, and I usually identifiy a priority target.
Then I alternate which side I set dials for first. turn 1, I may set all the rebel dials first. turn 2, all the imperials. I try to make the move that makes the most sense for each given pilot or that best fits the overall plan, to avoid as much inside knowledge as possible.
As I said, this has improved my game a lot.
I don't always play with myself, but when I do, I like to reach for my GR-75..........if you are gonna do it, make it epic!

Night, I found the same thing for myself. By the time I had all the maneuver dials set, I had forgotten pretty much what I had placed. So it all worked out pretty good.
i gotta try this Vassal thing, but when I attempted to install it before, i couldn't get it to work.

Never partaken actually.
